About this RepoRtGary Kelly: Chairman, President, and CEOD2oing the Right Thing. It’s not just a slogan atSouthwest Airlines; it is our way of life. Wepractice this concept in a million different ways, every day. Southwest is privileged to serve millionsof Customers annually who have chosen to patronizeus with their hard-earned money. Southwest honorsour Customers’ patronage by doing the right thing forthem—providing Safe, comfortable, and reliable airtransportation. Our Mission Statement puts it thisway: “The mission of Southwest Airlines is dedicationto the highest quality of Customer Service deliveredwith a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and Company Spirit.”The 35,000 Employees of Southwest Airlines arethe heart and soul of our Company. Doing the rightthing for these Employees includes providing them witha stable work environment with equal opportunity forlearning and personal growth. Creativity and innovationare encouraged for improving the effectiveness ofSouthwest Airlines. Above all, Employees will beprovided the same concern, respect, and caring attitudewithin the organization that they are expected to shareexternally with every Southwest Customer. Our planet sustains us, and, if treated right,it will provide us with stability. To recognize theimportance of our home, one only needs to look at theexhilarating photo of Earth that was photographedby the Astronauts of Apollo 8. In this one picture, itis possible to contrast the lushness of our planet withthe stark bareness of the moon. Earth appears as awelcoming lifeboat in the void of space. Doing the rightthing for our planet is not just “good business,” it isnecessary for our survival. It takes a lot of dedication, perseverance, andhard work to do the right thing for our Customers,Employees, and Planet, and this report outlinesour environmental efforts and our goals. We beganoperations in 1971 with a revolutionary idea thateveryone should be able to afford to fly instead of driveand to enjoy the Safety, comfort, and convenience ofair travel. For the past 38 years, we have devotedourselves to meeting that goal. Not only do we workhard with what we call a Warrior Spirit, we work smart. That means being as productive as possible withoutwasting either efforts or materials. Our Customershave responded. In the ensuing 38 years, we havegrown to serve 64 (68 with the announced additions ofMinneapolis, New York LaGuardia, Boston Logan, andMilwaukee in 2009) cities that we also consider to beour hometown communities. Being careful stewardsof the environment has allowed us to keep our costsdown and our fares low, and 2008 marked our 36thconsecutive year of profitability. Southwest Airlines’total operating revenue was approximately 11 billion, and total operating income was 449 million, followingGenerally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).Obviously, the fewer materials we consume, thefewer natural resources are depleted. This report

Reducing our fuel consumptionreduces U.S. dependency on foreign oil and it alsoreduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our effortsto reduce GHG emissions in 2008 eliminated more than319,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Youwill learn details of those efforts, including blendedwinglets, Gate Services for onboard power and air forthe aircraft at the gate, engine washing, and electricground service vehicles, just to name a few. As youread about these efforts, keep in mind that the airlineindustry, which carries millions of people every year, hasimproved its fuel efficiency by 110 percent since 1978.This resulted in a reduction of 2.5 billion metric tons ofGHG emissions.1Looking forward, we support several programs tofurther reduce GHG emissions, including a completeoverhaul and modernization of the outdated Air TrafficControl System (ATC) – we support the Next GenerationAir Traffic Control system (NextGen), which includesa state-of-the-art satellite-based navigation system.Southwest is the first airline to commit to spendingmillions of dollars to retrofit our entire fleet withRequired Navigation Performance (RNP) technology, which is a cornerstone of NextGen. We supportadopting the entirety of NextGen as soon as possible.Once NextGen is in place throughout the industry, it isprojected that fuel and GHG emissions reductions will1In 1978, commercial airlines carried 2.92 revenue ton miles per gallonof fuel used. In 2007, commercial airlines carried up to 6.11 revenueton miles per gallon of fuel used, an improvement of 109.6 percent.Source: Air Transport Association.range from six to 15 percent.Southwest, in cooperation with other air carriers, supports a balanced and comprehensive nationalenergy policy that increases the country’s energyindependence. This includes the development ofalternative fuels, increasing domestic oil and gassupplies in an environmentally sensitive manner, andadditional energy conservation measures.Southwest also supports advances in airframeand jet engine design. While aircraft manufacturershave made today’s aircraft quieter and cleaner thanany before, advanced wing systems and surfaces thatreduce drag will further reduce our fuel needs andGHG emissions. You will also read about how our Employees strive tobe good neighbors in the communities we serve throughinvolvement in all aspects of the community. For thoseof us at Southwest, Doing the Right Thing comesnaturally. It is an extension of our Culture, and it reallyis part of our corporate DNA.3
