About the Department of MusicMusic ScholarshipsFully accredited by the National Association of Schools ofMusic, the Lander University Department of Music offersa comprehensive program of music study designed topromote musical literacy and artistry.Lander’s Department of Music offers scholarships tofreshmen and transfer students who wish to pursuea degree program as music majors. Prospective majorsmust audition before the music faculty to demonstrateperforming abilities and musical potential, as well asknowledge of music fundamentals.Conceived within the tradition of a liberal arts education,the Bachelor of Science degree in music (instrumental,keyboard and vocal) combines a strong music componentwith a broad menu of elective courses, while the Bachelorof Science in music, K-12 teacher certification (choral,instrumental and keyboard) curriculum prepares studentsfor the organization and administration of public andprivate school music programs.Music students receive one-on-one studio instruction andare afforded valuable performing opportunities with theBrass, Guitar, Keyboard, Percussion, String and Woodwindensembles; Jazz Combo, the University and Old MainSingers, Opera Workshop, the Lander Chamber Strings, theLander Jazz Ensemble, and the Lander Wind Ensemble.At Lander University, you will find teachers, performers,parents, doctors, politicians, lawyers, music ministers,conductors, composers, recording artists, retailers,rockers, master’s and doctoral students, and many moreamong those who have passed through our studio andclassroom doors.Ranging from 500 to 2,500 per academic year, musicscholarships are awarded to students in these appliedareas: baritone horn/euphonium bassoon clarinet flute French horn guitar oboe organ percussion piano saxophone strings trombone trumpet tuba voiceA limited number of scholarships are available each year tomusic minors and to ensemble participants. The BrooksideHousing Grant (up to 3,000 per year) is open, while fundsare available, to qualifying musicians who perform in theLander University Pep Band, the Lander University Singersand the Lander University Wind Ensemble. Application and Audition RegistrationOpportunity for InstrumentalistsApplication for admission to Lander University maybe made online at www.lander.edu/admissions or bycontacting the Office of Admissions at 864-388-8307.High school instrumentalists from Abbeville, Clinton,Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Ninety Six, Saluda andsurrounding areas who are nominated by their banddirectors are invited to participate in Lander University’sAll Lakelands Honor Band in November of 2021. Chairauditions, sectionals, rehearsals and a final concert willtake place in the Abney Cultural Center. The two-day eventwill provide an opportunity to visit campus and interactwith music faculty and students. Musiciansmay also be required to execute scales and sight read.A university accompanist will be available.
