A Chapter of the Jaguar Clubs of North AmericaUnder The BonnetNewsletter of theWMJR on the web:Wasatch MountainJaguar Registerwww.cs.utah.edu/ gary/WMJR/July 2011Member Spotlight: Jim and Hermione KlekasHelen of Troy is said to have had a facethat launched a thousand ships, but Jimand Hermione (named for Helen'sdaughter) appear to be on a program tolaunch a thousand cool sports cars.one are both proudly of Greek descent.Jim's father was born in Magna UT, butspent a career in the Army, which ledthe family to serve tours in Germany,Greece and at many stateside locations.After entering the Army as a privateHermione's introduction to thispassion came through her father,who was a car lover owning aMaserati, a Ferrari, a Porsche,and several Alfa-Romeos.A law was finally passed in 1991which allowed the family to sellthe property for what was bythen, worth much less. (Ed.note: please avoid the subject ofGreek / Turk relations when socializing with the Klekas's).She remembers well as a younggirl riding from Salt Lake Cityto Florida and back in a Ferrari330 coupe in the summer withno AC.Jim and Hermione (pronouncedHer-my-o-ne, like the HarryPotter character) have owned 3Maseratis, including his ‘06Maserati Quattroporte, the purchase of which Hermione endorsed because it had a poppingexhaust sound that reminded herof a car her father owned. Hermioneherself drives a ‘09 Maserati GranTurismo S.Greek living in Turkey as the owner of afurniture company that outfitted embassies and other high end venues. Unfortunately the furniture company wasclosed when the Turks booted theGreeks in 1964, and only allowed themto take 1000 per year out of thecountry.during WWII, Jim's dad retired as a FullColonel with 31 years service.In terms of Jaguars Jim first owned a '63E-type coupe and later a '02 XJS VandenPlas, both sold to the same cousin. Theynow own a red '68 E-type roadster, thebonnet of which was shown on the frontpage of the June issue of this newsletter,and is reproduced on page 2.As it turns out Hermione's mother was afriend of Jim's mother since childhoodin Salt Lake City, and Jim met Hermione's parents in Switzerland, where Hermione’s mother worked at the U.S. Consulate, two years before her parentswere married, and one year before Hermione was born.As their names imply, Jim and Hermi-Hermione’s paternal grandfather was aJim comes from a family of 5 -an oldest brother who is a retireddiplomat living in Spokane, asister who is a Realtor in SanFrancisco and who is only 10 ½months older than Jim and hisidentical twin brother. (Ed. note:we hear a lot about productivitythese days, but how about 3 kidson one year?!?)The twin brother Jeff has been with Zions Bank in Salt Lake City for 39 years.Finally, his youngest sister is a highschool Drama and English teacher inSeattle.Jim has a 29 year old daughter whoteaches math at Hillcrest High School.Jim and Hermione have a charming 8year old son Nicholas who we met at the— cont’d on p. 2

One of 43C-types sold to privateowners, NDU 289 was aproduction car built in1953. It competed in the1953 Mille Miglia drivenby its owner, the Italiandriver Tadini, but retiredduring the race.1956 JAGUAR D-TYPE'LONG NOSE'(Registration 393 RW)This vehicle was the penultimate D-type produced by Jaguar,built in March 1956 for the works racingteam. That year, it won the Reims 12-hour race, driven by Duncan Hamiltonand Ivor Bueb, before encounteringtechnical problems during the 24-hourrace at Le Mans, whereit ultimately finishedsixth (behind the winners Flockhart and Sanderson in another D-typeenteredbyEcurieEcosse). Although Jaguar withdrew from racinglater that year, the vehicle lived on in Americawith the Cunningham/Momo team, and finished third in the 12hour race at Sebring in1957. This vehicle remains one of the mostoriginalD-typesinpreservation, and stillhas the 1956 Le Manswindscreen, passengerseat and door, and even sports the original trade plate registration 393 RW.
