Z540.3 is the naturalevolution of ANSI/NCSL Z540.1-19942, ANSI/NCSL Z540.219973, and MIL-STD-456624.Agilent Compliance to Z540.3Agilent Technologies was an active participant in theNCSLI 171 subcommittee that authored the Z540.3Handbook. The handbook committee devoted special attention to meeting the Z540.3 requirement: “The probabilitythat incorrect acceptance decisions (false accept) willresult from calibration tests shall not exceed 2% and shallbe documented.” (paragraph 5.3b) The Z540.3 Handbookprovides details on six compliance methods. Method 5 isidentical to the conformance recommendation ofILAC-G85. ILAC-G8 is the standard most preferred byaccreditation bodies worldwide for compliance toISO 17025 paragraph 5.10.4.2. “When statements of compliance are made, the uncertainty of measurement shall betaken into account”. “Agilent calibration uncertainties guardbanding” service, already available for over 500HP/Agilent products, complies with ILAC-G8 and thereforealso complies with Z540.3. Z540.3 Compliance Method 5 DetailsZ540.3 Compliance for Licensed Users ofAgilent N7800 Calibration SoftwareThe essential requirements for compliance with ILAC-G8 orZ540.3 Method 5 are as follows:Agilent Service Centers run the N7800A software platformfor “Agilent cal uncertainties guardbanding” calibration service. Licensedusers of N7800A calibration procedures who select the“ISO 17025 mode” are also in compliance with Z540.3, asexplained in the previous section.1. Develop measurement uncertainty for each measuredpoint and each performance test per the ISO GUM,“Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement.”2. Employ a guard band in the amount of the 95% expanded uncertainty as the Pass/Fail acceptance limit asshown in Figure 1. Then re-run the performance test.
