ALFA GEOTECHSoil InvestigationSoil BoringRotary wash boring will be used in the soildrilling to advance the hole. A drilling bit isattached to the end of the drilling withconstant injection of mud fluid to lift thecuttings from the borehole. By constantrotation of the drilling bit with mud fluidcirculation, the borehole can be advanced torequired depth for other testing, such asSPT and undisturbed sampling. This type ofdrilling is efficient and greater depth ofadvancement can be achieved through thismethod.Standard Penetration Test (SPT)The Standard Penetration test (SPT) will beperformed in the borehole. A split spoonsampler is attached to one end of the drillingrod, and a driving hammer is connected to theupper end of the rod. The weight of thehammer is fixed at 63.5 kg with a drop height of76 cm. At the required testing depth, thesampler is lowered into the hole, followed bydriving through the hammer with fixed dropheight. A total of 45 cm of penetration into soilis required, and the SPT N value is taken asthe number of blow count for the last 30 cm ofpenetration.Disturbed samples will becollected from the split spoon sampler, whichare normally used for physical property testsand soil classification.Undisturbed SamplingUndisturbed sampling will be collected throughthin walled tube (Shelby tube). At requiredsampling depth, the hole is cleaned throughflushing of mud fluid, and the Shelby tube islowered into the hole with attachment to thedrilling rod. Push-in method will be adopted forsample collection. Once the tip of the tubereaches the bottom of the hole, gentle force isapplied at the upper end of the drilling roddownward until sufficient soil sample iscollected within the tube. The tube is thenwithdrawn from the hole, and the rod adaptor isremoved.Any unsuitable material will beremoved from the end of the tube beforewaxing is done to seal the sample.

ALFA GEOTECHField TestingCone Penetration Test (CPT)The CPT consists of a cone tip attached tothe pushing rod with various sensorsmeasuring the cone resistance, sleeve frictionand pore pressure. The measurements areautomatically recorded by a computer withreal time display. Currently, Alfa Geotech isthe only company active in electrical CPTtesting in Thailand.Recent CPT works include Nong SaengPower plant, PTTLNG tank terminal, Akaratailings pond, Wang Noi power plant, LaemChabang port terminal etc.Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT)The Dynamic Cone Penetration Test providesthe stiffness of the soil resistance topenetration. The DCP equipment consists of acone tip attached to the driven rod. An 8 kgrammer is used to drive the cone into theground, and the penetration for each blow isrecorded, providing the soil resistance profile.The data from the DCP can be correlated withthe SPT N value.Soil Resistivity TestThe soil resistivity testing equipmentconsists of a battery as an energy source, amilli-ammeter,apotentiometerandelectrodes. The four-point field electrical soilresistivity method is usually carried out fordetermining the resistivity of the soil and foruse in the control of corrosion of buriedstructures. The test method is compliedwith the ASTM G 57.

ALFA GEOTECHPressuremeter TestThe pressuremeter test is used for determiningthe in-situ modulus of the soil in the ground.The pressuremeter tests had been done inmany large projects, including PTTLNG andsecond Mekong Bridge in Cambodia, fordetermining the modulus of the subsoils.Downhole Seismic TestThe downhole seismic test determines thevelocity of compression (P) and shear (S) seismicwaves at the tested locations. A hammer andwooden plank is used as the source to generatethe shear and compression waves. The seismicsignal is detected by geophones and is recordedby a seismograph. The depth of investigation canbe up to 100 m. The Poisson’s ratio, constrainedand shear modulus can also be determined fromthe measured shear and compression wavevelocities. The test method is performed inaccordance with ASTMD 7400.Field Vane Test (FV)Field vane tests perform on soft to medium stiffclay. The Vane Borer is used to obtain theundrained shear strength of the subsoils. Thetest is usually carried out at 1 m interval in softto medium clay layer until the vane is unable topenetrate into the ground or limit of 70 kPa ofundrained shear strength is reached. Thevane shear test will give the peak and residualvane shear strength of the soft to medium claystratum.

ALFA GEOTECHPile TestingLow Strain Integrity TestThe low strain integrity test determines theintegrity of individual pile by measuring andanalyzing the velocity response of the pileinduced by a handheld hammer applied axially tothe pile head. The low strain integrity tests arecarried out in accordance with ASTMD 5882-95by the Pulse Echo Method.Static Pile Load TestThe static pile load test determining pilebehaviour under vertical compression loading.The static pile load test are carried out inaccordance with ASTM D1143-81.Dynamic Pile Analyzer (PDA) TestThe dynamic pile load test determining theactivated pile capacity which can be dividedto skin friction and toe resistance by signalsare stored and analyzed by the Pile DrivingAnalyzer (PDA). The dynamic pile load test arecarried out in accordance with ASTM D4945.

ALFA GEOTECHCrosshole Sonic Logging TestThe crosshole sonic logging isintroduced for assessing thehomogeneity and integrity of theconcrete between the access tubes inthe bored piles. Cross-hole soniclogging method is adopted to assess theuniformity and relative quality of concreteand to evaluate the effectiveness ofcrack repairs. There are three sets ofCSL equipment using at ALFA.

ALFA GEOTECHInstrument installation and monitoringVibration MonitoringThe vibration monitoring system consists of aportable computer with associated software forrecording, the accelerometers and the transducerconnection box.The system measures theacceleration through a set of accelerometers andrecorded by a portable computer. The vibrationmonitoring method and the effects of vibration onstructures are evaluated in accordance withGerman Institute of Standards DIN 4150-3.Soil Movement Monitoring (Inclinometer)The inclinometer is used to measure theinclination of inclinometer tubes measured at0.5 m interval. The tube can be installed in theground of in any underground concretestructure. From the inclinations along with themeasured intervals, the horizontal movementsof the inclinometer tube could be computed.Horizontal InclinometerThe horizontal inclinometer is used to measurethe inclination of inclinometer tubes measured at0.5 m interval. The horizontal inclinometer canprovide a settlement profile of direct indication hasdeflected. From the inclinations along with themeasured intervals, the horizontal movements ofthe inclinometer tube could be computed.

ALFA GEOTECHSoil Movement Monitoring(Settlement Plate)The settlement plate is used to measure thesettlement of ground using the steel rod withreference to the reference benchmark. Thesettlement of the ground is computed withreference to the initial reading.Piezometer Installation and MonitoringThe vibrating wire piezometer is used with anabsolute pressure range from 0 to 1 MPa formeasuring of the piezometric pressure. Thepiezometer consists of a pressure recordingdevice which is placed on one side into astainless steel casing.Magnetic Extensometer Installation andMonitoringThe Magnetic Extensometer is designed tomeasure settlement or heave of soil layer. Aprobe is lowered inside a guide tube to detectand measure the position of magnetic anchorslocated around the guide tube at variousdepths along the borehole.
