If you get Social Security benefits, you mustreceive your payments electronically. Youcan do so by signing up for direct deposit,which sends payments directly into yourbank account. Or, you can have yourbenefits automatically deposited into yourDirect Express Debit MasterCard account.Direct depositDirect deposit is a simple, safe, and secureway to get benefits. If you wish us to sendyour payment to a bank or credit unionaccount, you must have all of the followinginformation when you apply: Your Social Security number. Financial institution’s routingtransit number. Account type (checking or savings). Account number.Contact your bank to help you sign up fordirect deposit. Or, sign up through SocialSecurity.You may also call Go Direct at1-800-333-1795 (English) and1-800-333-1792 (Spanish) to sign up fordirect deposit. Please note that Go Direct is only available for beneficiaries receivingbenefits by check.What is the DirectExpress card?The Direct Express card is a prepaiddebit card you can use to access yourbenefit payments. And you don’t needa bank account.1

With the Direct Express card program, wedeposit your federal payment directly intoyour card account. Your monthly funds willbe available on your payment day — ontime, every time. You can use the card tomake purchases, pay bills, or get cash atthousands of locations.And most transactions are free.The Direct Express card is both safer andmore convenient than paper checks. Anyonereceiving Social Security or SupplementalSecurity Income payments can enroll, evenif they don’t have a bank account. You nolonger have to wait for the mail or worryabout lost or stolen checks.Why should I sign up forelectronic payments? Safety. There’s no risk of lost or stolenchecks. When reported promptly, yourmoney is protected, even if your DirectExpress card is lost or stolen. Ease. Your money is automaticallyposted to your bank account or to yourDirect Express card account on yourpayment day each month. You won’thave to wait for the mail to arrive. Convenience. You don’t need to makea trip to cash or deposit a check. WithDirect Express , make purchasesanywhere a Debit MasterCard isaccepted. Use your card to get cash backwith purchases at retail locations, banks,and ATMs throughout the country.2

How do I use the DirectExpress card?The Direct Express card is simple andeasy to use. You can use it to: Make purchases. Present your cardwhen paying at any location thataccepts Debit MasterCard . Themoney is automatically deductedfrom your balance. Get cash. Get cash at ATMs, banks,or credit unions. Or, get cash back withpurchases at many retail locations. Pay Bills. A one-time set up of yourmonthly bills for automatic payment. Youcontrol when and how much is paid foreach bill. Pay your utilities, phone, cableTV, and more.How secure is the DirectExpress card?The Direct Express card offers benefits thatmake it safer and more secure than checks. A personal identification number protectsyour account. Your card account has federalconsumer protection, and your moneyis FDIC insured. If your card is lost or stolen, itwill be replaced.Can I use the Direct Express card without any fees?Yes, you can use your card for free. Thereis no sign-up fee and no monthly accountfee. You can create a my Social Securityaccount if you’re age 18 or older, have aSocial Security number, a valid U.S. mailingaddress, and an email address. To create anaccount, go to www.ssa.gov/myaccount.You’ll need to provide some personalinformation to confirm your identity; you’ll beasked to choose a username and password;then you’ll be asked for your email address.You’ll need to select how you would liketo receive a one-time security code — toa text-enabled cell phone or to the emailaddress you registered — that you will needto enter when you create your account. Eachtime you sign in with your username andpassword, we will send a one-time securitycode to your cell phone or to your emailaddress. The security code is part of ourenhanced security feature to protect yourpersonal information. Keep in mind that yourcell phone provider’s text message and datarates may apply.You can use your my Social Security accountto get a benefit verification letter, to checkyour earnings and work record, and in somestates request a replacement Social Securitycard.
