Aquatower Steel Cooling Tower — Features and Benefits3All Marley components are designed and selected to be apart of an integrated system. For example, the spray pattern fromnozzles and the pressure drop through drift eliminators bothaffect a fill’s heat transfer capacity. So, we include that impact inour thermal analysis. Drift eliminators must be effective at the airvelocities where fill is most efficient. So, we’ve carefully designedboth components to work together efficiently. How many other cooling tower companies can offer you thisassurance? They may use one brand of nozzle with brand of filland another manufacturer's drift eliminators. When they all cometogether, the whole may be less than the sum of the parts. Our total system approach assures that all the parts worktogether to provide you the greatest total performance. Andbecause we design specifically for cooling towers, all ourcomponents will provide many years of service with minimalmaintenance.Today’s Aquatower may be the most space/energyefficient cooling tower available. Your needs have dictatedconstant technological improvement. Thousands of Aquatowerusers enjoy the benefits of eight major redesigns and dozensof minor improvements in the past 65 years. For example, PVCfilm-fill enables the Aquatower to reject more heat per unit size.We also put the air inlet louvers and drift eliminators right on thefill sheets. This new arrangement saves you fan horsepower byimproving airflow through the tower. The Aquatower is a maintenance delight! You’ll appreciatethe way the Aquatower simplifies maintenance. No hidden spraysystems, tiny nozzles, or enclosed basins here! You can easilyreplace and align V-belts from outside the tower. All primary components of the Aquatower are open to view. You can easily remove any debris from the upper basin or nozzleswhile the tower is in operation.Heavy mill galvanizing on all steel components preventsbase metal corrosion. You won’t have to worry about paint chipsclogging your strainers and nozzles, because there is no paint toflake off. Heavy galvanizing also protects much better than paint. You’ll enjoy single source responsibility and reliability becausewe design and manufacture virtually all major cooling towercomponents.Every Aquatower cooling tower carries a full one-yearwarranty. The Aquatower you buy from us will work on your job orwe’ll make it right. Your warranty includes thermal performanceand every component of the tower. Aquatower Steel Cooling Tower — Construction and Components6WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMFILL/LOUVERS/DRIFT ELIMINATORSWarm water flows through external piping (not includedwith the tower) into a splash box at the top of the Aquatower. This splash box contains the incoming water and helps provideuniform water distribution. Water then flows by gravity from thebasin through nozzles located over the fill. Hot water distributionbasin covers are provided as standard equipment to keep thedistribution basin free from airborne debris and to reduce thelikelihood of biological growth.Marley MX Fill features integral louvers and drift eliminators, designed to minimize resistance to airflow. This patentedarrangement prevents water from escaping the fill, assuring properheat transfer throughout wide variations in airflow. Users find MXfill operates ice-free even in extremely cold weather. The thermoformed PVC fill sheets withstand hot watertemperatures as high as 125 F. Fill sheets are immune tobiological and corrosive decay and their flame spread rating is lessthan 25 per ASTM E-84. Galvanized structural tubes support andstabilize the fill. They also hold the bottom of the fill sheets abovethe cold water basin floor to simplify basin cleaning. Removable1" x 1" mesh galvanized air inlet screens keep larger airbornetrash out of the collection basin and fill area.Eliminator air-seal removed showing nozzle distribution area above fillAll Aquatowers use Marley “Spiral Target” nozzles. Theseinert polypropylene nozzles are evenly spaced throughout thedistribution basin to assure uniform water distribution over allportions of the fill. Their large openings resist clogging. Nozzlesare easy to remove and replace if the design water flow rate needsto be changed.MX FillCOLD WATER COLLECTION BASINThe Aquatower’s collection basin simplifies basin cleaning, and assures proper outflow. Water flows from the elevated areaunder the fill into the basin’s rear depressed section, where sidesuction piping connects. A bottom outlet is also available forgravity flow applications.Marley Spiral Target distribution nozzleStandard equipment on each tower basin includes: a screenedsuction connection; a threaded overflow connection, a threadedand plugged drain connection and a float-operated make-up valve.Models 492 through 496 also include a bottom outlet conformingto 125# flange specifications. A blank cover plate is provided toseal the outlet opening if not used.

