How Our STOP LEAK Products WorkIt starts as a small leak but sooner or later it becomesa major leak. Imagine a simple product that’ll stop theleak and water ingress keep your vessels sailing untilnext planned dry docking.Normally leaks can occur in stern tubes, tunnel thrusters andCPP’s. The usual way of dealing with a leak is expensivecompared to using ABCON MARINE SL (Stop Leak additives).Cause of LeaksFurthermore, once the leak has reached a level where evenour SL can’t stop it, the owner will have no option but to takeit out of service and on dry-dock. Our SL products areavailable in mineral oil and bio degradable base oil.There are several causes of leak such as insufficientlubrication of seals during dry docking, air locks inthruster systems and CPP’s after assembling, oil filmpressed out during stand still, fishing lines pulled intoseals, sand and other impurities damaging seals whenpassing through shallow waters (e.g. harbors andrivers).The ABCON Way – SL (Stop Leak) AdditivesOur specifically designed teflon particles form a barrier in thegap between the rubber seal and shaft surface. This stronglyreduces the leak or stops it all together thereby avoidinguntimely dry-dock or other expensive repairs thus enablingthe vessel to continue sailing until planned dry-dock wherethe problem can be fixed. We recommend that small leaksare dealt with once they are discovered. Not only is it illegalmany places nowadays but it is also cheaper as less ofABCON’s product is needed.Examples – SL Additives Lip seal (Simplex type) systems: SL for ordinaryleakages.Lip seal (Simplex type) systems: SLL for largeleakage.Face seal (Cedervall type): CSL for small and largeleakages.All our products are delivered as a concentrated pastewhich results in a lower product price, lowertransportation prices and it makes it easy to handle.A Real Example. 7.100 DWT Drill Ship, leaking 40 L per 24 hours, status after adding ABCON MARINE STERN TUBE SL:Your product helped us our really good. How Our Maintenance Products WorkOur products are maintenance products. Asconventional lube oil products have their limits wehave designed a product that improves the capabilityof lube oil, under all operating conditions.A Real Example. 16,000 DWT. ferry: In dry dockReynolds Law AppliesμμThruster motor shaft bevel was worn, hardened geartooth surface was compromised and iron content inlube oil was exceeding limits. Supplier could not supplyreplacement shaft immediately so therefore ABCONTHRUSTER was added (40 L total volume). The teflonparticles permanently adhered to surface of gearteeth, provided lubrication which reduced gear frictionand iron levels in lube oil to allowable limits. Noreplacement part ordered until 2011 as the ferrySuperintendent reports: Shaft continues to functionwell and since iron level is still acceptable, classapproved for continued operation.What Does ABCON Teflon Particles Do?Experiments have proven that after using ABCONMARINE there is less metal contact even at lower velocity.Wear metals found in used oil show the degree of nonperformance. Oil analysis show that ABCON additives havebeen proven to reduce the wear metals by 50% and more.Cylinders3
Stern Tubes – Lip Seal & Face SealABCON MARINE STERN-TUBE SL is a stop leak andwater ingress paste, specifically designed for sterntubes. We have a broad assortment of products thatwork with all types of stern tubes. It stops leaks andwater ingress on stern tube seals and other similarsystems where mineral oil based engine oil is used.Lip SealsFunctionIn the case of a smaller leak below 15-20 liters per day, thenthe STERN TUBE SL is the best product to use.The high content of teflon particles produce a kind of teflonseal. The effect is that the leakage is significantly reduced orstopped. Should there be water in the lube oil, the stern tubepaste will provide a substantial safety margin as teflonmaintains its lubrication properties even in water.Larger LeaksIf you have a larger leak than 15-20 liters, then our STERNTUBE SLL is the relevant choice. It has the same properties asSTERN TUBE SL, but with the addition of some larger teflonparticles it has an increased effect against larger leaks.Properties of STERN TUBE SLThe unique properties of our stop leak products are theirabilities to produce a teflon barrier at leak as well as reducingwear and tear. It also protects again corrosion. It isenvironmentally friendly as it reduces leakages.STERN TUBE SL, SLL and CSL can be blended with all types ofmineral lubrication oil. It can be used with all types of sterntube seal materials.Above mentioned products are also available with Biodegradable oil based version. They all comply with 2013 EPAVGP requirements. They are all named with a B (BSL, BSLL,BCSL)Face SealsFor face seals we have our ABCON MARINE-STERN TUBE CSLwhich is designed to stop leaks in small and large Cedervalltype seals.4
