TransformationalLeadershipRhonda Hatfield, BSN, MBA, RN, CCRNRegional Chief Nursing Officer, Senior Vice President Patient Care ServicesGreetings! What a wonderful year 2019 was for Nursing at CHIMemorial. Each year I find myself thinking, “Wow! Howcan we accomplish anything more?” Then this teamjust outdoes themselves again! First, CHI Memorialcompleted the merger with Dignity Health, creatingCommonSpirit Health, the largest Catholic not-forprofit ministry in the United States. This is no smallfeat. It is a little staggering to stop and think that onein four Americans will receive care in a CommonSpiritministry. As if that was not enough, CHI Memorial acute carefacilities replaced our Meditech charting system withEPIC electronic health record. This required more thana year of planning, application builds, coordinationwith our Texas market, as well as hours of trainingand practice by our clinicians. Giving up paperdocumentation is scary, much like riding without thetraining wheels on your bike. However, the ability forour medical record to work for both the clinician andpatient within EPIC is exponential. Electronic healthrecords will also increase interoperability withinour health care community and office practices.Continuous optimization helps us to expand ourfuture data collection and efficiency.CHI Memorial nursing continues to be devotedto the advancement of specialty certificationand nursing education. In 2019 we committed toincreasing bedside nurses acquiring certification in6their specialty. This commitment is followed withon-site training seminars, educational allowance, and annual celebrations for these nurses committedto being subject matter experts and leaders intheir departments. In addition to certification, CHIMemorial began a loan forgiveness program tosupport the RNs returning to school to advance theireducation. Nine nursing scholarships were awardedinternally to employees pursuing nursing degreesand for RNs advancing their degrees in nursing.CHI Memorial proudly supports partnerships withBrainerd High Explorers program and the FutureReady Program of Hixson High school helping to buildthe future of healthcare in our secondary educationprograms. Recognizing the importance of investing inour next generation of healthcare is a great passion ofmine. Finally, we updated our Nursing Vision which you willsee later in this report. CHI Memorial is known for itsmission-based health care. Our nurses are central tothis mission. So much so, that we believe our visionmust be the foundation of how we practice. We mustbe the face that represents CHI Memorial and thelegacy of our founding Sisters. We are excited to carrythis vision into 2021. What an honor it is to care forour community!
