This year’s event was cosponsored by the office of theDean of Inclusive Excellence andthe Center for Gender Equity. This event is made possibleeach year through the supportof Dean McConnell and, in thepast two years, Associate DeanPapadopoulos. Though each yearhas brought new and excitingtopics and a 3-year average of 93people in attendance, this year’sevent was one for the recordbooks. It was a highly anticipatedevent across campus fromthe moment the speaker wasannounced. The 2020distinguishedspeaker wasSarah Klein,an attorney, advocate, andthe first-knownsurvivor ofsexual predatorand disgraced former USAGymnastics team doctor, LarryNassar. PLU and the departmentbenefitted greatly from theprofessional acumen Dr. Hackerleveraged to bring such ahighly respected and soughtafter speaker to campus. Theirfriendship and professionalinteractions were the solereason Sarah chose to speakat this year’s event. Thank you,Dr. Hacker! Sarah shared herpersonal story of survival andactivism and how she foundmeaning and purpose from aDr. Colleen Hacker with Sarah Klein and John Manly.tragic experience to inspire andengage everyone in the roomthat evening. In a Seattle Times articlepublished before the event, Kleinnoted that her goal was to useher vulnerability to “leave everyperson in that audience changedin some way.” Over 215 students, faculty, staff, and communitymembers in attendance wouldmost certainly attest that shereached her goal that evening.A post-event survey completedby 103 randomly selectedstudents in attendancesupported the success of theevent. When asked “how wouldyou rate this event,” on a 5-pointLikert scale (with five being thehighest possible score), students’responded with an average of 4.9and said that it impacted themsignificantly as both a futureprofessional and human being. The following qualitativeresponses speak to students’highlights and takeaways fromthis year’s event:“I was moved by how openSarah was about her wholestory, despite discomfortand seeing how much she ispushing for change.”“Listening to her story mademe realize how much of adifference one person canmake.”“It was most impactfulwhen “[Sarah] said that thememory never goes away buthappiness is still achievableand that she doesn’t blamemen–that 90% are the ‘goodguys.’”continued on page 2PLU Kinesiology 20201

Kinesiology Newsletter I EventsAdapted Physical ActivitySARAH KLINEcontinued from page 1STUDY AWAY CLASS“Sarah’s story andopenness impacted methe most tonight. Sheoffered a valuable andimportant perspectivethat will stick with mefor the rest of my life. Ican apply these lessonsin my relationships andcareer.”“A genuine, real storyabout something awfulthat can be preventedthrough reform. I lovedhow Ms. Klein viewssexual abuse as a humanproblem, not the victims’problem.”Dr. Mann, who createdthe introductory videoto provide context forSarah’s talk and ran theevent behind the scenes, wanted to recognize theentire department for theircontribution to the eventand their encouragementof their own students toattend. She also wanted tospecifically recognize a fewstudents’ contributions. Theevent would not have beenpossible without help from:Hurricane Corliss, MeaganMansfield, Will Reichel, and Katie Shaw. With theutmost professionalismand personal responsibility, these four studentsarrived early to help setup for the event and directnotable alumni to a preevent reception. They alsovolunteered to stay afterthe event to help clean up.Without being asked ordirected, these studentsconsistently noticed smalladjustments that needed tobe made, and they steppedup to the challenge.
