Our 106th annualconvention was full of energy andenthusiasm as our members, friends, and family gathered at the Renaissance Hotel indowntown Washington DC. The theme of this year‘s convention, Bridging Generations:Keeping Cultural Traditions Relevant in the New Oral Health Era was evidentthroughout the programs and activities prepared for attendees. Before our openingsession, in keeping with our mission and tradition, the launch of NDA- HEALTHNOW-Metro DC was held on site. Close to 200 hundred children and pregnant womenwere in attendance at the community outreach program and perinatal health fair andsymposium. The event was generously supported by our community stakeholders,corporate partners both old and new, and was a model for future interprofessionalcollaborations. Concurrently, the Minority Faculty forum was engaged in “Bridgingthe Cultural Divide in Oral Health Equity”. The ongoing efforts of our educators,administrators, and practitioners not only broadens the perspective of our studentdoctors, but also has a profound effect on the attitude and ideas about healthcarewithin the communities we serve. During the Minority Faculty, Administrator’s andPractitioner’s Luncheon, Dr. Jeanne C. Sinkford received the first NDA LifetimeAchievement Award. Those that arrived early were able to take advantage of thecomplementary passes to the National Museum of African American History andCulture. The afternoon was the time our leadership engaged in our ongoing leadershipdevelopment training in the Eddie G. Smith Leadership Institute. Good governance,and the effective and responsible management of an organization, can only occurthrough consistent education and ethical standards. All levels of our leadership receivethis training to maintain stability within the various segments of our association and toprovide continuity for the future.Receptions were held before the opening session to welcome distinguished guests,friends, and family to the convention. Mr. Noel Wallace, the new President and CEOof Colgate-Palmolive joined us for the first time since assuming his post. He deliveredgreetings and made a presentation during the Opening Session. After an inspiredperformance by the Cardinal Sheehan School Choir of Baltimore, Maryland, selectedand supported by Colgate, several awards were presented. Dr. Jeanne C. Sinkford, DeanEmeritus of Howard University College of Dentistry received the in NDA Legend awardfor her lifetime achievements. The life membership award was presented to NDA PastPresident Dr. Sheila R. Brown. Chairman of the Board, Dr. Cheryl Y. Lee, and NDAPast President Dr. Hazel J. Harper Johns, received the President’s award. The SpecialRecognition award was presented to Dr. Kim Turner and Assistant Secretary,Dr. Nicole Cheek. Dr. Jerel Owens was therecipient of the Delegate of the Year award.The continuing education throughout allthe family organizations which includes ourstudent programs, consisted of highly desiredtopics presented by nationally known speakers.We even had a live implant surgery on siteas part of the CE program. The President’sSymposium was one of the highlighted plenarysessions open to everyone. The panel ofspeakers were icons of industry and healthcarefrom the public and private sectors. Message from the NDA PresidentContinued from pg. 1event. Presentations were made by Mr. Stanley Bergman, CEO of Henry Schein Inc., Dr.C. Alicia Georges, National Volunteer President of AARP, and Rear Admiral Timothy L.Ricks, DMD, Assistant Surgeon General and Chief Dental Officer of the United StatesPublic Health Service. The questions and conversational exchange after the presentationswas both memorable and informative. Continuing education programs extended throughall days of the convention with a full day of courses on Sunday addressing newly requiredsessions for licensure in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.While there was no President’s Gala scheduled, there were several social, networking,and special events planned. After the opening session, a newly formatted PresidentsReception was held. The extensive buffet, music, and dancing was briefly interrupted fora special award presentation honoring Dr. Marsha Butler, Vice President, Global OralHealth and Professional Relations of Colgate-Palmolive. Friday and Saturday beganwith an early morning Zumba exercise class led by NDA staffer Ms. Shelaine Stone aspart of the Women’s Health Symposium. Colgate, once again, graciously hosted thePresident’s Luncheon on Friday. After a full day, 10 universities and the American DentalEducation Association hosted receptions for alumni and friends. On Saturday, the Dr.Alison P. Riddle-Fletcher Women Dentist’s Award Luncheon honored five phenomenalwomen with special awards. Ms. Karen Dale received the corporate award, Mrs. RomellaRodgers received the community leadership award, and Dr. Rochelle Rollins received theaward of excellence. Board Chair, Dr. Cheryl Y. Lee was recipient of the achievement andleadership award, and the legacy award was presented to Dr. Jeanne C. Sinkford. TheCivil Rights Luncheon was held Sunday. Political scientist, author, and international newscommentator Dr. Wilmer J. Leon, III was the keynote speaker. The SNDA’s Gala and Ritesof Passage was, as all other events, a well attended and enjoyable event.In all, the 106th Annual Convention was a memorable event for all that attended. Thankyou to our corporate sponsors, old and new, and our exhibitors. You made our communityoutreach and membership educational programs possible. Thank you to the Links Inc.,SNDA, and all the volunteers for your support in the launch of NDA-HEALTH NOWMetro DC . Message from the National OfficeGreetings NDA Family!SURVEY RESULTSThe Summer Edition of “Flossline” willhighlight the AWESOME Convention weheld at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel inWashington, DC, July 17 – 21, 2019. The President’s message sharesthe overall event highlights, and you will see convention photos in thisedition, along with organization updates.The 106th NDA Annual Convention was one of the best we have had. We held a live oralsurgery session! Several sessions were standing room only, and members had a great timenetworking. The dynamism from members, sponsors, supporters, partners, exhibitors,guests and staff was amazing. There were smiling faces everywhere you turned. We hadincreased participation using the real-time live polling through the mobile app sponsoredby Colgate-Palmolive. Some attendees participated using their laptops and tabletsthrough the internet URL. Our brand new NDA Main Stage session format, conducted forthe first time ever, went well. The 2020 convention format will be designed to increaseSNDA participants. Session rooms were set to encourage engagement and discussionsabout the subject matter. Saturday’s educational