GLOBAL2020UPDATE

FINISHING THE TASK:BIBLES, BELIEVERS ANDBODIES OF CHRIST FOREVERYONE, EVERYWHERE“Go and make disciples of all nations.”These were some of Jesus’ last words on earth. We know thisGreat Commission is a call given to every follower of Jesus, not just for a chosen few. It’s a call for all believers, in every church and every country, for all generations.Jesus’ command to reach the lost is as urgent today as it was for the first centuryChristians. Today, we’re living in exciting times with unprecedented opportunities. For the first time in history, because of modern developments, it is now possibleto see every nation, tribe, people, and language reached with the good news of Jesus. However, there are challenges and barriers we can only overcome by workingtogether with a spirit of self-sacrifice.Even today, 2000 years after the resurrection, there are still hundreds of people groupswith No Believers, thousands of languages with No Bible in their language, andmillions of places with No Body of Christ. This means that billions of people will go intoeternity separated from Jesus forever—unless the global church rises up to take a firmhold of the mandate we were given 2,000 years ago.We are living in a time in which communication, translation, and transportation can reachthe most isolated and overlooked people on the earth-people who have never heard theGood News of Christ. Now is the moment to come together, collaborating and innovatingfor such a time as this. To this end, the Bible, Believer and Bodies of Christ initiatives arecollaborative arms of the same mission, working hand-in-hand with local leaders andtheir communities to catalyze transformation through the Gospel message.FINISHING THE TASK UNTIL CHRIST’S RETURN:TOWARDS THE COMPLETION OF THE GREAT COMMISSIONFinishing The Task unites and mobilizes the global bodyof Christ to courageously take up the mantle of catalyzing, multiplying and supporting church planting movementsin every unreached people group and place, untileveryone, everywhere has access to a Bible, believersand a Body of Christ.FINISH THE TASK2

THE PRIORITY OF PRAYER IN FINISHINGTHE TASK“Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.”1 Chronicles 16:11Prayer is the foundation of all that we do as we seek God’s wisdom in order to carryout His plans. Finishing The Task is committed to fostering unity in prayer, focusingspecifically on Christian organizations partnering with the Church in obedience to theGreat Commandment and towards the completion of the Great Commission. To thisend, FTT will be establishing a prayer initiative that unites our partners in prayer forthe Great Commission.FINISH THE TASK3

BIBLE: COMPREHENSIVE BIBLE TRANSLATIONIN THE LANGUAGES OF UNENGAGED,UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPSWorldwide, less than 2% of all Deaf know Jesus, makingthem the largest unreached people group in the world. In order to make the Bible accessible to every person on earth, Finishing The Taskis committed to speeding up the work of Bible translation. While this has traditionallymeant the work of translating the full Bible into the written languages of the Unengaged,Unreached People Groups (UUPGs), this work now also includes making the entire Bibleaccessible to oral communicators and to the community of the Deaf People Groups—those who access the Bible in their “heart language” of signing.Worldwide, less than 2% of all Deaf peoplesknow Jesus, making the Deaf communitythe largest unreached people group in theworld. In December 2019, the FTT DeafCoalition was established to raise awarenessabout the Deaf community and their uniqueBible needs. With the establishment of theDeaf Coalition in addition to FTT’s continuedfocus on the broader oral culture groups,FTT is committed to developing a focusedstrategy to make the full Bible available tothese people groups as part of the goal toprovide a Bible for everyone, everywhere.FINISH THE TASK4

