Get theWelcomeWelcome to COSUGI 2013 andwelcome to Utah! This is my home andI hope you take the time to enjoy the beauty andsplendor of the inter-mountain west.It seems like every year we are “On The Edge” inour approach to these conferences. This year is nodifferent, but this time we are admitting it up front. With RDA looming, ebooks burgeoning into ourcollections, demands on staff and resourcesincreasing while budgets shrink and a plethora ofother challenges, it’s no wonder we all feel like weare always “on (the) edge.” But is that necessarilya bad thing? Look at the mountains to the east sideof this valley. I have climbed many of them. One ofthe main reasons why is the opportunity to stand ina place above everything else around you and to seeit all spread out in a majestic tapestry. To see placesto go and have experiences to expand knowledgeand understanding. I think conferences can be likethat; a chance to step back, and get some newperspective(s). Even as our resources get stretchedto the maximum, we can still climb this mountain andlook over the edge and see opportunity and success. Our goal in holding this conference each year is togive you opportunities to acquire new and additionalideas and strategies for moving forward to meet theopportunities that await you. As you plan out yourconference experience, take advantage of some of thenew and innovative work your peers are presenting.Hopefully you will be inspired to create someinnovation of your own. Maybe you will even take theCOSUGI 2013 Annual Conferenceopportunity to present your experience and ideas atnext year’s conference.I also take this opportunity to thank the many peoplewho have helped make this conference a reality:our conference chair, Kay Dunker and co-chair MarkWitteman have worked tirelessly to plan a great eventhere in Utah. The entire COSUGI board who have lenttheir advice and support. The folks at SirsiDynix for theirefforts both in helping with planning and presentingand also financially along with many other vendors whohave sponsored events, breaks and gifts. To Pia Jonesand her staff at ICM for all the work behind the scenesto see that the conference comes off flawlessly (atleast it always looks that way). To Shawn Andary fromthe Upper Peninsula Region of Library Cooperation inMichigan and Ruthanne Hansen from Utah State Libraryfor being our local arrangements contacts. And to thegreat state of Utah and to Salt Lake City for being ourgracious hosts. And finally, to you, our membership foryour support of this conference, which continues to giveus an opportunity to move our profession and ourselvesin a forward direction.Have a great conference!Tim RowleyCOSUGI Chair1