session was designed for all familyorganization members to start learning/training together. We will continue to work withNDA, SNDA, NDHA and NDAA on joint educational programing. The national office andscientific committees work very hard every year to provide courses that will enhance bothprofessional and personal growth, and experiences that will advance the NDA goals toincrease oral health equity and access.We were happy to include both NDHA President Ms. Barbara Seldon and NDAA PresidentMs. Angela Bowens who shared their organizations’ updates and goals. Student Dr.Akeadra Bell, SNDA’s newly installed National President, was on point with the newgenerations and continuing the legacy of the NDA in 2019 – 2020. She mentioned 350SNDA members were expected at the meeting and applause filled the room. Following theOpening Session, DJ Tyson had us on the dance floor during the President’s Receptions.DJ Tyson will be back next year, as he kept the dance floor flowing.The national office is here to assist and support our organization’s growth. Your voice is soimportant and needed as we continue NDA’s legacy. We continually strive to embrace allof our generations. I ask if you have an idea, program or any suggestions, do not hesitate toshare with me. Let’s work together to increase memberships and bring more new dentiststo the organization. Message from the ChairmanGreetings National Dental Association Family.As your Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the National Dental Association and President ofthe Robert T. Freeman Dental Society, I want to thank each one of you who attended the 106thNational Convention here in Washington, D.C. We are extremely blessed here in Washington, D.C.because we have the most committed, dedicated NDA members in the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society.Our Co-chairs Drs. St. Elmo Crawford, Hazel Harper Johns, and Edward Chappelle, Jr. led our team along with the national office togreat heights to achieve the accolades received from many of you.We created an unforgettable memory when we welcomed the new President and CEO, Colgate-Palmolive, Mr. Noel Wallace, to meetand greet our NDA family. As I stated during the opening session, I would love to see a visual image to show what reaching one billionchildren looks like because that is what our collective NDA family helped to achieve through the Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program.With the continued partnership, we are now beginning the second phase to reach the next one billion children, “One Smile at A Time”.What an exciting time to be a part of this National Dental Association Family.These last seven months have been quite enlightening. For those of you who have held the torch high and mighty, to whom we refer asour Past Presidents, I salute each one of you. It was truly an honor to be in your presence this year.I want to thank the members of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee who take time out of their busy work week during theyear to stop and get on the late-night calls, monthly calls and emergency calls on short notice to handle the business of your organization.To the House of Delegates under the leadership of Drs. Wayne Walker and Roderick Adams, thank you for your dedication and longhours of deliberating during this convention. Your time spent did not go unnoticed.NDAF, NDHA, NDAA and ANDA, thank you for allowing me a few minutes of your precious time to address each of you. I not only sawyou, I heard you. Let's create that committee to have a special session with all family leaders present to have that discussion, hopefully atthe next convention. None of us should feel like we are invisible because we are all invaluable to the progression of this organization.To our Student National Dental Association, my heart and soul was filled with your energy and presence at the convention. I tried totouch, hug and speak to as many of you as I could during the week trying to transfer some of your energy my way. I am anticipatingwith excitement as we observe your development and maturation as you prepare for leadership roles in the National Dental Association.Student Dr. Akeadra Bell, I hope we can plan impactful events over the next year. Community OutreachThe National Dental Association (NDA)launches NDA-HEALTH NOW-Metro DC By Nicole Cheek, DDSThe National Dental Association (NDA) launchedits signature program, NDA-HEALTH NOW , inWashington, DC, Thursday, July 18, 2019. Theconvention community outreach, a permanent featureof the annual convention, was conducted in partnershipwith the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Programat the Renaissance Downtown Hotel. Collaborators inthis event were SNDA, Howard University College ofDentistry and Dental Hygiene Department, the RobertT. Freeman Dental Society, and the Washington, DCChapter of the Links, Incorporated. Program sponsorsincluded Colgate, Delta Dental Insurance Company andDentaQuest. Other supporters were the Henry ScheinCares Foundation, Hear to HEAL, Inc., Sunstar, andVOCO.6The children’s program was a dental field trip for Boys & GirlsClubs of Greater Washington summer campers that included“Passport to Total Health ”, an educational circuit with seven (7)stations. The stations are: Happy Smiles are Healthy Smiles, OralHygiene Instructions, Sports Injury and Accident Prevention,Brush-a-Thon, Oral Health Video Theater, Step-Up-to-STEM,and the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures van. The OralHealth Video Theater showed educational videos including thecartoon “Dr. Rabbit and the Tooth Avengers” and “Links toHealthy Smiles”, an educational video produced by The Links,Incorporated. Step-Up-to-STEM is an age-appropriate children’sprogram with an oral health focus. This captivating programwas developed for NDA-HN by dental students, members of theStudent National Dental Association. The DC program featuredpresentations, demonstrations and interactive exercises for ages 5Visit us: ndaonline.org

through 12. One of the highlights for the children was doing “fillings”on dentoform teeth that were previously prepared by Howard dentalstudents. It was made even more fun with the multi-colored sparklycomposite material donated by VOCO. There was tons of fun to behad inside the hotel, but there was more fun waiting on the outsideas well.Colgate’s mascot, Dr. Rabbit, was on hand to escort the childrento the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures van located onthe sidewalk of the hotel. On the van, the children received oralscreenings and even more information on how to keep their mouthshealthy. The children enjoyed going on the van and getting the goodybags with dental products and fun educational activities inside.Colgate is long-time partner of the NDA and the major sponsor ofNDA-HN.
