Aquatower Fiberglass Cooling Tower / Features and Benefits3All primary components of the Aquatower are open toview. You can easily clean the distribution basin and nozzleswhile the tower is in operation. You’ll enjoy single source responsibility and reliabilitybecause we design and manufacture virtually all majorcooling tower components. All Marley components are designed and selected tobe a part of an integrated system. For example, the spraypattern from nozzles and the pressure drop through drifteliminators both affect a fill’s heat transfer capacity. So, weinclude that impact in our thermal analysis. Drift eliminatorsmust be effective at the air velocities where fill is mostefficient. So, we’ve carefully designed both components towork together efficiently. How many other cooling tower companies can offeryou this assurance? They may use one brand of nozzlewith another brand of fill and another manufacturer’s drifteliminators. When they all come together, the whole may beless than the sum of the parts.Fiberglass construction brings the classic MarleyAquatower into the 21st century. This Aquatower combinesthe proven cooling tower technology of the Aquatower withthe proven corrosion resistance of fiberglass. The fiberglass structure eliminates concerns aboutcorrosion. Aquatower Fiberglass Cooling Tower / Construction and Components Water Distribution SystemWarm water flows through external piping (not includedwith the tower) into a splash box in the distribution basinat the top of the Aquatower. This splash box helps provideuniform water distribution and keeps the incoming waterfrom spilling out of the basin. Water then flows by gravityfrom the fiberglass basins through nozzles to the fill.Fiberglass basin covers are provided as standard equipmentto keep the basin free from airborne debris and to reducethe likelihood of biological growth. The distribution basin isa single piece, eliminating the risk of basin leaks betweenadjoining panels.6 Fill - Louvers - Drift EliminatorsMarley MX Fill features integral louvers and drifteliminators, designed to minimize resistance to airflow. Thispatented arrangement prevents water from escaping thefill, assuring proper heat transfer throughout wide variationsin airflow. Users find MX fill operates ice-free even inextremely cold weather. The thermoformed 15 mil (.015″) thick PVC fill sheetswithstand hot water temperatures as high as 125 F. Fillsheets are immune to biological and corrosive decay andtheir flame spread rating is less than 25 per ASTM E-84.Galvanized structural tubes support and stabilize the fill. They also hold the bottom of the fill sheets above the coldwater basin floor to simplify basin cleaning. Removable1″ x 1″ mesh galvanized air inlet screens keep largerairborne trash out of the collection basin and fill area.Distribution basin with cover being removedAll Aquatowers use Marley “Spiral Target” nozzles. These inert polypropylene nozzles are evenly spacedthroughout the distribution basin to assure uniform waterdistribution over all portions of the fill. Their large openingsresist clogging. Nozzles are easy to remove and replace ifyou ever want to change the design water flow rate.Marley Spiral Target distribution nozzleMarley MX Fill Cold Water Collection BasinThe Aquatower’s single-piece fiberglass collection basinreduces operating weight, simplifies basin cleaning andassures proper outflow. Water flows from the elevated areaunder the fill into the basin's rear depressed section, whereside suction piping connects, or for gravity flow applications,bottom-outlet piping connects,Standard equipment on each tower basin includes ascreened side-suction connection, a threaded standpipeoverflow and drain connection and a float-operated makeup valve. Mud sill and debris screen are included forgravity-flow bottom outlet connection. See page 8 for moreinformation on outlet piping. A stainless steel cover plate isprovided to seal the side-suction opening if not used.

