A Note from Sofia1982. Dynastywas on TV,E.T. was in themovie theater, and a gallonof gas was91 cents. But something even morelasting and important happened fortyyears ago.The House of Hope congregationstarted The House of Hope ChoirSchool.“Often a single experience will openthe young soul to music for a wholelifetime.”-Zoltan Kodaly, ethnomusicologist andmusic educatorOver its first 40 years, under theguidance of 8 directors, with Orff andvoice instructors, parent and pastoralvolunteers, The Choir School’s missionhas been to give all children a positivesinging and musical experience.Through its commitment to the fine artsand education, the members of HOHhave made it possible for all children inthe Twin Cities to have the opportunityto sing and learn together in this uniquemusic program.Everyone has musical potential as wellas the ability to learn! Children enjoychallenges and delight in masteringnew skills which lead to new goals, newaccomplishments, and new confidence. The Choir School creates a welcomingspace for all children to explore theirindividual voices while working to createbeauty together. Choristers sing ourChristian faith, build friendships that canlast a lifetime, and actively participate inthe HOH community. Choristers growto understand the difference betweensinging for worship and singing forperformance, both excellent, butsingular experiences. And choristerslearn the depths of singing, first byrote, then adding additional layers ofunderstanding through note reading,sight-singing; seeing and hearing thepatterns that make music so powerful.Singing in foreign languages allows thesinger to experience other cultures andtraditions and singing music throughouthistory allows our choristers to travelthrough time.Band and orchestra are terrificexperiences for young musicians, butsinging is something distinct. Thehuman voice is an incredible instrument. We don’t have to buy or rent it, we AREit! We are the instrument, each with asound that is entirely unique. I hope thatnext time you’re in church, you will raiseyour voice to God’s glory while singinga hymn, turn your attention to thesounds of the anthem, and whether it’sa child, grandchild, neighbor, or friend, encourage them to try The House ofHope Choir School this fall. All voices arewelcome here!Throughout this 40th anniversaryseason, the Choir School will be singingfavorite anthems in worship andinviting our alumni from 1982-2022 tojoin us in song and celebration!SofiaTransitional Pastor UpdateFor Equilibrium, a Blessing:Like the joy of the sea coming home to shore,May the relief of laughter rinse through your soul.As the wind loves to call things to dance,May your gravity by lightened by grace.Like the dignity of moonlight restoring the earth,May your thoughts incline with reverence andrespect. As water takes whatever shape it is in,So free may you be about who you become. As silence smiles on the other side of what’s said,May your sense of irony bring perspective. As time remains free of all that it frames,May your mind stay clear of all it names.May your prayer of listening deepen enoughto hear in the depths the laughter of god.We welcome The ReverendDr. Scott Kenefake asour Transitional Pastorbeginning August 1.A native of Kansas City, Rev.Dr. Kenefake is a graduateof the University ofKansas, and the San Francisco TheologicalSeminary, as well as the PittsburghTheological Seminary.Dr. Kenefake has focused his ministry onInterim and Transitional Ministry workand is currently serving First PresbyterianChurch in Bloomington, Indiana asTransitional Senior Pastor.
