International Journal of Engineering Research & Technology (IJERT)ISSN: 2278-0181Vol. 3 Issue 8, August - 2014Information Resources about ElectronicComponentsSameer KadamI/c Librarian,MCT‟s Rajiv Gandhi Institute of TechnologyMumbai, IndiaAbstract — The components groups are classified under active, passive, mechanical and nomenclature relates its variouscomponents with the categories. In research nine of threeresources are frequently use by respondent and aware of availableresources of new technical information. Commercial informationresources are mostly used for electronic components with the helpof market dealer and commercial catalogues. The data books areuseful for information resources to acquire knowledge ofcomponents. An information resource is available throughinternet. Information resources are useful for engineering studentfor using electronic components.I.INTRODUCTIONThe need for information is increasing day by day.Different types of readers approach the library for differenttypes of information. Information is viewed differently bydifferent users. For some it is knowledge, for others it is acommodity and power and for many it is just a document.Any transfer of knowledge is considered equivalent totransfer of information and vice-versa.Information must be at the service of the wholecommunity. In a library various types of reading materials areacquired, so that the libraries may serve as source ofinformation with the acquired materials. The library canassist users to trace documents and information that existbeyond its wall.Information generates new information, that is theexisting knowledge or information is generating newinformation, new knowledge and new data.Decision and policy makers need information fortaking right decision. Some users approach the staff of the library straightwith the queries and get the required items of information. There are some other users who do not state exactly theirspecific information requirement. In some cases the user maynot find relevant information in a particular document but thesame information may be available elsewhere. This is theinformation scenario, in general in library.Just as information, electronics also has universalpresence. Today everything from a toy to tractor, health careto home entertainment and every walk of life are madepossible because of electronics.Electronics devices are made up of differentcomponents with variety specifications. It is curious to know,IJERTV3IS080614A. Literature reviewThis study, as indicated is about information sourcesabout electronic components. To understand backgroundabout electronic components and related informationresources a formal literature review was carried out.The entire literature about electronic componentscan be categorized into three groups.a)General hobbyist books and textbooks.b)Highly technical books and journal articlesabout semiconductors and components.c)Trade literature.IJERTKeywords— Information Resources, Electronic Components,IREC, ECRhow an electronic engineers or even a hobbyist chooses thecomponents with required parameters. What are theinformation sources he or she consults? What is informationseeking behavior of an electronic designer? This study tries tofocus on this subject.B. ObjectivesThe literature review indicates that there is no studydone about information sources about the electroniccomponents and their utility from Librarian‟s point of view. Therefore, the following objectives are considered.1.To understand the nomenclature related toElectronic Components in order to know the user‟sinformation need.2.To identify various sources that providesinformation about the electronic components3.To find different sources that give technicalinformation about components on the net.4.To know different commercial information sourcesabout the electronic components.5.To know the arrangement of information withinsources identified above.C. MethodologyTo meet the above stated objectives individuals wereconsulted. These individuals included teachers and studentsof electronics and telecommunications engineering. Theserespondents‟ persons were selected randomly. Aquestionnaire to find information resources preferred andother related data was designed. The questionnaire wasconstructed based on the set objectives. The questionnairewas given to the respondents and these responses werecollected after ten days. The questions that required rankedresponses were analyses by multiplying with proportionatewww.ijert.org(This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.)1431