ThrusterABCON has Stop Leak products specifically designedfor thrusters as well. We have products that arecompatible with all kinds of thrusters with eithermineral oil or bio degradable oil.If you have a problem with a leak below 0,5 liters per hour or10 liters per day, then the THRUSTER SL is your choice. It canstop leakages from rotating and tunnel thruster units and itcan stop leakages from controllable pitch propeller systemswhere there is a suspicion that the O-rings are worn ordamaged.Larger leaksIf you have a larger leak than 10 liters per day, then ourTHRUSTER SLL is the relevant choice. It has the sameproperties as THRUSTER SL but we have added some largerteflon particles which increases its effect against larger leaks.Properties of THRUSTER Stop LeakFunctionThe high content of teflon produces a kind of a sealing layeron top of the seal. The effect is that the leakage is significantlyreduced or stopped.When SL or SLL is blended with the existing systems oil theblend produces an excellent lubrication, which due to theteflon content, maintains its’ lubricating effect even if thereis some saltwater in the oil.Above mentioned products are available in Bio degradablebase oil. Those products are called THRUSTER BSL andTHRUSTER BSLL. All ABCON Bio based products comply withthe 2013 EPA VGP requirements as environmentallyacceptable.All our THRUSTER Stop Leak products have a hydraulic oil asa base oil. This means that it is compatible with gear oil andhydraulic oil, and can therefore be used on fixed propellersand CPP propeller systems. It produces a teflon barrier at theleaking seal. In addition, it protects the bearings and sealsagainst wear and tear.We also deliver to rotating thrusters, both Azimuth andAzipot.A Real Example from Scandlines. MV Prins Richard. ABCON was used on all the thrusters. After adding ABCONMARINE-THUSTER they could wait 4 years instead of 2 years before changing the Lagersmit lip seals.5

Hydraulic & Transmission ProductsWe have several different products for specific uses.Both stop leak and maintenance products for hydraulicsystems and our TRANSMISSIONABCON MARINE HYDRAULICS SLLeaking hydraulic systems can easily be treated by adding asmall quantity of HYDRAULICS SL to the system.The high content of teflon particles produce a barrier whenthey pass the leaking seal area such as the moving cylinders.The effect is that the leakage is dramatically reduced or evenstopped. A side effect of using teflon is its ability to create acushion effect on mating surfaces in e.g. pumps. It not onlyreduces the wear but also reduces the “period noise” oftenexperienced in hydraulic systems.ABCON MARINE HYDRAULICS HYDRAULICS is a teflon based wear reducing additive. Whenadded to the existing lube oil it reduces the friction betweenmating surfaces especially where there is metal to metalcontact e.g. pumps.The smaller teflon particles impregnate the metal surfaceswhich leads to reduces friction and thus wear.The larger particles, which circulate with the hydraulic oil,create a cushion effect. This in turn will reduce the “periodnoise” caused by minor irregularities from mating surfacessuch as gear teeth surfaces.ABCON MARINE TRANSMISSION The TRANSMISSION product is a gear oil additive fortreatment of gearboxes and transmission systems.TRANSMISSION with teflon offers maximum lubrication andanti-wear protection to the gear and bearing surfaces of alltypes of gears (helical, spur and worm drive).The smaller teflon particles in TRANSMISSION whensubjected to pressure and temperature, impregnate thefriction surfaces thus reducing friction and offering corrosionresistance even during lay-up periods and residual lubricationat start up after lay-up periods. The larger teflon particles,which circulate with the gear lubricant will create a cushionbetween gear surfaces, thereby strongly reducing gearpitting. This cushion effect is also important because itreduces noise caused by minor irregularities of matingsurfaces, which are responsible for the very common “periodnoise”.TRANSMISSION has the benefits of reducing friction andthereby reducing operation temperature, improves extremepressure protection, it reduces friction and thus extentscomponents life, reduces risk of oil leaks and results in aquitter operation.ABCON MARINE TRANSMISSION SLOil spill from gear boxes can be reduced or be eliminated byadding a small quantity TRANSMISSION to existing lube oil.Lube oil often leak from small openings in the gear box suchas where the shafts go out or along the lines where the boxis assembled. Due to the content of special shaped teflonparticles in TRANSMISSION SL the gap will soon be filled anda teflon barrier is established.In addition, the capabilities of TRANSMISSION areapplicable to adding TRANSMISSION SL.The smaller teflon particles in TRANSMISSION range from0,4 to 40 microns.7

Leaking pitch propeller systems can becured by same product, if the system oil used is engine oil.We often see leaking stern tubes shortly after dry docking. Inmost cases it is because of seals which have not beensufficiently greased. After a few turns of the shaft the seal hasproduced so much heat that the surface is damaged.