BELIEVERS AND BODY OF CHRIST:PARTNERING WITH CHURCH PLANTINGMOVEMENTSFinishing The Task has been in collaborative conversation with Church PlantingMovement leaders to envision together the next strategic finishing line of the GreatCommission. A Church Planting Movement (CPM) is defined as the multiplication ofdisciples making disciples and leaders developing leaders, which results in indigenouschurches planting churches. These churches then spread quickly through a peoplegroup or population segment and the new disciples and churches begin to transformtheir communities as the new body of Christ lives out Kingdom values. When churchesreproduce consistently to four generations in multiple streams, this is defined as asustaining movement.WHAT GOD IS DOING THROUGH HIS BODY AROUND THE WORLD*These movements exist across every continent and worldview, in both rural and urban areas. 4,589 reports of active teams trained in CPM and seeking to start movementswhich includes: 1,606 CPM efforts awaiting fruit 1,322 efforts of which many are yielding 2nd and 3rd generation churches 1,376 Church PlantingMovements 76.9 MILLION believersin all CPM engagements 4.8 MILLION known churchesin all CPM engagements 56K believers per CPM(average) 16 average believers perchurch, per CPM (average)While not part of the formal definition of “movement,” most of these church planting movements have at least 100churches with 1500 baptized disciples within 4–5 years of the initial church plant.FINISH THE TASK5

LOOKING FORWARD—FTT STRATEGY1. Speed up the task of Bible Translation;2. Use every available channel and means to spread the Gospel;3. Plant all kinds of churches to reach all kinds of people;4. Mobilize all kinds of people to plant all kinds of churches;5. Unite around the Great Commandment and the Great Commission;6. Empower every believer to be an ambassador for Christ;7. Organize and mobilize people to pray for the Great Commission.AS THE WORLD GETS DARKER, THE CHURCH SHINES BRIGHTERThe work of reaching the unreached has notstopped in the midst of the challenges brought byCOVID-19. In fact, in some areas, it has presentedan opportunity to reach out and meet felt needsin a way that opens the door to the Gospel. For example, Kumar, working with e3 Partners, reports remarkable outreach during the COVID-19lockdown in India. He and his team have fed over74,000 men, women and children in 3200 villagesand 5 large cities. They have seen 18,790 peopleprofess faith in Christ and have started severalnew house churches during the pandemic. In addition, after searching for two years fora Mathukaran UUPG (the cow people), they foundthem during their feeding campaign. They fedand shared the gospel with approximately 250Mathukaran people and 64 responded positivelyto the Gospel. We are praising God as theseare the first ever known believers among theMathukaran people!FINISH THE TASK7

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESHERO OF THE FAITHThe joyful 80-year-old pictured belowis Dr. Khamphone Khuntapanya, theleader of the Lao Evangelical Church—anamazing hero of our Faith. In the 1980s,Dr. K was imprisoned by the Communistgovernment of Laos for 7 hard years—sentenced to “reeducation” because ofhis Christian faith. When he was released, the LEC had dwindled to just 10,000members with churches in only 7 of Laos’17 provinces. It was a bleak time, butDr. K persevered, trusting God for greatthings in his country.Today, the LEC has more than 200,000members and churches in everyprovince. What’s more, the denominationis at the center of the effort to takethe gospel to the over 100 “unengaged”people groups of Laos—the isolatedminority groups who have never onceheard the Good News of Jesus Christ.Under Dr. K’s leadership, hundredsof Lao believers are being trained inevangelism and church planting throughpartnerships with Team Expansion,e3 Partners and the Finishing Fund. They are beginning to reach out to thosein their country to whom no one has evergone. As a result, in just the last yearover 50 unengaged groups have nowbeen exposed to the gospel, and thereare now believers and house churchesin most of them. God’s Spirit is on themove in Laos!—STORY SHARED WITH FTT BYTEAM EXPANSION, E3 PARTNERS,AND FINISHING FUNDToday, the LEC has more than 200,000members and churches in every province.FINISH THE TASK10

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESHOW GOD IS MOVING TOWARD NO PLACE LEFT IN HAITIBY JEPHTE MARCELINI am one of the servants in No Place LeftHaiti. Our vision to faithfully obey Jesusby making disciples who make disciples, planting churches that plant churches, and mobilizing missionaries to the nationsuntil there’s no place left. We do thisby entering empty fields, sharing thegospel with anyone who will listen, discipling those who respond, formingthem into new churches and raisingup leaders from within them to repeatthe process. This is happening in everydifferent location in Haiti. As thesechurches gather in homes, under trees, and everywhere, we are seeing newleaders and teams being raised up fromthe harvest.A great example of this is Joshua Jorge, one of our team leaders. He is laboringfor no place left in Ganthier, an arealocated in Southeast Haiti. Recently, hesent out two of his Timothies, Wiskensleyand Renaldo, to an area called Anse-àPitres. Following the example of Luke10, they went with no extra provisionsand searched for a house of peace. Theyarrived and immediately began sharingthe gospel house-to-house, asking theLord to lead them to God-preparedFINISH THE TASK11

