James MeysenburgDear Parents & Friends,With great pride, I watched the three hundred twelve graduates receivetheir diplomas from His Excellency, Bishop James D Conley, on Sunday, May20th. When I was signing their diplomas, it was a “meditation of thanksgiving” as I considered their struggles, accomplishments, and journeys ofgrowth. They are talented, giving, caring young adults. In a most wonderfulway, their journeys are just beginning. Let us all continue to keep them andall our students and families in our prayers and Masses. As we say goodbye to our senior class, we also bid farewell to severalteachers and staff. Retiring this year are Jerry Bartek (43 yrs.), Sheila Mehlhaff (40 yrs.), Karen Buckley (30 yrs.), Deb Schulte (20 yrs.) and Tini Van-Oehlertz (10 yrs.). I cannot begin to thank these wonderful people enough for their contributions, care andconcern for students and fellow staff during their careers at Pius X. They have been faithful leaders andenhanced Pius X High School in countless ways.Monsignor John Perkinton, a 1975 Pius X graduate, is also leaving his post as the diocesan superintendent of schools for the last 28 years. Monsignor has been an incredible leader, mentor, boss andfriend for me and many others. He has helped to keep the ship of Catholic education steered in the rightdirection and driven with the right mission.Other teachers and staff who are leaving Pius X include: Claire Babl, Levi Baus, Chara Eckery,Chad Houk, Father Ryan Kaup, Kim Lepper, Molly Milana, Greg Sederberg Kate Sirota, Father AdamSparling, and Adelle Stiles. I am so grateful to all these wonderful witnesses of Christ’s love. May Godrichly bless each of them in future endeavors! An event that yearly enhances our ability to provide quality instruction is BOLT, Building Outstanding Leaders Today. “Champagne and Bubbles” was this year’s theme; it was an evening to celebratePius X High School and to support plans for constant improvement. As always, it was a fulfilling andsuccessful event. Net proceeds of 278,000 were realized and will be used towards the new furnitureand equipment for the classrooms in the new addition. Part of the proceeds will also be used to help thebooster club to pay for the track and tennis courts to be re-surfaced and for Flavin gymnasium to get itsten-year re-sanding, re-painting and re-finishing. This work is scheduled for this summer.Thank you to Deb Schulte in her 20th and retiring year as executive director of BOLT and the BOLTexecutive committee for their leadership. Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers and donors who stepup each year to make this event incredibly enjoyable and successful. The enthusiasm for Pius’ continuedsuccess was clearly displayed and very gratifying on the evening of BOLT.Another very exciting project that has just begun is the new classroom addition to Pius X, theMonsignor James D. Dawson Learning Center. This project has been years in the planning, and it isgratifying to see it commence. Monsignor Ivan F. Vap was the first industrial arts teacher and on theoriginal faculty of Pius X. Following that, he was the Superintendent of Pius X for 18 years, from 19631981. The new Industrial Arts Center, housed within the James D. Dawson Learning Center, will benamed in grateful remembrance of him. I am very excited to honor these two wonderful priests – thesetwo giants of Catholic education in our diocese. It was fun having them there along with Bishop Conleyand Monsignor John Perkinton at our ceremonial groundbreaking.During the construction phase, there will be inconveniences. I ask for your patience during thenext 15 months. I pray that you have a grace-filled, joyful summer with family-time, relaxation and rejuvenation!Sincerely Yours in Christ,Father Jim MeysenburgRestore All Things In Christ Pius X Catholic High School 6000 A Street Lincoln, NE 68510 (402) 488-0931 www.piusx.net
