CAMBRIDGE RIVERARTS FESTIVALrue to its roots of the mid-1970s, theCambridge River Festival has always beenand remains today an exuberant celebrationof the arts in Cambridge. In the Festival’s early days, a group ofimaginative artists, led by the artist-inresidence at the time, Jeff Mauzy, chargedthemselves with harnessing the energy of theFestival throughout the year. This “Art Army,”as they cleverly called themselves, embarkedupon wonderfully wild “cultural guerilla raids.”They froze plastic toys into giant blocks of ice,and placed them in playgrounds in HarvardSquare for delightful discovery. They paintedmurals on sides of buildings. Mini-concerts,led by bands on top of pick-up trucks, sprung up in the middle of traffic. Missionaccomplished: the city’s public spaces werealive with art all year long!Fast-forward to today.
