Frostburg Elks #470Volume 1 issue 5May 2007Message from the Exalted Ruler:Members and Guests:With summer upon us I would like to remind you that our busiest time of theyear began with Memorial Day weekend. As you all are aware, our purpose, as partof Elkdom, is to raise money for Veterans and Children.Once again our Golf Committee did an outstanding job with the GolfTournament which was held on May 26th. I would like to thank our sponsors,participants, and volunteers. Proceeds from this tournament will be used to sendseveral of our youth to an annual tournament held at Seven Springs during the monthof July. Joey Harris will be representing our Lodge when he competes in the YouthGolf Tournament and I am sure that he will make us all proud.I would also like to thank everyone who gave money towards our VeteransProgram. We were able to raise 500 for Cecil Smith and Sam Mittwede for a tripto Martinsburg on May 31 .stWe will have a Flag Burning Ceremony on June 9th, at 11:00 a.m. All members who have flags that need to beburned, please drop them off at the Lodge.On June 14th, Flag Day, we will once again honor our Flag with a short program which begins at 7:00 p.m. All arewelcome and I hope to see each of you at the Lodge for this patriotic occasion.Derby Day will be here before you know it. Please take the time and sign up a Volunteers. One or two hourincrements is all that we are asking. Contact Art Bond for further information.I am sure that you have noticed the new porch over our side entrance. It looks fantastic. A Big THANK YOU toBonds Home Improvement for donating the labor.On May 21st, we initiated four new members. We need members to grow. Please be active in recruiting newmembers. Our State Convention will be held at the Wisp Resort at Deep Creek Lake. Attend and learn more about Elkdomin Maryland. I would like to thank the House Committee and all those who volunteered to welcome our bus load of visitorsfrom Delaware. OFFICER OF THE MONTHBetsy FeltenSecretaryNext to the Exalted Ruler, the most daunting job in Elkdom is that of the Secretary. The Secretary is responsiblefor taking in all monies for the Lodge and turning it over to the Treasurer. The Secretary is also responsible for attendingall meetings and making a recording of each. The Secretary must open all mail and forward it to the person it should go to.Efficiently maintain the records of the members of the Lodge and proposals of members to our order. Report to the GrandLodge annually of our membership and Lodge Activities. Attendance at the Clinics of the District Deputy. Attendance atthe annual and other required meetings of the State Association. Preparation for the official visit of the District Deputy.The Secretary must have knowledge of the job and be able to maintain a harmonious environment, meet schedules anddeadlines, and respond promptly to communications.Betsy Felten has taken on the responsibilities of Secretary.Betsy Felten is the daughter of Betty Layman and the late Wayne “Rock” Layman. She graduated from Beall HighSchool and has a Bachelor’s Degree from Frostburg State University in Computer Science and a Master’s Degree fromFrostburg State University in Business Administration. Betsy has been a Financial Analyst with Garrett County MemorialHospital for the past twenty years and has served as an active member of the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department forthe past eighteen years.Betsy has been an Elk for the past three years and lives outside Frostburg with her five dogs.Best wishes, Betsy, for a successful year.