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESpeople. After a few hours, they met aman in the street named Calixte. As theyshared with him about the hope foundonly in Jesus, he received the gospel andgave his life to Jesus.Wiskensley and Renaldo asked Calixtewhere he lived and he led them to hishome. They entered the house, sharedJesus with his entire family and they allchose to follow Jesus that day. Thesetwo ambassadors spent the next fourdays with this family, training them andtaking them out into the harvest to sharewith their neighbors. During those fourdays, 73 people turned and believed inJesus, 50 of them were baptized and theyformed a new church in Calixte’s home.Wiskensley and Renaldo continued toreturn to train a few emerging leadersin simple, biblical, reproducible tools.Within just a few weeks, this new churchhad already multiplied into two otherchurches! Praise Jesus! My people have been physically andspiritually oppressed for generations.Haiti tells people, “You cannot followJesus until your life is clean.” They say,“Do not read the Bible because you willnot understand it.” Jesus says, “Comefollow me and I will make you fishersof men.” Now we are listening to Jesus.Haitians are finding freedom in theGospel of Grace. As we follow Jesus’Kingdom strategy given to us in theGospels and in the book of Acts, beingfaithful to obey all of His commands, the Lord of the harvest is doing agreat work. We are truly experiencinga movement of the Spirit of God.Thousands of Haitians are acceptingtheir identity as ambassadors for Christand thousands of new Jesus gatheringsare being formed. We are not seeking tobuild our own kingdom, but giving awayGod’s Kingdom. And He is multiplying it!We began implementing movementprinciples in February 2016. Weare now tracking seven streams of4th generation churches (and more)representing more than 3,000 newchurches and 20,000 baptisms.—STORY SHARED WITH FTT BY 24:14My people have been physically and spiritually oppressedfor generations. Haiti tells people, “You cannot followJesus until your life is clean.” They say, “Do not readthe Bible because you will not understand it.” Jesus says,“Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”Now we are listening to Jesus.FINISH THE TASK12

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESMOVEMENTS START MOVEMENTS IN SOUTHAND SOUTHEAST ASIABY KUMARIn 1995 I started sharing the gospelamong unreached people and plantingchurches. My goal was to plant 100churches by 2020. By 2007 I had planted11 churches. Some people would considerthat success, but I was devastatedbecause I realized that at that rate, therewas no way I would reach 100 churchesby 2020. For two months I cried out tothe Lord: “Show me the way to plant 100churches!” Then in mid-2007 I got invitedto a training in “4 Fields Zero BudgetChurch Planting.” I was only able to attendfor one session, but that hour changedmy life and ministry. I saw that Jesusequipped his disciples to multiply in away that required zero outside funding.Less than a year later, when I calledthem all together and did the mappingof the fruit, we had 100 churches!Using the 4 Fields (CPM model)approach, we had reached the goalof 100 churches 12 years ahead time!I asked the Lord “Where should Igo now?” He said “Don’t go anywhere.Coach churches. Train the 100 churchesto plant three more churches each.”As I trained my local church leaders, they trained their people. Some churchesplanted five new churches. Othersplanted none. By the next year theI realized I had been plantingtraditional churches in which newbelievers were passively dependenton me. I saw that I needed instead todisciple new believers to share thegospel, make disciples and form newchurches. I started planting “0 budget”churches, which began reproducing. At first, only fourteen people—unschooledoral learners—came to faith. I trainedthose fourteen in my house over thecourse of one month. Since they allhad regular jobs, different people wouldcome on different days. It was reallychallenging, but the Lord told me notto give up. After they were trained, theywent off to plant churches.FINISH THE TASK13

