CTR 509-81Back to MarseillesIn the winter of 1815, a shipnamed the Pharaon was returningfrom a journey to Italy. ThePharaon had a small crew.Among the men were CaptainLeClere, Monsieur Danglars, andyoung Edmond Dantes.Dantes was the First Mate ofthe ship. He was only nineteenyears of age. He was a very kindand honest man. Danglars, onthe other hand, was a man thirtyfive years of age. He was very slyand full of envy. Before returning home, thePharaon made an important stopat the Isle of Elba. This was theisland on which France hadbanished Napoleon Bonaparte.Napoleon was once the emperor ofFrance. He had fought and wonmany battles for his country. Butthen he had been driven frompower. The banished Napoleonwas planning on returning toFrance one day. He would takeback his command from KingLouis XVIII.The Pharaon’s crew hadstopped at the Isle of Elba to gethelp for their ill captain. CaptainLeClere had gotten brain feverduring the trip. Edmond Dantestook control of things when theCaptain became ill. He trulycared for the Captain and wantedto help him.On the Island, Napoleon pulledEdmond aside to talk with himprivately. “Would you deliver aletter to an old comrade of mine inMarseilles?” asked Napoleon.Edmond felt uneasy about hisquestion. Doing anything forNapoleon would be a form oftreason. This would makeEdmond a traitor to his country.“It’s just a harmless letter to anold comrade from long ago,” saidNapoleon.Edmond was unsure abouttaking the letter from the oldemperor. After some thought, heagreed to deliver it. Edmond wasno traitor, but he was very young. He was not aware of the problemshe could face if the letter fell intothe wrong hands. He could becharged with treason.“Take this letter to MonsieurNoirtier,” said Napoleon. “He willfind you in Marseilles.”Within hours, Captain LeClerehad died from his brain fever. The crew covered the body. Theyloaded it back onto the Pharaon. Then they sailed back out into theAtlantic Ocean. The crew buriedCaptain LeClere at sea.The next day, the Pharaonsailed into the French harbortown of Marseilles. This waswhere Edmond Dantes lived.Edmond was very excited abouthis return. He was very anxiousto see his father and his fiancée,Mercedes. After docking the ship,Monsieur Morrel, the ship’sowner, approached Dantes andDanglars. “What happened onyour journey?” he asked.Edmond explained. “CaptainLeClere died of brain fever.”Danglars had a sly scowl onhis face as he listened to Edmondtell Morrel about the trip. He feltsuch envy! He didn’t like howwell Dantes got along withMorrel. “Dantes did not obey myorders when he went to the Isle ofElba,” interrupted Danglarsrudely. He continued, “Our livescould have been lost sailing tothat Island. I was trying toprotect the well-being of thePharaon.”Now Monsieur Morrel scowled.“You were trying to protect yourself,” exclaimed Morrel. “Edmonddid the right thing by seekinghelp for the ill Captain. This isthe choice that you should havemade, Danglars.”Danglars glared at Edmondwith envy and dislike.“Both of you come with me,”commanded Morrel. The menfollowed Morrel inside the shippingcompany where they would learnwho would become the nextcaptain of the Pharaon. The twomen sat down in front of Morrel’sdesk. Morrel paused for a fewseconds. He looked at both mensitting in front of him. Finally, hebegan to fill out a piece of paper.“Edmond Dantes, you are a manof courage,” Morrel began.“Because of your concern for yourcaptain, I now make you the newcaptain of the Pharaon.”Withgreatexcitement,Edmond jumped up and shookMorrel’s hand. “Thank you somuch, sir. You have given me mydream. I will not let you down,”he said smiling.“Don’t you have a pretty, younglady waiting to hear this goodnews?” asked Morrel.Edmond smiled. He asked,“May I have two weeks leave so Imay marry Mercedes?”Morrel answered, “That is fine. But, the crew will need you in amonth or so to set sail on the nextjourney. Now, go. Get to yourfiancée and family to share thegood news.”As Danglars listened to theexchange between the two men,he became angry. He felt moreenvy than ever before. He askedMorrel, “Have you demoted me?”“No, I have not demoted you,”answered Morrel. “You will be thePharaon’s First Mate. If thismakes you unhappy, you mayseek work somewhere else.”Danglars glared at Morrel. Then he left the office withoutsaying a word. It appeared thatDanglars was finished with hisjob at the shipping company.9
