We begin a new Church year and Advent with Jesus commanding us to watchvigilantly for His Christmas coming and His final coming. Chances are that Jesus’message will go largely unheeded in a culture which has generally displaced even thename of His birthday, “Christmas,” with the politically correct “holidays.”Vigilance and waiting come naturally to those in love. The loving father of theprodigal son waited and watched for a long time for his boy’s return. So vigilant was hiswatching that he was able to spot his son “while he was still a long way off.” Simeonloved God and so waited vigilantly in the temple for the appearance of the Infant Jesus. Jesus, who is Love, waited several decades in the obscurity of Nazareth until the right time to begin his public ministry. We’llwait enough for what we love enough. This Advent, some folks will wait hours in line to buy this year’s popular toy. Many children will risewell before dawn on Christmas morning and wait for hours until they can open presents. Parents and childrenwill wait in long lines to visit Santa. Who we wait for says a lot about who we really love. Who will wait forJesus? Who will love Jesus? We will watch and wait for Jesus if we love Him enough. Ask the Holy Spirit topour out the love of God in your heart. Then “wait for the Lord.”Pastor’s announcements:1. Congratulations to our children who experienced the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time onSaturday, December 2nd. “Notes” from Phil & AmyWelcome to Advent atSt. Christopher Parish and a new beginning ofa church year. The church begins with thesemi-continuous reading of the Gospel ofMark in this year. It’s the oldest and shortest of the Gospels.Maybe since we’re off and running with Advent, now might be agood time for a little liturgy insight about this season. Thisseason will move quickly, especially this year because this againis the year when Christmas falls on a Monday. ImmaculateConception is upon us Friday of this week and Christmas VigilMass will occur the evening of the Fourth Sunday of Advent onDecember 24th. The following Sunday, December 31st, is theFeast of the Holy Family and yes, the Solemnity of Mary theMother of God will be celebrated Monday, January 1, 2018.While you’re marking your calendar, here’s a direct quote fromthe 2018 U.S. Bishops’ calendar: “In 2018, since the Solemnityof the Epiphany of the Lord is celebrated on January 7th, theFeast of the Baptism of the Lord is transferred to the followingMonday, January 8th. Back to Advent. What is Advent and what does it mean?Advent begins today. The word “advent” comes fromLatin and means “coming”. The liturgical season of Advent isthe time to prepare for the coming of Christmas – the birth ofJesus. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Thisyear there will be three full weeks in Advent. This is thechurch’s New Year.Advent is a time to remember the thousands of yearspeople waited for the Messiah. It is time to remember Mary asshe waited for the birth of her child. It is a time to rememberSt. John the Baptist who prepared the Jewish people who werewaiting for the coming of the Redeemer. The church vestments are purple, the color of penance.Advent is a time to do penance and prepare our hearts for thecoming of Jesus at Christmas. The music of Advent includessongs with “Emmanuel”, which expresses our longing for Jesus’coming. The Advent wreath with its four candles represents theweeks of Advent. One candle is lighted each week until all fourcandles are lighted on the last Sunday of Advent. Take andmake special time for Advent prayers this year.A Blessed Advent Season to All,Phil & AmyHere’s Friday and Sunday’s Scripture highlights .Immaculate Conception: The Entrance Antiphon: I rejoiceheartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy of my soul. The FirstReading from Genesis 3: Adam and Eve ate from the tree thatthe Lord God forbade. Enmity would rise up between theserpent and the woman. The Responsorial Psalm 98: Sing to theLord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds. The SecondReading from Ephesians 1: Christians received “ every spiritualblessing in the heavens” through Jesus. Through Christ, Godfreely chose and adopted the faithful as children. The GospelAcclamation from Luke 1: Hail, Mary, full of grace the Lord iswith you; blessed are you among women. The Gospel fromLuke: The angel greeted Mary, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord iswith you.” The angel told Mary she would conceive a son by thepower of the Holy Spirit. She answered, “May it be done to meaccording to your word.”(continued)HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING ATST.
