Distance Education alumni and currentgraduate student Sarah Radel and currentDistance Education student Marlene Perrin,were 2 of 13 students and 2 faculty membersthat undertook a trip to Bethune-CookmanUniversity, Daytona Beach for Spring Break.At Bethune-Cookman, students interactedwith graduate students Prof. Hyun Jung Cho(Professor, Department of IntegratedEnvironmental Science), and the Dean (Dr.Herbert Thompson, Dean of the College ofNatural and Health Sciences, Engineering, andMathematics and Provost (Dr. William Berry) ofBCU. The students and faculty took anenvironmental education trip down the Halifaxriver to get a better understanding of thecoastal environment and ecosystem ofDaytona, the intercostal waterway andsurrounding areas.The students learned about numerous birdspecies including egrets, gulls, herons to namejust a few and had up close interactions withthe bottlenose dolphins that inhabit theriver. As the tour traveled south, the studentslearned about the changing coastaltopography and landscape around De LeonInlet and that hazards it presents. Finally,students discussed the economic impact andsocial geography of the river and the area,discussing the amount of tourist the area bringsto the region. As the tour concluded the boattraveled on the intercostal waterway of NewSmyrna Beach, the students learned how thecoastal terrain, ecology and social geographyinterconnect to make New Smyrna Beach theshark bite capital of the United States.
