The family was so impressed bythe care that Annette received during her hospitalization at Cary inthe mid-1980’s, that they established a scholarship in her memorythat is awarded annually to a Cary Medical Center nurse furtheringhis/her education in the nursing field.Receiving the 2014 Scholarship Award of 750.00 is Kelsey King,RN, BSN, of Caribou. C A R YC L A S S I CG O L FT O U R N A M E N TSun Shines on Cary ClassicMore than 70 Golfers Play in 32nd Annual EventA bright sun and warm temperatures delighted morethan 70 golfers from across Aroostook County andbeyond who turned out for the 32nd Annual Cary ClassicBenefit Golf Tournament sponsored in part by theKatahdin Trust Company. Proceeds from the event willbenefit the new Jefferson Cary Cancer Center on thecampus of Cary Medical Center. The tournament whichfeatured four men’s and two ladies divisions featuredsome 8,000 in prizes. Randy Hebert of South Carolina,a former tournament champion, won the overallchampionship with a 36-Hole gross score of 146.Another former ladies champion Betty Devoe won theoverall women’s championship with a score of 165. Mary Harrigan, Executive Director of the Jefferson Cary Foundation said this year’s tournamentfeatured some new faces and a festive atmosphere. “The Cary Classic has really become a tradition here in the County”, said Harrigan whocoordinates the event for the foundation. “We enjoy seeing players who have been here nearly every year and it was great this year to see a lot of newfaces. Having the number of golfers we did along with the generous sponsorship of the Katahdin Trust Company, our hole sponsors, and othercontributors has turned the tournament into our largest fund raising event.”Jeff Jose with the Caribou Country Club said that weather is always a factor and he said the course was in peak condition. “We had a lot ofcomments from players on the quality of the conditions out there on the course”, said Jose who is also a former tournament champion. “It was abeautiful weekend with a nice breeze and we had some good scores. Our country club crew along with our tournament committee did anotheroutstanding job.”The tournament featured the Aroostook Junior Champion for the first time this year. Hunter Flynn a junior player from Presque Isle High Schoolwon the championship. “This was a great tournament and a lot of fun. It was good to play with some experienced golfers and gain from theirknowledge. Everyone was really nice to me and welcomed me to the course. I couldn’t have played with nicer people”.Peter Doebener, President of the Caribou Country Club Board of Directors, said that the tournament was one of the finest he can remember. “Thisyear’s tournament really had it all”, said Doebener who played in the event and took second low net in division four. “We had great weather, greatcourse conditions, and great competitive play. This tournament has had a great history and I would have to mark this one down as one of our finest.Knowing that funds raised by the tournament will benefit people with cancer and the new Jefferson Cary Cancer Center also added to the value of thetournament.”The Jefferson Cary Foundation establishes a tournament committee that begins meeting in February to plan the event. The event will be playednext year on July 9 and 10 with a free practice round on Friday, July 8.5

Cancer Center Renovation UnderwayWith the retirement of Dr. Rohe after more than 35 years caring for Cancer patients throughout theCounty, Cary was fortunate to recruit two full-time Board Certified Hematologist Oncologists, Dr.Allan Espinosa and Dr. Nadia Rajack.The new Jefferson Cary Cancer Center was established in 2014 and our volume of patientscontinues to grow. For this reason Cary Medical Center has launched a new project to renovate theformer, ‘Building for Oncology and Specialty Services’ on the hospital campus. When completed thecenter will be fully dedicated to our expanding Cancer Service.A nonprofit 501(c)3 fund raisingorganization created for thepurpose of improving health care inAroostook County.The Jefferson Cary Foundation is now directing a fund raising effort to help with the costs of therenovations.Individuals, organizations or businesses that would like to learn more about the effort are invitedto call Mary Harrigan, Executive Director of the Jefferson Cary Foundation at 493-4849.