INFORMATION OF ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS :2) Active ComponentsThose components which are provide amplificationor switching are called Active Components. e.g. Diodes,Transistors and Integrated circuits.3) Mechanical componentsThose are printed circuits boards, chassis, wires, plugs and sockets.a) Information of Passive componentsA passive component, depending on field, mayeither refer to a component that consumes (but does notproduce) electrical energy, or to a component that isincapable of power gain. A component that is not passive iscalled an active component. A circuit consisting entirely ofpassive components is also considered passive and has thesame properties as a passive component. In control systemsand circuit network theory, a passive component is one thatconsumes energy, but does not produce energy. Under thismethodology, voltage and current sources are consideredactive, while transistors, resistors, diodes, capacitors, andother dissipative and energy-neutral components areconsidered passive i.e. the components which do not inthemselves provide gain are called passive components.(Different Electronic Components)ResistorsIJERTDesign of an electronic device and its performancedepends upon the choice of most effective and low-costcomponents. Selection of suitable components for a particularapplication depends on price, availability and standardization,in addition to technical requirement. Only a few componentsare expected to be special purpose components. The othercomponents are of common type and are for generalapplications. Electronic circuits consist of the following threetypes of components.CapacitorsInductor (Coils)Chart of Passive and Active ircuits1) Passive Components. Those components which do not in themselvesprovide gain are called Passive Components. e.g. Resistors,Capacitors and Inductors.IJERTV3IS080614b) Information of Active componentsIn electronics, active components are componentsthat can be used to provide power gain in an electroniccircuit. This means that the power of their output signal maybe more than that of their input signal. This added power isprovided by another power source. The most common activecomponents are transistors. One of the basic uses oftransistors is in making amplifiers. In a simple transistoramplifier, there's an AC input signal (a current, a voltage orboth i.e. a power) that needs to be amplified. Those whichprovide amplification or switching are called activecomponents.Semiconductor is conventionally defined as amaterial whose resistivity falls intermediate between those ofmetals and dielectrics insulators. Semiconductors haveconductivity between conductors and insulators.www.ijert.org(This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.)1432

International Journal of Engineering Research & Technology (IJERT)ISSN: 2278-0181Vol. 3 Issue 8, August - 2014DiodeRESOURCES OF INFORMATION TO FIND SUITABLE CIRCUITS:TransistorsIntegrated Circuits(IC)Printed Circuit Board (PCBIJERTc) Information of Mechanical Components:Mechanical components are a component which ismechanically developed. In these components required smallcomponents for passing current and signals. Circuits areprepared with the different small components. Mechanicalcomponents are differing than active and passivecomponents. Mechanical components are not developedwithout active and passive components i.e. these componentsare interrelated with each other. In order to understand what resources were beingrefered by the respondents, they were asked “When you aredesigning a device, how do you find a suitable circuit orcircuits?” The data gathered is presented in table and it isrationalized multiplying by corresponding weightages. Theresult is given in table it follows that, preference is given tobooks. Books are more suitable resources to find out thecircuit. Then Application Handbooks are suitable resources tofind circuits. Then give the important to encyclopedia, websites by discussion with experts, market dealers etc.Journal, magazines, project reports are suitableresources to find out the circuits.Practical work carried out in the lab because to findout the functions of electronic components.Application handbooks, encyclopedia, web sites arenearly same resources for designing the devices.Expert discussion, dealers is less important to compare withthe books and application Handbooks resources.WiresRESOURCES FOR COMPONENTS SPECIFICATION:ChassisIII.INFORMATION ANALYSIS:Questionnaire and observation is analysed and presented hereto understand the information scenario with respect toelectronic componentsGoing deeper, it is necessary to know whatspecialized sources are consulted, hence they were asked“What resources do you use to find the specification of thecomponents in the circuits?”IJERTV3IS080614www.ijert.org(This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.)1433

International Journal of Engineering Research & Technology (IJERT)ISSN: 2278-0181Vol. 3 Issue 8, August - 2014COMPONENT SPECIFICATION :In research, ten resources were listed to find thespecification of the components in the circuits.Data books are most demanded resources to find thespecification of the components, and then ApplicationHandbooks has given the importance. IC master, commercialcatalogues; journals are giving the rank to one by one.Encyclopedia and web sites are given the differentimportance. The resources are different with each other i.e.hard copy and soft copy. Discussion with expert and marketdealers‟ resources is less important with respect to IC master, commercial catalogue resources. In other resourcesimportance is given to the project report and technical paper.FREQUENTLY USED RESOURCES:IJERTIt is necessary to know the responses used by therespondents to identify the components with the requiredspecification. To find it, they were asked “What resources doyou use to finalize the specification of the components?”In this research teachers and students give theimportance to data books. Data book are use to finalise thespecification of the components. Secondly applicationhandbooks are used, then IC master and commercialcatalogue, journal, encyclopedia, web sites, expert discussion, markets dealer etc.In respect of Data book is compare with moreimportant than application handbooks, IC master, commercialcatalogues. It is necessary at this stage to know what specificsources among the respondents preferred type is mostfrequently used. Therefore they were asked “Name fiveresources of the above type which you use frequently?”In the study, data books are first resources which areused frequently. A second is application handbook.IC master is third resources for designing thedevices. Journal is fourth resources and encyclopedia is fifthwhich are used.In this research, IC masters and journal are givennearly more importance than commercial catalogues, discussion with experts and websites. Some expertsrecommended for using books and manuals as a resources. Inthe research, data books resources are frequently used inrespect of application handbooks, IC master, journals, encyclopedia. In the study, all the profession give informationabout information resources which is used by frequently, Thefive resources are data book, application handbooks, ICmaster, journals, and encyclopedia.IJERTV3IS080614PURCHASE OF COMPONENT :IC is identified by marking the device type numberon the face of the IC. This number is usually accompanied bythe date code, indicating the year and week the device wasmanufactures.www.ijert.org(This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.)1434

