ASCO Medium Voltage Power Transfer Switches

Product informationand specification guideASCO protects mediumvoltage loads by offeringmaintainable and highlyproven power transferswitches. The switchescan be configured withprotective relays and otheroptions to meet specificproject requirements.Switching at mediumvoltage is often preferredwhen most loads in a facility require protection, orwhen protected power isneeded at distances. Byplacing the switch nearthe source, often outside, and often with serviceentrance, many costlyinstallation complicationscan be avoided.Data centers and healthcare facilities, in particular, are being protected withmedium voltage emergencystand-by power. Other typical facilities include highrise commercial buildings, sports stadiums, water andwaste treatment plants, andpower generation stations.ASCO has been manufacturing custom switchgearand transfer switches since1947. It dedicates over600,000 square feet of factory and office space, acrossfour facilities, to designingand building systems thatmeet a range of demandingperformance requirements.Innovative designs anticipate and satisfy your evolvingpower switching and controls requirements.ASCO has developed every significant innovation in powertransfer technology since it debuted its first power transferswitch in 1920.2

A pair of medium voltage circuit breakersand an ASCO Group 5 Microprocessor Controller are theheart of ASCO Medium Voltage Power Transfer Systems. The Family of ASCO Medium Voltage Power Transfer SwitchesWhile ASCO Medium Voltage Power Transfer Switchesare functionally similarto low voltage transferswitches, they use a pairof medium voltage circuitbreakers rather than anASCO solenoid operatingmechanism. An ASCO 7000Series Power Control Centermanages the breaker operation to transfer critical loadsbetween power sources. There are three standardbase model switches available that can be providedwith most options andaccessories that are oftenrequired. Custom modifications can also be accommodated.ASCO Series 977 Medium Voltage Power Transfer SystemWe build the switches under strict quality control in afactory-controlled environment, then conduct testingthat complies with ANSIC37.20.2 Production Testsguidelines.Medium voltage switchescan be specified by selecting one of the base modelsshown in the chart below, then define specifics andoptions.Base models include acomplete transfer systemcomprising a structure, controls, circuit breakersand potential transformers. They provide basicfunctionality at the nominalamperage and voltage.Specify your system by selecting one of the base modelsshown in the chart below, then define specifics and options.3

Base models include a complete transfer system comprising a structure, controls, circuit breakers and potentialtransformers. They provide basic functionality at the nominal amperage and voltage. You can configure them foropen, closed, or delayed transition power transfer.Soft load transition requiresan optional controller.ASCO Medium Voltage Power Transfer SwitchesCapacitorsCapacitor trip devices provide the power to trip thebreakers open in the eventof a power outage, protecting loads from he 977 and 974 modelswith 1200A breakers areListed to UL 1008A; theseswitches are suitable for usein emergency power systems for hospitals, per NFPA99, and NEC Article 700.as those used for ASCOgenerator paralleling controlswitchgear, under UL File #E231663.The 973 model uses an IECrated breaker for international applications, andtherefore is not UL certified.Switches based on 2000Abreakers are not UL 1008AListed, but are manufactured to the similar requirements of ANSI C37.20and utilize UL Recognizedcubicle constructions.Transfer SwitchControllerAll ASCO Medium VoltagePower Transfer Switches arebuilt using the same ASCO/Underwriters Laboratoriesmanufacturing proceduresThis is the same controllerused on low voltage switches, and is described in detaillater in this brochure. The ASCO 7000 Series Control Center provides refinedand proven transfer control.Circuit Breakers:977 and 974Circuit breakers providesuperior reliability and maintainability compared to contactors. Each circuit breakercontains three separatelymounted vacuum interrupters with an integral contactwear gap indicator. Storedenergy devices allow fastoperation to interrupt andisolate faults.Transformers are chosen toprovide accurate waveformsto control and protect yourloads.ASCO uses ANSI meteringclass transformers which arebuilt per ANSI C57.13 standards to assure the highestreliability. The transformers are protected by oversized Class Efuses to assure no malfunctions could cause loads to beunprotected.Breakers can be removedeasily for inspection andmaintenance. Bypass functions are not required sincebreakers can be replacedwhile the loads are fed fromthe alternate source.5

Applications And a Variety of RequirementsApplications for medium voltagepower transfer systems include:Transferring medium voltage powerrequires a system that differs considerably from low voltage power transfersystems, which operate at less than600 volts. There are dramatic differences insize of load, construction, cost, location, maintenance andprotection.Protection issues, for example, include increased short-circuit currents, additional protective relaying such asdifferential protection, and synchronous check relaying, among others.Relay specifications need to considerutility relaying and settings. The sequence of circuit breaker operation also demands careful planning.Ground-fault sensing issues dueto multiple source grounding canbecome complex. Also, local power utilities maydetermine the selection of distributionsystem voltage and influence speci-fication requirements for equipmentconstruction and protective relays. In fact, metal-enclosed, loadinterrupter switchgear meeting ANSIC37.20.3-4 duty-cycle ratings mayneed to be specified.Work with a manufacturer of medium voltage power transfer systemswho understands these issues and canhelp you resolve the design, operational and service challenges you face. That will help ensure a reliable systemthat performs dependably over time.ASCO Medium Voltage Transfer Switches Ordering InformationMedium Voltage Transfer Switch Catalog 737477TransitionCO OpenA Auto C ClosedD sories0 2 5T1200Z3X025T Top600T 2,400U 4,160V 11,000W 12,470X 13,200Y 13,800Z 14,4003 3,3006 6,6007 7,2000 Other1 120VAC0 NoneX YesZ VAT031040050B BottomM Mixed12002000S Softload3 24VDCEnclosuresCC Type 1F Type 3R5 48VDC6 125VDCH Type 4XR Type 3RXASCO Medium Voltage Transfer Switches ower Manager w/ Display on LoadPower Manager w/ Display on NormalPower Manager w/ Display on EmergencyBasler BE1-50/51 on NormalBasler BE1-50/51 on EmergencySR489 on EmergencyTOC Breaker Truck Operated Contact SwitchSEL351S on LoadSEL351S On 51S on EmergencySR350 on LoadSR350 on NormalSR350 on Emergency3” Infrared ViewportsLightning Arrestor Distribution GE TranquellLightning Arrestor Intermediate GE TranquellLightning Arrestor Utility GE TranquellMimic Bus On Front138A139ACallService EntranceLabeled SwitchSpecial BreakerSection OrientationSpecial DistributionSection Required
