Enrollment fornext year is taking place this month and we are asking for your assistance. Enrollment datais important as it impacts the number of sections offered for each class. Throughout thisprocess difficult decisions are made when balancing staffing to meet the needs for fillingstudent course requests. The decisions that are made during the next few weeks cannotbe undone when school starts in August. It is essential that students provide us with the bestcourse selection information as possible during the enrollment process. Please take anactive role as your student selects courses for 2018-19. Free State's new coach and novicedebaters found tournament successthis weekend at the Debate Coaches' Invitational and the Sunflower Novice State Championship Tournaments. Free State sent four teams, alljuniors, to the DCI, across-classification state tournamentfeaturing 38 of the top teams inKansas who competed this season to earn the right to participate. Li Gordon-Washingtonfinished as the fourth overall individual speaker; Li Gordon-Washington and Max Lillichwere the sixth-place team; Zach Hill and Alexi Sommerville were the 12th-place team andSpencer Yost-Wolff and James Vereen finished 14th. Based on a vote of the Kansas coaches, Kelly Thompson, Free State Debate coach, claimed the 2017-2018 Kansas DebateCoaches' Invitational Coach of the Year Award. "This award really belongs to the school,squad and our assistant coaches," said Thompson.At the Sunflower Novice State Championship, Free State's fourfreshman teams competed among 150 of the top Kansasnovice team. All four teams qualified for the eliminationrounds by placing in the Top 16 of the tournament.Jack Bellemere finished as the fourth overall individual speaker; Jack Bellemere and Gwen Elo made Quarterfinals andSavana Williams and Ethan Harris, Braiden Bangalan and LexiWhitson, and Tim Huffman and Jacob Wilkus broke Octofinals.Free State's novices earned second-place in Squad Sweepstakes, making them the Number 2-rated Novice Squad in Kansas. Congratulations, Firebirds!

Two Free State High Debate teams finishedas State Runners-Up at the KSHSAA StateDebate Championships.Congratulations to the 4-Speaker team ofTing Ting Shi, Amanda White, Zach Hill andAlexi Sommerville, and the 2-Speaker teamof Li Gordon-Washington and Max Lillich.The Math Departmentis offering after school tutoringin the school libraryfrom 3:30 pm to 4:30 pmMonday, Tuesday and Thursdayof each week.During this time there will be two mathteachers available for assistance with coursework. The students do not need toschedule or sign up ahead of time.

FREE STATE JAZZ COMBO PERFORMSSix students from Free State High School performed withthe John Philip Sousa Mid-Level Honor Band at the LiedCenter. Nina Jaramillo, Patricia Thomas, Theo Weis,Timothy Huffman, Jason Brown, and Hollis Wilkinsperformed with clinicians Andrew and Lyndsay Boysen,after being selected from over 500 auditions fromstudents across the state of Kansas.The honor band students enjoy performances from avariety of instrumental groups each year before theirafternoon concerts, and this year members of the 312thArmy Band were scheduled to perform. Unfortunately,due to the government shutdown, they were notallowed to perform. The Free State jazz combo steppedin at the very last minute to perform in their place. Jazzstudents organized amps, rides, and music with extremely short notice to deliver two great performancesfor the honor band students and their directors.2018 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the YearThe Liberty Hall stage is set to welcome three Boys & Girls Club ofLawrence candidates for the 2018 Youth of the Year ceremony onJanuary 25. Serving as the premier event for more than 4,000 Boys& Girls Clubs across the country, the Lawrence edition will featureHasiya Asuku, LHS junior, and Ruth Gathunguri, junior, and Christian LaPointe, senior, both of Free State.Those who earn the Youth of the Year title embody the values of leadership service, academic excellenceand healthy lifestyles. They exemplify the powerful impact that the Boys & Girls Club has on kids in Lawrence. "There are a lot of exciting things happening at the Boys & Girls Club - Teen Center construction is underway, new program initiatives are being launched in all of our sites and the culture of commitment to ourmission and values is strong," said Colby Wilson, BGCLK Executive Director. "Our Youth of the Year candidatesare the proof that these efforts are working. STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS!Student Council strives to bring together the student bodyas well as the community.This month, we are continuing to send STUCO students into our feeder elementary schoolsas volunteers in the classroom. We are also gearing up for “Winter Wish Week”, in which anystudent can make a wish.Student Council will be selling Free State green bracelets to help support Grit Henderson,the infant son of two Free State faculty members, who is currently battling cancer.Stay tuned for more information on Student Council activities.PERSONAL FINANCE COURSEOur world needs a more financially literate society more thanever before. Don’t be left at a disadvantage in life due to alack of basic financial knowledge. Personal Finance is acourse designed to help develop good money managementskills necessary to make good decisions for financial independence. This includes goalsetting, career planning, taxes, budgeting, investing, saving,debt, consumer protection, and identity theft. Students willdesign personal budgets, simulate use of checking and savingsaccounts, demonstrate knowledge of finance, debt, and creditmanagement, and prepare taxes. Students will use real worldresources, projects and simulations to enhance their learningexperience. This course will provide a foundational understandingfor making informed personal financial decisions.Personal Finance is listed as a recommended elective course on the Kansas Board ofRegents Qualified Admissions Curriculum.Check out this business course in the 2018-19 Course Description booklet on the districtwebsite.
