VOLUME 19 NUMBER 1 SUMMER 2015THEFALCONERSchool news, information and eventsOne school year ends and another begins almost seamlessly each year. We reflect on the closingyear and relish the accomplishments of students, teachers, parents and volunteers. Shifting gears,we look forward, strategically planning for the year to come. Our mission remains constant. We are dedicated to providing learning opportunities for students thatlearn differently, allowing them to gain skills and confidence. While that mission is constant, strategiesand techniques evolve and change. Next school year will focus on three important instructional areas.Enhancing the overall literacy of every student across the curriculum will be stressed. Literacy instructionintertwines reading, writing and speaking. Our own Dr. Kirkland will be leaving the library so that she canfully devote her time and talents to that endeavor. She will be working with teachers to maximize their skills and to provide anyadditional curriculum support that might be needed. She will also have the opportunity to develop additional literary programsthat will have a direct impact on student learning.Twenty-first century learning will also continue to be a focus. New lap top computers will be available in both lower schoollanguage arts classrooms and there will be a mobile computer lab that will transform any classroom into a computer lab.STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) skills will be emphasized in a variety of ways. The upper school computerlab will be updated to accommodate the needs of upper level computer skills. The middle school science classroom is beingexpanded to allow additional space for even more hands on learning. In addition, robotics instruction will be availablewithin the science curriculum, beginning in the upper grades. As we continue to stress college preparatory curriculum across all grade levels, we are expanding our college counselingservices. The upper school students will be using Naviance for High School. This is a web based program that providesa variety of components that assist students and parents in preparing for college, including interests inventories, high schoolcourse planning, college testing and parent information. In addition to the Naviance program, we are also hiring a collegecounselor that will be available to provide individual guidance to high school students and their parents.Enjoy your summer. Know that we are busy preparing for a new and exciting school year. Just thinking about whatwe are planning for next year, makes me anxious to begin!Carla Stanford, M.Ed. – Executive DirectorHIGHLIGHTSIN THIS ISSUE:PAGES 2-3Senior Class 2015!PAGES 8-9Learning On The RoadPAGES 14-15What A Great Year!Fairhill School and Diagnostic Assessment Center 16150 Preston Road Dallas, Texas 75248 Phone 972.233.1026 Fax 972.233.8205 www.fairhill.org

LEARNING ON THE ROADSpring semester at Fairhill means it’s time to get out of the classroom and explorethe possibilities of the outside world. Student learning improves when they canphysically experience the topic. This spring, there were three major overnight trips:5th and 6thgraders:This group traveled to Marble Falls inthe Texas Hill Country in late April. In spite of all of the rain in Texas thisspring, the weather on this trip waspleasant and ideal for spending timelearning in the outdoors. Studentsworked through a specific nature studycurriculum and experienced naturefirst hand. For many of these students, this was an opportunity for individualgrowth. Students learned to managebeing away from home and to adjustto new routines and surroundings. They even learned how to supportone another as team members inchallenging situations such as crossingthe high rope and petting a snake.pleted his assignmentThomas Munson com85th graders took a break in the shade.roundings.while enjoying his surAustin Elsherbini received cheersstudents, Bfrom fellowradon Maxson and Nathan Kulhman.

IN & AROUND FAIRHILLT-Shirt DesignContestOscar Valdez, 6th grader at Fairhill, was the first place winner in thestudent design contest for Fairhill’sSpirit t-shirts. He earned a 50 giftcard for creating the winning design.Percussion is Not Just DrumsMrs. Lynn Firmin, 7th grade Science teacher, has been leadingan after school percussion class for the last seven years. She calls the group “Not Just Drums” because she wantedstudents to know that percussion encompasses all instrumentsthat are sounded by being struck or scraped. But really,“Not Just Drums” is a lot more than music! While Mrs. Firmin writes the music and the students learnto play their instruments, there is so much more that ishappening inside the group. Students learn about discipline,self-control, and how to focus on the directions provided by theinstructor. Students also learn to set goals, be patient, be kindto newcomers to the group, leadership, as well as how to becomposed when mistakes are made and how to just keep going. In May, Not Just Drums competed at the Sandy Lake BandFun Fest. The group was rewarded for their hard workand dedication by winning a First Division ranking andOutstanding Drumline award. According to Mrs. Firmin, the group also learned that “it’s fun to win!”Mrs. Finnell, Fairhill art teacher, and her committee selected threedesigns from all of the studententries. Those three designs wereposted to Facebook where FairhillFans voted on their favorite by “liking” the photos.