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESnetwork of 100 churches had grownto 422. We trained those churches toplant three more churches each. By thefollowing year we had 1268 churches. Then the Lord told me: “Cast vision toother churches.” So I began to do thisin other parts of the country. I toldpeople “Come and see what the Lordis doing; see how our believers liveand serve.” As people came and weretrained, they multiplied to the thirdand fourth generation. I asked for 5000and the Lord gave 5000. When I askedfor 50,000, the Lord gave 50,000.This movement is starting other newmovements in three primary ways:Believers with a vision for reaching theirown people come to observe our workand receive ten days of training. Thenthey go back to start a movement. We personally go to their countriessince some cannot afford to cometo our location. First we do an initialtraining, then I invite some of them to asecond training where I do 50% of thetraining and they do 50%. Then for thethird training, I coach them to do all thetraining. I then follow up with ongoingcoaching of those who have implementedthe training principles. Every threemonths, we try to call them and see howit’s going. Then we go back to follow up.We keep doing follow-up in differentcountries on a quarterly rotation. Finally, we cast vision to coalitionsof partners for “no place left” in theirregions. For follow-up training, we sendmaster trainers (people who understandthe whole model and can train othersto start movements) to equip them.We have now engaged 56 previouslyUnengaged UPGs. We have ministryin almost every state of our country, and the work has spread to 12 countriesin South Asia and Southeast Asia. Wehave developed 150 master trainers inour country. I’m very encouraged by 24:14,to learn that I’m not alone; I’m on theright track. Others in 24:14 are also seeinggreat fruit and have a similar vision. Our network’s goal fits with that of the2414 Coalition: We want to see no placeleft without a gospel witness by 2025.—STORY SHARED WITH FTT BY 24:14FINISH THE TASK14

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESHOW GOD IS MOVING AMONG THE UNREACHED IN EAST AFRICABY AILA TASSEThrough Church Planting Movements(Disciple-Making Movements) amazingthings have occurred among unreachedpeople groups in East Africa. Since 2005,we have seen 7,571 churches plantedwith 185,358 new disciples. Multiplestreams have started, multiplyinginto additional CPMs. In Rwanda, themovement is at 14 generations of newchurches. Kenya’s at 9 generations.God is impacting 11 countries includingTanzania, Burundi, Uganda and evenSudan despite the war.I grew up in Northern Kenya on the edgeof the desert. One day as I was praying,God gave me a vision. He showed me14 of the 22 unreached people groupsin Kenya, every one of them living inthat desert.I felt God was calling me but didn’t wantto accept the call. I had gone throughso much persecution from my familyand community that I wanted to leavethe area. At that time there were noChristians among the indigenous people. The churches there all consisted ofpeople working for the governmentor NGOs.In 1998, I began fulfilling God’s visionand over the next few years I startedimplementing CPM principles. I becameserious about applying a simplerFINISH THE TASK15

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESspeaking to them. This strategy doesn’tforce them to convert but rather focuseson the Scriptures and what the Holy Spiritspeaks to the person through them. TheDBS leader helps them hear from God,he moves in powerful ways in them.At this point we have engaged allof the 14 UPGs in the desert andgone beyond that. Now we’re talkingabout 300 unreached people groupsas per Joshua Project. We’re workingat it country by country in East Africa, praying and focusing on the leastreached, the least engaged.pattern of church which was much morereproducible. Two other key factors thathelped me multiply churches were theideas of helping people discover truth(instead of someone telling it to them)and obedience as a normal patternof discipleship. The strategy of DMMfocuses on Discovery Bible Studies (DBS),where lost people are introduced tothe Scripture and discover the truth forthemselves and obey whatever God isJesus commanded us to make disciples(not converts) as we go, until no spaceremains untouched by a worldwideexplosion of disciples. This won’t happenby planting and growing churches oneat a time. It won’t happen by trying tobuild megachurches or by paying a fewpeople to try to do it. We believe the onlyway for the Church to fulfill the GreatCommission is through making discipleswho can make disciples. We have seenGod do in East Africa, sometimes inpartnership with existing churches.—STORY SHARED WITH FTT BY 24:14I grew up in Northern Kenya on the edge of the desert. One day as I was praying, God gave me a vision. He showed me 14 of the 22 unreached people groupsin Kenya, every one of them living in that desert.FINISH THE TASK16