Aquatower Steel Cooling Tower — Construction and Components7MECHANICAL EQUIPMENTBelt-drive propeller fans ensure design airflow at minimumhorsepower. Fans are supported by a stainless steel fan shaft ina cast iron, oil-lubricated, tapered roller bearing assembly withremote oil reservoir. For ease of maintenance all drive componentsare accessible from outside the tower.Fan drive motor showing adjustable base and belt guardHOISTING AND HANDLINGHoisting instructions on each tower explains how to use aspreader-bar and slings beneath the cold water basin floor to hoistthe Aquatower. The tower’s design also allows easy handling with aforklift.SAFETYStandard Aquatower safety features include fan guards and beltguards. Fan guards consist of welded heavy gauge steel wire hoopsand spokes, hot dip galvanized after fabrication. The galvanizedsteel belt guard encloses both belts and pulleys. Guards are easilyremoved for servicing.Fan guard is easily removed for access to fan and drive beltsCONSTRUCTION AND FINISHFan drive motors are TEFC designed specifically for coolingtower use. Standard motor horsepower appears in the table onpage 4. Other types of motors are available. Typical options appearunder Optional Accessories on page 10.CAUTIONThe cooling tower must be located at such distanceand direction to avoid the possibility of contaminateddischarge air being drawn into building fresh airintake ducts. The purchaser should obtain theservices of a Licensed Professional Engineer orRegistered Architect to certify that the location ofthe cooling tower is in compliance with applicable airpollution, fire and clean air codes.Aquatowers offer the corrosion protection of G-235 galvanizedsteel—providing a zinc thickness of 2.35 oz/ft per ASTM A-653—providing long term protection for the steel. Assembly hardware isalso galvanized.2

Aquatower Steel Cooling Tower — Engineering Data: Freeze Prevention8When the ambient air temperature falls below 32 F, the waterin a cooling tower can freeze. Marley Technical Report#H-003 “Operating Cooling Towers in Freezing Weather”describes how to prevent freezing during operation. Ask yourMarley sales representative for a copy or download from ourwebsite.INDOOR TANK METHODWater collects and is stored in the cold water basin duringshutdowns, and may freeze solid. You can prevent freezing byadding heat to the water left in the tower or, you can drain thetower and all exposed piping at shutdown. The table on page 9 lists typical drain-down capacitiesfor all Aquatower models. Although we do not produce tanks, many of our representatives offer tanks supplied by reputablemanufacturers.ELECTRIC BASIN HEATERSTwo types of automatic basin heater systems are availablebased on your site conditions and preferences. You may choose a heater system consisting of thesecomponents (shipped separately for installation by others): Stainless steel electric immersion heater element(s). Threadedcouplings are provided for installation.NEMA 4 enclosure containing these components:–Magnetic contactor to energize heater.–Transformer to convert power supply to 24 volts forcontrol circuit.– Solid state circuit board for heater control and low-water cutoff.Enclosure may be mounted on the side of the tower.Control probe to monitor water temperature and water level.Threaded couplings are provided for installation.Or you may prefer a pre-assembled submersible tank-typeheater which requires no tower modification and can plug into astandard grounded 3-prong 120V outlet. The Incoloy heater element was chosen for its long life insubmerged environments. A built-in thermostat senses watertemperature and controls the supply of electricity to maintainproper water temperature. A built-in safety switch cuts off powerwhenever the element is exposed to air. The element mounts inthe tower basin on a stainless steel plate.Any exposed piping that is still filled with water at shutdown—including the makeup water line—should be electrically traced andinsulated (by others). With this system, water flows from an indoor tank, through theload system, and back to the tower, where it is cooled. The cooledwater flows by gravity from the tower to the tank located in aheated space. At shutdown, all exposed water drains into the tank, where it is safe from freezing. The amount of water needed to successfully operate thesystem depends on the tower size, GPM and the volume of watercontained in the piping system to and from the tower. You mustselect a tank large enough to contain those combined volumes—plus a level sufficient to maintain a flooded suction on your pump.Control makeup water according to the level where the tankstabilizes during operation. You should always use a bottom outlet for this type of pipingsystem. The table on page 9 lists the flow capacities for bottomoutlets.Basin Heater SelectionTowerModel 10 F Ambient-10 F AmbientTank HeaterComponentHeaterTank HeaterComponentHeater4901.5 kW3 kW1.5 kW3 kW4921.5 kW3 kW1.5 kW3 kW4931.5 kW3 kW2 @ 1.5 kW3 kW4942 @ 1.5 kW3 kW2 @ 1.5 kW3 kW4952 @ 1.5 kW3 kW3 @ 1.5 kW4.5 kW4963 @ 1.5 kW4.5 kW4 @ 1.5 kW6 kW1.
