21 Days of Prayer and FastingCome seek God intensely for 21 days. For the last two years, the people of Christ Fellowship have devoted ourselves to God in aseason of prayer and fasting for 21 days. We have experienced supernatural healings —physically, relationally and spiritually. Many people have been baptized. These 21-day seasonshave been transforming, divine, supernatural, beyond all human expectation. So, as we enter 2021, I invite you to seek God in prayer and fasting from January 11 to 31. In2019 our focus was revival and in 2020 knowing God. Now in 2021 we will focus on joy inChrist. Right in the middle of a pandemic, by faith, we seek to experience and radiate joy inChrist. Imagine joining with our entire church family as we become people of joy in a timewhen so many are feeling the opposite — despair and anxiety. This focus ties directly to our new vision: to reduce loneliness, anxiety and addiction by havingmeaningful conversations where people experience Christ through us. The power to change isChrist. It is in experiencing Christ that people can reduce loneliness, ease anxiety and breakaddictions. For these 21 days in 2021, rather than meeting every night in the worship center as in theprevious two years, we are calling for each of us to engage God individually and with a prayerpartner. You’re also invited to join with others live on the Christ Fellowship Facebook page fora brief, guided prayer time at 7:00 pm every evening. Each week on Monday night, we will hold gatherings for worship and prayer at 7:00 pm(January 11, 18 and 25). Then we will culminate the 21 days on January 31 with a worshipcelebration that evening at 7:00.Over these 21 days, my hope is that you will personally pray and fast to experience joy inChrist that overcomes our chaos. May the Spirit of God move with supernatural power in ourlives, in our church, and in our community. What will God do in your life at the start of this new year, as we seek to experience Christ’sjoy? How will he move in the relationships around you? How will Christ Fellowship shine thejoy of Christ ever brighter in our community?Let’s find out together. As God transforms you to experience joy in Christ, I invite you to emailme at bmiller@cfhome.org so I can celebrate with you. Let’s share the stories of what Goddoes. In Christ’s joy,Bruce,Senior Pastor2

Using the Engage God DailyWe will read central passages on joy in the New Testament supported by key verses in the OldTestament. As we read, study, memorize, and mediate on the Word of God, we will prayerfullyseek to experience joy in Christ, no matter what our circumstances or emotions. Each day the Engage God Daily will guide you to: Pray the theme verse (Romans 15:13) and review that week’s memory verse.Read the passage from the Bible for that day.Pray along the themes present in the passage.Journal what you sense God is saying to you by his Spirit in his WordShare what you are learning with your prayer partnerTheme verse and prayer for each dayRomans 15:13 is the theme verse for this year’s 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting:May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you mayoverflow with hope by the power of the Holy SpiritDefining joyBefore we dive into Day One, it’s important that we understand how the Bible defines joy. Joyis an internal state of gladness that often expresses itself outwardly. It’s more a state of beingthan an emotion. In the Bible joy comes from God as a gift that we embrace in response towho he is, to what he has done, and to what he promises to do. Joy results from a choicemade in the power of the Holy Spirit to rejoice. This definition is a relief to the many people who struggle with mood disorders such asdepression or anxiety. These Christians often experience unnecessary guilt or shame becausethey do not feel happy. And yet, joy is possible, even without any positive emotions.Understanding joy in this way also helps us when we encounter hardships and suffering. Indifficult times, you can choose to trust God and rejoice in him. Mature Christians are not“happy” all the time. Their emotions are not always bright and cheery. Jesus himself wassometimes sad. Right in the middle of difficult trials, joy arises from the settled assurance thatGod is good and great, the quiet confidence that ultimately all is well, and the determinedchoice to rejoice in God.4

PREPARATION WEEKJanuary 4-10Our 21 days of prayer and fasting will officially begin on January 11, so we will use this weekto prepare our hearts. This Sunday’s sermon will focus on John 15-17 as we consider how wecan find joy in God himself. As we prepare for a dedicated time of prayer and fasting, thisweek’s Engage God Daily will feature those chapters. This week’s memory verseI have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. (John15:11)Day ONEBEGINPray to experience joy in Christ through our theme verse:May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you mayoverflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (John15:11)READRead and meditate on John 15-17John 15–17 records Jesus’ final meeting with his disciples in the upper room where theycelebrated the Last Supper together. The disciples are anxious and fearful as they anticipateJesus leaving them. They don’t understand what’s happening or why. And yet, Jesus explainsthat we can experience permanent joy in God regardless of circumstances as we more andmore know him personally in the Word and in prayer.Today, we want to get an overview of the entire passage by reading it in one sitting. Read it inyour own Bible and highlight every use of the word “joy” or “rejoice.” Also notice the big5

ideas and major themes. Look for what you learn about God and listen for what the Spirit issaying to you through his Word.PRAYAs the Spirit leads, let these themes guide you in your prayer today: Praise God the Father that he sent Jesus Christ into the world to save us. Ask God to show you how you should fast during the 21 days, starting next week. Thank the Father and Jesus for sending the Holy Spirit, our advocate, comforter, andteacher. How is Jesus like the vine, and how are we like branches? Meditate on thisimage and ask God to reveal its meaning to you.John 15:1–17“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bearsno fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I alsoremain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can youbear fruit unless you remain in me.“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear muchfruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch57

that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be donefor you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be mydisciples.“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep mycommands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remainin his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may becomplete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has noone than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what Icommand. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’sbusiness. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I havemade known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that youmight go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name theFather will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.9Go back and focus on John 15:11. I didnot tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him whosent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with griefbecause I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am goingaway. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness andjudgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because Iam going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because theprince of this world now stands condemned.“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit oftruth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speakonly what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it isfrom me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Fatheris mine. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.( John15:11)READRead and meditate on this passage today: John 16:16-33.Look for what you learn about God and listen for what the Spirit is saying to you through theWord of God. Notice what Jesus says about grief turning into joy? How is the comparison to apregnant woman giving birth helpful?John 16:16–33Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little whileyou will see me.”16At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a littlewhile you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I amgoing to the Father’?” 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’tunderstand what he is saying.”17Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking oneanother what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after alittle while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the worldrejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child haspain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish becauseof her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I willsee you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In that day you will nolonger ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in myname. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, andyour joy will be complete.19“Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use thiskind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in myname. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself lovesyou because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from theFather and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”25Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone askyou questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”293012

“Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when youwill be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, formy Father is with me.31“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will havetrouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”33How secure is your joy in Christ? (John15:11)READRead and meditate on this passage today: John 17:1-26This is Jesus’ prayer for us, his followers. It’s an amazing window into Jesus’ relationship withthe Father. Notice what Jesus prays for you and me. What seem to be the major concerns onhis mind?John 17:1–26After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you grantedhim authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.3Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you14

have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 Andnow, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; yougave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you havegiven me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray forthem. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 AllI have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I willremain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. HolyFather, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may beone as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by thatname you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so thatScripture would be fulfilled.6“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they mayhave the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world hashated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is notthat you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They arenot of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 Asyou sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, thatthey too may be truly sanctified.13“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through theirmessage, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. Maythey also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given themthe glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me andhave loved them even as you have loved me.20“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, theglory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.24“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know thatyou have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known inorder that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”25Take special note of verse 13.
