We’re thrilled that the Georgia Department of Transportation adopted the Pedestrian SafetyAction Plan we helped develop. We’re also pleased that the Atlanta Regional Commission’snew safety action plan, as well as new local and state design guides, incorporate many of ourrecommendations.

The demonstration project we provided showed transportation professionals, elected officials, andothers how to make safe access in work zones a reality.Atlanta City Council member Amir Farokhi (center) observedthe demo and pledged to work with city officials to make safework zones mainstream. The protected walkway on West Peachtree Street was a big hitwith people who used it.

MESSAGE FROM THECHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENTDuring 2018 you joined supporters from throughout Georgia to help makeour streets and communities great places to walk. The third annual Georgia Walks Summit, which we held in Rome, enabled us to build andstrengthen partnerships throughout the state. We then got an early start preparing for the2019 summit, which we expect will be ourbiggest and best yet.We also presented Designing for PedestrianSafety workshops that helped transportationprofessionals expand their safety toolboxes.Technical support we provided included helpingAtlanta establish regulations that prohibitedpeople from riding scooters on sidewalks orparking in ways that block sidewalks. And perhaps most important, your supportenabled us to introduce people withdisabilities to attorneys willing to provide legalrepresentation. The class-action lawsuit plaintiffsfiled aims to force Atlanta to change its practices, install curb ramps, and fix broken sidewalks. That’s the kind of concrete action steps we need. These are just a few of the issues you addressedwhen you partnered with PEDS to save lives, encourage people to walk more, and createwalk-friendly communities. Your contributionsmake our work possible. Stay involved, speak up,and keep on walking.2019 BOARDOF DIRECTORSAndrew Hixson, ChairJohn AdamsLiz BibbyMarielena GuitierrezScott HaggardAnn HanlonKathryn HarrisonWill HerbigEverett MorrisJules MurphyCarolyn RaderCelia WillisSTAFFSally FlocksPresident & CEOHayley HamiltonCommunity EngagementManagerLarissa BradburnOperations Managerpeds.org

Yet we’re optimisticthe outcome will resolve what might otherwiseremain an intractable problem.“We don’t want to fight the city,” plaintiff Laurel Lawson said.“We just want to help them do what is hard but right.”Broken sidewalks endanger and block access to people withdisabilities.
