introductionSocial recruiting on the rise:Employers will invest more in recruitingacross multiple social networks ascompetition for talent intensifiesWhen we began this annual survey four years ago, social recruiting was a new idea to manycompanies. Between then and now, comScorereports that time spent in social networks grewfrom 1 out of every 12 minutes spent online to 1 inout every 6 minutes. Employers have clearlyfollowed their target talent into social networks. Our2011 survey found that 89% of respondents willrecruit through social media this year, up from 83%in 2010.As competition for talent grows, social recruitingtops the list two years running as the most populararea to increase investment. Not surprisingly, respondents’ plans to increase spending oncandidate sources are closely aligned with theirviews on the quality of those sources. 55% will increase their budgets for socialrecruiting; referrals, corporate career sitesand direct sourcing are other top categoriesfor increased investment. Referrals, direct sourcing and social networksare the top rated external sources for qualitycandidates.2 Only 16% will spend more on job boards anda third of respondents plan to spend less onjob boards, third party recruiters and searchfirms. The data indicates that recruiting departments, likemarketing departments, increasingly utilize theunique environments of multiple networks to reachand engage their targets. LinkedIn has led in recruiting usage eachyear and now almost all of those surveyed(87%) use the professional network, up from78% last year. Recruiting usage of other major networksstayed fairly steady with 55% using Facebookand 47% using Twitter. But now, most (64%) have expanded theirsocial recruiting programs to two or moresocial media channels; and 40% use all threetop networks – LinkedIn, Facebook andTwitter.Proof of a continued recovery for the labor market,67% of survey respondents said they plan toincrease hiring over the next 12 months, up from56% in 2010. And they indicate that socialrecruiting will be an essential element of recruitingstrategy as hiring competition heats up. 77% of survey respondents expect increasedcompetition for talent. Nearly 2/3 of companies intend to recruitfrom competitors in the year ahead. 1/3 expect the average new employee tostay 2 years or less Among companies anticipating increasedhiring this year, 95% now use or plan to startusing social recruiting.Fortunately, the connections, data and reachoffered by social networks can help employerssuccessfully adapt to this environment of highchurn and increasing competition for talent – anenvironment in which they must always berecruiting.