International Journal of Engineering Research & Technology (IJERT)ISSN: 2278-0181Vol. 3 Issue 8, August - 2014Device TypeFirst know about specification. So we can keep themin mind and demand to shopkeeper.Application in mind then find specification for knowthe manufacturer name. An application is more importantbecause making circuit that has market value andspecification range of operating cost.Specifications satisfy need of user and demandcircuit to manufacturer. Complete specification of electroniccircuit to develop and for approaching discuss with expertsmanufacturers clearly about component for necessary todevelop the circuit.Specification in mind gets it desired requirement. Inapplication in mind, is easy to approach. In manufacturer inmind, get it desired quality. Ask the shopkeeper for helpingthe choice of components.Specification and manufacturer mind gave the betteridea for selecting components. Application and shopkeeperhelp to select good quality components.µA741FFairchild8016YearWeek of the yearSEARCH STRATEGY(Device Identification)SEARCH FOR CIRCUITSIJERTUltimately, a component is to be obtained orpurchased from an electronic shop. How do subject expertsapproach the market? In view of this they were asked, “Howdo you approach an electronic shop?”Here different types of approaches an electronicshop. For the requirement of electronic part, we are approachto electronic shop. Different types approaching, application inmind, manufactures in your mind, specification in your mindand ask the shopkeepers. In response to a question, “Explain how do yousearch circuits components related information?”Respondents prefer Google as the specific searchengine to search circuit components. The other responsesindicated Wikipedia, IEEE websites, IT Texas instrumentetc., which are specific resources and not search engines.RATIONAL FOR APPROACHTo understand the logic behind the choice ofapproach indicated above, they were asked “Why do youprefer the above methods?”In the study different types of methods with amanufacture in your mind may easy to collect information, with the specification components devices can be approachthe shopkeeper is helpful because he gives the requiredinformation.Keeping an application in mind of decision a circuitwe need to keep specification in mind, and then ask toshopkeeper for other components with same specification.Applicants know about circuit or device. If youdecide the application then has to fixed manufacturer anddemand to manufacturer for specification requirement.Easy to identify specification and think aboutmanufacturer and shopkeeper. Manufacturer is important; itshould be from well developed industry and to check that youfind need of that project.IJERTV3IS080614In order to understand the search strategy adopted bythe respondents, they were asked, “What do you ask in searchbox?”In this research, components number is the first rankfor ask in search book, next is manufacture‟s name,Application function and combination. In combination it means „component No‟,„manufacture name‟ both are combined. If gave thecombination in search box, information display withcombination e.g. National Semiconductor LM741MotorolaMC1741RCACA3741Texas instrumentsSN52741SigneticsN5741„Circuit name‟ is also important point, to ask for in searchbox. If circuit name is perfectly known then yon can receiveinformation about components, manufacturer‟s name andfunction.www.ijert.org(This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.)1435

International Journal of Engineering Research & Technology (IJERT)ISSN: 2278-0181Vol. 3 Issue 8, August - 2014INTERNET FOR CIRCUITS:e.g.IV.CONCLUSIONV.1.The engineering college library should makesspecial efforts to instruct the users about sources forelectronic components.2.There should be more awareness web baseinformation resources, their evaluation and the searchstrategies.Electronics being the heart of the entiremanufacturing and service industry can function faster andmore efficiently, if awareness about web-based informationresources is spread. This study is an attempt to assessinformation awareness experts in electronics. However, it isonly the first step for looking to information proliferationrelated to electronic components; it appears we have miles togo.BibliographyREFERENCE BOOKS:1.
