Each division develops and maintains technical standards for its products and actively promotes their use by design professionals. The Metal Bar Grating Division of NAAMM publishes the only manuals for standard and heavy duty gratings which are recognized by ANSI, the American NationalStandards Institute. These ANSI/NAAMM standards are your guide in assuring that your grating needs are satisfied by products of consistent quality and availability.Grating Pacific, an active NAAMM member in good standing, designs, manufactures and fabricates bar grating in strict accordance with published NAAMM standards.Supporting engineering documentation is available upon request.Tracy, CA (800) 491-7999 Woodburn, OR (800) 942-4041 Kent, WA (800) 243-3939 www.gratingpacific.com1

IntroductionMetal Bar Gratingis the workhorse of the industrial flooring market and has served industry for decades. Strong and durable withan exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, metal bar grating can be easily fabricated to nearly any configuration. The high percentage of open area makesbar grating practically maintenance-free and all products are fully recyclable.Manufactured by assembling a series of equally spaced metal bars to connectingcross members, bar grating is available in three popular materials; mildcarbon steel, 6000 series aluminum, and 300 series stainlesssteels. Additionally, Grating Pacific has the capacityto produce gratings constructed with otherspecialty metal alloys.ar s.nt.ng bainrepaseSBar n elem ars of the bBing ing mainrositaisB e d c ar r yC r o ur e s p o scL oaeSdthCross BarSpacingBearing Bar SpacingMeasured from center-tocenter of the bearing bars in1/16" increments. Product SpecificationService LoadsThe load tables on the pages within this catalog provide load/deflection criteria for most common applications. These tablesprovide a concise reference allowing the specifying authorityto select the appropriate bearing bar size and spacing for theintended application.W idthSp a nPedestrian loads are commonly analyzed with uniform andconcentrated loads. For pedestrian comfort, deflection is typicallylimited to 1/4".Heavy duty and vehicular load tables are presented for specificload conditions. Heavy duty load tables are presented withdeflection limited to the lesser of 1/8" or L/400.UnIf your application is not addressed by the load tables found in thiscatalog, please contact Grating Pacific for assistance selecting theproduct most appropriate for your application.s upp orte dSp anSpecification CriteriaWhen specifying metal bar grating it is important to considerthe following factors: Service load required and acceptable deflection Unsupported clear span Flooring surface Banding and trim FinishSurface OptionsBandingThe open ends of the grating may be banded to provide additionaltransverse stiffness and a finished architectural appearance.Achieved by welding a flat bar, similar in size to the bearing bars,to the cut end, banding enhances safety and should always bespecified when gratings are designed to be removable.Plain SurfaceStandard surface withexcellent “self-cleaning”characteristics. Suitable formost applications.Serrated SurfacePreferred for applicationswhere moisture or fluidscause the walking surfaceto become wet and slippery.Algrip SurfaceDurable slip-resistantdeposits on the walkingsurface provide enhancedslip-resistance forapplications in the publicway (see page 34).Banding can reduce impact stress by transferring load to adjacentbearing bars and should always be specified when gratings aresubject to vehicular loads. Further banding descriptions anddetails may be found on page 58.FinishesSteel products are commonly provided with one of three finishes: bare steel (no finish);painted with one coat of manufacturers red, black or silver paint; or hot dip galvanized inaccordance with ASTM A-123.Aluminum products are offered mill finish with optional chemical cleaning or anodizingalso available.Stainless Steel products typically require secondary cleaning due to discoloration thatoccurs during welding and fabrication. Commercial cleaning, passivation, or abrasiveblasting can provide a uniform matte surface while electro-polishing leaves a brightstainless finish.Other - All products can be provided with specialty finishes including enamel or epoxyPaintedSteelMill Finished &Anodized Aluminumpaints, or powder coating. Steel Bar GratingSteel Bar GratingSteel bar grating is manufactured from ASTM A-1011 mild carbon steel and is available in three distinct products: type“W” welded bar grating, type “DT” dovetail pressure locked grating, and type “SL” swage locked grating. All threeproducts are available with bearing bar spacing ranging from 19/16" (1-3/16") to 7/16" on center and with crossbars at either 4" or 2" on center. Each product has a standard plain surface or may be specified with optional serrated or Algrip surfaces.Finish options include bare steel, painted, hot dip galvanized, or specialty coatings. The load tables on pages 6-10 provide detailed specification information related to these products.Type “W” Welded Steel GratingOur most economical steel grating products, type “W” welded steel gratings aremanufactured by forge welding rectangular bearing bars and drawn cross bars. This welding process provides a positive fused connection providing years ofservice under the most demanding conditions.Type 19-W-4 steel grating is our most popular product and is recommended fornearly all industrial flooring applications. With nearly 80% open area, 19-W-4allows for the easy passage of dirt, debris, snow, and liquids and is essentiallyself-cleaning.Type11-W-4Type “W” gratings are available in close mesh, ADA conformingspacings 11-W-4 and 7-W-4 which are commonly used in publicareas. When specifying type 11-W-4 for ADAapplications, 3/16" thick bearing barsmust be specified.Type19-W-4WELDED STEELINTERSECTIONType “SL” SwageLocked Steel GratingType “DT” Dovetail PressureLocked Steel GratingType “DT” steel gratings have deep rectangular cross bars and aremanufactured by inserting pre-punchedDOVETAILbearing bars and cross bars into anINTERSECTION“egg-crate” configuration anddeforming the cross bars underintense hydraulic pressure. The deep cross bars on type “DT”gratings make them popular forarchitectural applications such assun shades and infill panels with thedeeper cross bar serving as a distinctarchitectural accent.4Type “SL” steel gratings aremanufactured by insertinghollow tube cross bars intopre-punched holes inthe bearing bars. Thecross bars are thenswaged forming apositive mechanicalconnection. The crossbars are recessed belowthe top surface of the bearingbars providing a uniform and attractivearchitectural appearance.Swage locking is a particularly efficientprocess for the production of closemesh gratings. Type 7-SL-4 with3/16" thick bearing bars provides anet 1/4" clear opening between thebearing bars. This narrow openingis often preferred in public areaswhere concerns of drainage andthe presence of high heeled shoesconverge.SWAGEDINTERSECTIONGRATING PACIFIC Service. Quality. Reliability.
