SUPPLYING STUDENTS IN NEEDTeachers often spend as much as 500 of their own money buyingsupplies for their students and materials for their classrooms.Families throughout the county are struggling to provide thebasics, meaning many times their household budgets do not coverbackpacks and school supplies. Tools 4 Seminole Schools (T4SS)operates a store that collects and distributes school supplies andclassroom materials to help alleviate this burden from teachersand low-income parents. The store has everything from pencils, crayons, notebooks, to socks and underwear. Our goal is to ensureall students have the supplies needed to be in school ready tolearn. The store opened in 2010 and over the years, it has grown tomeet the growing needs of Seminole County students. During the2019-2020 school year, T4SS distributed 1.3 million worth of“This is such an amazing and wonderfulprogram. The materials that we aregiven help so many students. It is sonice that students are able to have thesupplies when needed. The books areso wonderful for so many kids! Theylove them!”-SCPS Teacherschool supplies to support all schoolsin Seminole County, including over200,000 pencils and almost 15,000books. T4SS also distributed 3,500backpacks filled with school suppliesto high-need students to help themstart the school year strong.TAKE STOCK IN CHILDRENScholarships, mentors and hope – this is the Take Stock in Children promise todeserving, low-income students seeking an educational pathway to a better future.Take Stock provides a multi-year program model for high school students thatincludes mentorship, a college success coach, college readiness skills training, andworkshops. In addition to the support of a caring mentor and college preparation, students are awarded a 2-Year Florida Prepaid Scholarship upon high schoolgraduation. Having this support system is important as many of our scholars arethe first in their family to attend college. We are proud that Seminole County has a100% high school graduation rate for students completing the Take Stock program.During the 2019-2020 school year, Take Stock graduated 21 scholars, while servingand supporting 99 students and 93 volunteer mentors. One of the key success factors of the program is the mentoring. Each student meets30 minutes a week with a volunteer mentor. Student Jonathan Alcantara-Ordonez’life changed when he was selected as a Take Stock scholar in 8th grade. Despite thechallenges of changing high schools and being a first-generation college student,he successfully graduated from Lake Mary High School and will study ComputerScience at Seminole State College. Jonathan shared the impact of Take Stock andhis mentor Boe Marshall. “Boe has been there guiding me. We meet up everyweek. He makes sure that I’m on the right path in my personal life and school life. Icouldn’t have a better mentor throughout my high-school journey.”Thanks to the generous support of Foundation donors and volunteers, Take Stockin Children continues to make a difference in the lives of deserving students withscholarships, mentors and hope!THE FOUNDATION OF SEMINOLE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2019 - 2020 ANNUAL REPORT 4

Providing Essentials During COVID-19RESPONDING TO URGENT NEEDSWhen COVID-19 hit Central Florida, studentsstruggled to get access to basic essentials. Theschool district has over 1,500 homeless studentsand 30,000 students in low-income households. These working families felt the burden of theeconomic slowdown as many of the parents losttheir jobs. The Foundation put out a call for help, and our community answered by donating over 165,000 to provide food, hygiene items, andessential school supplies to students in need.Over 250 individuals donated, and every amounthelped students, whether it was a 10 individualdonation or one of our corporate partners whodonated 25,000.The donations provided weekend food bags sostudents could focus on their education, insteadof where their next meal was coming from. Thedonations allowed over 700 at-home learningtoolkits to be distributed to students to supportdistance learning. They provided internet accessto 100 families who would otherwise havestruggled to connect to online platforms. Thecommunity support provided much neededrelief to students to allow them to focus on theireducation and finish the 2019-2020 school yearstrong. One such student had to overcome manyhardships to reach their current place. Thisstudent was an unaccompanied homeless senior.Throughout this student’s 12th grade year, theyresided in their vehicle, working at least 30 hoursa week to make ends meet. This student wasdirectly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic astheir workplace was closed for over eight weeks, severely limiting their income. The student wasable to receive support in form of gas assistance,non-perishable food, and hygiene items. Thisstudent remained dedicated to their academics, ensuring that assignments were submitted, andcommunication with teachers continued. Eventhrough the difficulties this student has faced, they graduated high school and plan to registerfor college classes.THE FOUNDATION OF SEMINOLE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2019 - 2020 ANNUAL REPORT 5