Aquatower Fiberglass Cooling Tower / Construction and Components Mechanical EquipmentBelt-drive propeller fans ensure design airflow atminimum horsepower. Fans are supported by a stainlesssteel fan shaft in a cast iron oil-lubricated tapered rollerbearing assembly with remote oil reservoir.Fan drive motors are TEFC designed specifically forcooling tower use. Standard motor horsepower appears inthe table on page 4. Typical motor options appear on page 8.For ease of maintenance all drive components areaccessible from outside the tower. Hoisting and HandlingHoisting instructions on each tower explains how touse a spreader-bar and slings beneath the cold water basinfloor to hoist the Aquatower. The tower’s design also allowseasy handling with a forklift.7 SafetyAquatower safety features include fan guards and beltguards. Fan guards consist of welded heavy gauge steelwire hoops and spokes, hot dip galvanized after fabrication. The fiberglass belt guard encloses both belts and pulleys.Guards are easily removed for servicing. Construction and FinishAquatowers offer the corrosion resistance of fiberglassreinforced polyester. All structural components, includingthe distribution and collection basins, casing and fancylinder are chemically and biologically inert. Steelcomponents on the standard tower, such as the mechanicalequipment support, are G-235 galvanized—providing azinc thickness of 2.35 oz/ft2 per ASTM A-653. Assemblyhardware is also galvanized. Stainless steel componentsare available as an option at additional cost. See page 9 fordetails.Heavy-gauge galvanized steel support assembly simplifies handlingand installationFan and fan guard. Guard is easily removed for access to fan anddrive belts

Fiberglass Aquatower Cooling Tower / Engineering Data: Piping and Options Stainless Steel OptionInherently corrosion-proof fiberglass is the primaryconstruction material. A few components are galvanizedsteel as dictated by design considerations or manufacturingeconomics. These components benefit from the sameproven corrosion protection used on all steel MarleyAquatowers. Structural and formed steel componentsemploy G-235 galvanizing, the heaviest galvanizing usedin the industry. Assembly hardware is also galvanized toassure long service life in most atmospheres. For those steel components which contact thecirculating water, corrosive or atmospheric conditions maydemand the additional corrosion resistance of stainlesssteel. For these applications, all assembly hardware andinternal steel components are available in stainless steel. The stainless hardware option defined on page 9 includesall internal and external assembly hardware, mechanicalequipment supports, fill supports, and all distribution andcollection basin accessories. Field AssemblyIf you choose to assemble your Aquatower at the jobsite, your Aquatower can be shipped unassembled withcomplete assembly instructions. The adjacent table shows the sizes and weights of thelargest Aquatower components for each model. You canuse this information to plan your rigging and transportationneeds.9On all towers, the supporting steel members, air inletscreen and fan guard remain galvanized steel. Theseexternal, heavy-gauge components provide long servicelife even in corrosive atmospheres. The supporting steel isG-235 galvanized, and completely removed from the watercirculating on the cooling tower. The air inlet screen and fanguard are heavy-gauge welded wire, hot-dipped galvanizedafter welding in accordance with ASTM A-123. Aquatower Fiberglass Cooling Tower / Engineering Data: Freeze PreventionWhen the ambient air temperature falls below 32 F,the water in a cooling tower can freeze. Marley TechnicalReport #H-003 “Operating Cooling Towers in FreezingWeather” describes how to prevent freezing duringoperation. Ask your Marley sales representative for a copyor download from our website.Water collects in the cold water basin during shutdowns, and may freeze solid. You can prevent freezing by addingheat to the water left in the tower. Or, you can drain thetower and all exposed piping at shutdown. Electric Basin HeatersThe Marley automatic basin beater system, consisting ofa single-phase, 120V, 1.5 kW tank-type heater is mountedon a stainless steel plate in the depressed section of thecollection basin. An internal thermostat maintains watertemperature about 40 F and acts as a safety shut-off incase the water level drops below the heating element. Thefollowing table shows the required number of heaters pertower.Quantity of 1.5kW Heaters RequiredTower ModelAmbient Temperature F10Maximum Bottom Outlet GPMOutlet DiameterTower 625495140310550850Note: Maximum GPM applies to both pump and gravity flow piping systems. The outlet piping on gravity flow systems must have sufficient vertical dropto overcome all other head losses in the systemThe amount of water needed to successfully operatethe system depends on the tower size, GPM and thevolume of water contained in the piping system to and fromthe tower. You must select a tank large enough to containthose combined volumes—plus a level sufficient to maintaina flooded suction on your pump. Control makeup wateraccording to the level where the tank stabilizes duringoperation. You should always use a bottom outlet for this type ofpiping system.