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESDMM SKEPTIC STARTS A STRONG MOVEMENT OF DISCIPLE MAKINGAgali gave Disciple Making Movementstraining to a group of pastors in 2015.From those who took the DMM training,a pastor named Roba came to him andexpressed serious doubts that existingchurches could make this kind of change.Agali did not argue but challenged Robato start the process in his community.Roba took the challenge and went tohis community in search of a person ofpeace. The community was predominantlya Muslim community where the menlike to gather in the public square in theafternoons to drink tea and to socialize.Roba went to the public square oneafternoon. He greeted the men andoffered to buy them tea telling them hehad come to get to know them. He toldthem although he is a Christian and theyare Muslims, they have been neighborsfor a long time and as people who honorGod maybe they should know eachother better. The Muslims invited Robato sit with them. As they were chattingtogether, Roba got an opportunity to tellthem a story from the Bible. He told themthe story of Zacchaeus. The men wereattentively listening to the story and whenhe reached the part of the story whenJesus said, “Today salvation has come tothis house because this man too is a sonof Abraham,” his listeners became moreattentive when the name of Abraham wasmentioned. After finishing drinking tea,and as they were parting they invited thepastor to come again with more stories.A few days later, Roba joined them againfor tea. After the usual greetings andtalking about current happenings in thecommunity, Roba asked them if theyremembered the story he had told themin his first visit. They told him they did.He asked them to repeat the story for him, which they did. After repeating the story,a lively discussion followed. One of themasked Roba if he believes that Jesus isGod. Roba threw the question back to themen and asked them, “if Jesus in the storyof Zacchaeus was able to give salvation tomen, does this not show that Jesus couldhave divine attributes that are not foundin men?” Some of the men responded inagreement by nodding their heads. These meetings over tea becamefrequent and regular. In a naturalprogression of the relationships, manyDiscovery Bible Groups and churcheswere established among theseMuslims, resulting in 32 small churches.—STORY SHARED WITH FTT BY 24:14FINISH THE TASK17

FINISHING THE TASK PARTNER TESTIMONIESNEW WINESKIN FOR NEW WINEWhen Pastor Kamau was invited toconduct a DMM training among a groupof pastors from a particular district, hedid not expect much to happen. Theywere skeptical because the people ofthe district were known as very nominalChristians and the existing churches hadlots of strong church traditions that didnot advance the gospel. Pastor Kamausaw little hope that the pastors of thesechurches would take up the challengeof Disciple Making Movements and applythem among their people. But happily, Pastor Kamau was proved tobe mistaken. Just four months after theDMM training, that region had seen 98new Discovery Groups, four generationsdeep in some streams.Pastor Ado shared that the DMM trainingwhich he took from Pastor Kamauchanged his mindset. Ado reported thatimmediately after he took the DMMtraining, he replaced the Sunday preachingwith Discovery Groups to see what wouldhappen, if any of the people would reportback about how they obeyed God.He relayed that his members reportedrenewed joy in their relationshipwith God and with each other. Somemembers reported being healed ofsicknesses during the prayers of theDiscovery Group.Pastor Ado says the members of hischurch were also coached to startDiscovery Groups in their homes andin their neighborhoods and 42 moregroups were started in just a few months. We see God using many people andgroups, and we praise God for the networkand collaboration of 24:14. We needto work together as the Body of Christ. We need to learn from others, as wellas to share what we are learning.—STORY SHARED WITH FTT BY 24:14But happily, Pastor Kamau was proved to be mistaken.Just four months after the DMM training, that regionhad seen 98 new Discovery Groups, four generationsdeep in some streams.FINISH THE TASK18
