Volume 20SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEFebruary 16, 2020Cardinal’s Homily 2020 Annual Catholic AppealDear Friends in Christ, “Come, follow me and heal our world.”We have been listening to the call of Jesus to follow him these pastthree years. Each time we come to understand more fully whatfollowing him means. Today’s Gospel helps us to see that following him means healing ourtroubled and fragile world.Notice how Jesus brings healing precisely where we need it in our lives and relationships. When confronted by anger, he offers peace and right relationships. When tempted to beunfaithful in our commitments, he offers the grace of faithful and life-giving love. And,when we become trapped in self-deception and lies, he liberates us with the truth of hisunconditional love and mercy. His healing gifts of peace, love, mercy and truth are needed now more than ever in ourChurch, our nation, our world, and in our families. We all need Christ’s healing, and whenwe accept it, he empowers us to be his healing presence in our world. Healing others hasalways been the proof of the discipleship we share as a community.Through the Annual Catholic Appeal, we together join Christ in his great work, by helpingparishes and schools in need, supporting programs of faith formation, and those thatpromote justice, peace, and respect for life. But we also reach out to the world, to bringhealing to people who suffer natural disasters, famine, homelessness and war. All of thismakes a difference because it is the work of Christ. As you come forward to receive the Eucharist today, I pray that your act of faith in thepresence of Christ, who died and came back from the dead for us, will inspire you tocontinue his healing mission in our world and in our time. Listen to his voice saying to youin the quiet of your hearts: “Come follow me and heal our world.” Then take up with freshvigor the discipleship that binds us together, knowing that as we generously share theblessings God has given us in the annual appeal, our local church and the world will knowthe healing ministry of Christ. On behalf of all those who benefit from the appeal, I say thanks.Dear Friends of Mary, Mother of Divine Grace, the Annual Catholic Appeal takes place in ourparish and across the Archdiocese of Chicago. The 2020 goal for Mary, Mother of Divine Graceis: 80,905. As you know, when contributions exceed the goal, our parish will receive a rebatefrom the donated funds. Thank you for your participation.-Fr. Marcin SzczypulaPage 3

Early Childhood Education Teacher SpotlightEarlyChildhoodOPEN HOUSEMarch 26th@ 9amHi! My name is Abby Martin! I teach the 3-year old Preschoolprogram here at Divine Providence Catholic School. I have morethan 10 years of experience working with small children. I ammarried and have three boys of my own. My favorite thing to do is watch my boys playbaseball. I recently graduated from NIU and I am working towards my Masters degree in EarlyChildhood Education. I am entering my fifth year working at Divine Providence and I love beinga part of the Early Childhood team!Hi! I am Jaimie Scavelli and I am one of the PK-4 teachers at Divine Providence School. This ismy eighth year teaching at DP. I also have seven years of teaching experience at theWestchester Public School, in which I taught fourth grade. I graduated from Elmhurst Collegewhere I received my BA in Elementary Education. While I taught at the Westchester PublicSchools, I continued my education by getting my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership.I have always wanted to become a teacher. There are many reasons why I love teaching, butthe main reason is the joy you see in a child's face when they learn something new. I loveseeing the progress the children make from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.I have two children that attend DP. I am also a graduate of Divine Providence myself. It's soexciting to send my children and to teach in a school in which I also attended! I am impressedwith the exceptional Catholic education that DP offers and I am proud to be a part of the staff. My name is Kate Brennan and I am the new PK-4 teacher. I was raised in a small suburbnorth of Milwaukee and I have seven siblings. I earned my BA in Art Education (K-12) at UWMilwaukee. I taught art in the Milwaukee Public Schools for 3 years before moving to Illinoisafter marrying my husband. I fell in love with teaching preschool children while working atDominican University's Early Childhood Center. At this age, children learn best when they arehaving fun. Preschool teachers get to create entertaining, engaging and creative classroomsthat promote learning as well as social, cognitive and emotional development. I earned myMaster's Degree in Elementary Education at Dominican University. Our family enjoys visitingthe north woods of Wisconsin, art fairs and many of the farmers' markets in the area. We areparishioners at Ascension in Oak Park where our daughter was baptized and received herFirst Holy Communion and Reconciliation.Hi! I am Mary Powell and I am the Kindergarten teacher at Divine Providence School. This ismy second year teaching. I student taught at Divine Providence in the fall of 2017 in the Pre-Kroom. In the spring, I was the aide in the Kindergarten class! I graduated from DominicanUniversity in River Forest with my degree in Early Childhood Education and Spanish. In addition, I have my certifications in ESL and Bilingual Education. I studied abroad in Spainfor six months and loved learning the language and how to best teach students who haveSpanish as their first or home language. I love teaching! I want to be the teacher that makesthe students super excited to come to school each day! I believe that kindergarteners learnbest by presenting the information through the use of their five senses, hands on activities, and relate it to their reality in a fun and creative way!Visit marymotherofdivinegrace.org for more information about Divine Providence School. To arrange for a personal tour of our diverse school community, call Linda Hawkins at 708-562-3364 ext. 18Registration is now open for the 2020-21 School Year!Page 8
