ABOUT USThe School of Nursing was founded in 1898 and graduated five women in 1901. Since that time, the school hasgraduated over 2,000 men and women. Many of our graduates hold distinguished positions in NursingEducation, varied areas of Nursing and health related services. The School of Nursing is a hospital-baseddiploma program providing a unique blend of nursing theory and a strong clinical component. We continue toprovide quality health care service to the community by working to promote health, prevent disease and treatillness. We offer two program options, a 16-month (over the course of two years) day time option and a 22month evening-weekend option.Since its founding in 1890, Roxborough Memorial Hospital has provided comprehensive acute care andchronic care services with compassion to families in Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls and the surroundingareas of Northwest Philadelphia and Montgomery County. The 131-bed hospital is a fully licensed facilityaccredited by the Joint Commission (TJC).Roxborough Memorial Hospital and the School of Nursing have great faith in our mission and commitment tothe highest standards of medical and nursing excellence. Students are guided to apply newknowledge in order to assess patient needs and to develop and implement individualized plans of nursing carein a variety of clinical settings.In the second year, students build on their first year studies and incorporate more advanced nursing knowledgeto create plans for comprehensive care in complex nursing situations.All clinical practice settings have been selected to enhance the academic offerings, to reinforce classroomlearning and to facilitate achievement of the desired goal of excellence in nursing practice.Student levels of achievement are evaluated through observation and testing. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSHIGH SCHOOL REQUIREMENTSADMISSION PROCEDUREAdmission to the program is based on prior academicperformance. Transferstudents are required to begin courses at the Nursing100 level. Any student that has attended a previousnursing program must provide documentation from theDean of the school stating that they withdrew from theprogram in good academic standing and were notdismissed from that program for a disciplinary matter.Additional documentation may be required.NON-DISCRIMINATORY POLICYAdmission to the School of Nursing is withoutregard to race, color, religion, sex, sexualorientation, national origin, marital status, age,disability, or any characteristic protected by law.Submit official high school transcripts, GEDscores, and official college transcripts from allschools attended.A standardized pre-nursing exam is required. There are classroom and clinical coursesintegrated into each semester that are mandatoryand require preparation. Students in the Schoolof Nursing are therefore strongly advised to limittheir hours of work and/or other non-studentcommitments during the academicyear. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS (DAY AND EVENING-WEEKEND) 2019-2020FIRST YEAR CURRICULUMNursing 100 Foundations of NursingThis course introduces the student to the role of the professional nurse within the health care delivery system. A holisticframework is used to assist the student to identify health care needs of diverse individuals. There is an emphasis on theimportance of communication and collaboration with the patient and with other health care professionals in order toprovide comprehensive care. The course introduces the student to teaching and learning principles used to assist patientsto achieve optimal health. The course explores the concept of critical thinking in the context of clinical practice andemphasizes legal, ethical, spiritual, and cultural bases for professional practice. The student is provided with thetheoretical and clinical foundations necessary to deliver safe, quality care based on evidence within the framework of thenursing process. The student is expected to demonstrate basic nursing skills based on best practices in the clinicallaboratory and in various health care agencies.Placement:Credits: 12Prerequisites:Required Course, First YearHours: Theory 180 hours/Clinical 270 hoursAdmission to the Nursing ProgramNursing 200 Medical-Surgical Nursing I and Mental Health NursingThis course uses a holistic framework and the nursing process to help the student to care for patients who have a varietyof disease processes. In the medical-surgical module, the student applies knowledge of pathophysiology, physicalassessment and pharmacology in order to plan evidence-based care for hospitalized patients. In the mental healthmodule, the student cares for patients experiencing alterations in behavior, mood and cognition. Emphasis is placed ontherapeutic communication and use of the self as therapeutic agent. Students are expected to apply teaching and learningprinciples to patient-centered education. SECOND YEAR CURRICULUMNursing 300 Medical-Surgical Nursing IIThis course uses a holistic framework and the nursing process to assist the student to provide evidence-based care forpatients with acute and chronic illnesses. As the course progresses, the student provides care for patients experiencingthe impact of complex multisystem pathophysiology. The course highlights the impact of these illnesses on patients andtheir families. There is continued emphasis on communication, collaboration, critical thinking and provision of safe,quality care within the professional role. Students are expected to advocate for their patients and assist them to achieveoptimal health and independence.Placement:Required Course, Second YearCredits: 12Hours: Theory 180 hours/Clinical 270 hoursPre-requisites: Nursing 100 and Nursing 200Nursing 400 Management of CareThe first part of this course uses a holistic framework and the nursing process to focus the student on provision of care tochildbearing and childrearing families. Emphasis is placed on expected changes of pregnancy and on unanticipatedcomplications. Also emphasized are normal growth and development from infancy through adolescence and the impactof illness on infants, children, adolescents and their families. Students are expected to use their nursing knowledge andteaching skills to enhance the health of new and established families. There is continued emphasis on communication,collaboration, critical thinking and provision of safe, quality care within the professional role in order to assist patientsand families to achieve optimal health.The second part of this course is designed to broaden the student’s perspective of the nurse’s role in influencing andimproving health care systems. The student is assisted to use evidence-based practice and best practices to manage carefor individuals, families, groups and communities. All previously learned concepts are synthesized as the studentprepares to graduate.
