n r HE custom of wearing academic gowns, caps, and hoods dates back to about thetwelfth century. In France, where the de gree system probably had its inception, thewearing of cap and gown marked the formaladmission of the licentiate to the body of themasters. During this period the dress ofthe friars and nuns became fixed, and sincethe scholars were usually clerics, their robesdiffered little from those worn by otherchurch orders. Gradually special forms wereset aside for the university bodies, and inmodified style are the costumes worn to day. Since academic custom in this matterhad become somewhat confused, in 1895, acommission representative of the leadingcolleges met and prepared a code which hasbeen adopted by over seven hundred insti tutions in the United States and Canada. Acommittee of the American Council on Edu cation revised the code in 1932.Doctors wear the round, bell sleeve; thegown is faced down the front and barred onthe sleeves with black velvet or velvet ofcolor indicating the degree; the doctor’s hoodis large. Masters wear the long, closedsleeve, with a slit near the upper part forthe arm ; the master’s hood is of more mod erate size. Bachelors wear the long, pointedsleeve. Hoods are lined with the colors ofthe institution granting the degree, and aretrimmed with velvet of the color distinctiveof the major subject—for example, arts andletters, white; theology, scarlet; law, purple;philosophy, dark blue; science, golden yel low ; fine arts, brown; medicine, green;music, pink; commerce, d rab; physical edu cation, sage green; engineering, orange;pharmacy, olive green; forestry, russet;library science, lemon; education, light blue;humanities, crimson; economics, copper; ag riculture, maize; dentistry, lila c; oratory, silver gra y; public health, salmon pink; vet erinary science, gray. The Oxford or mor tarboard cap, worn for each degree, is ofblack cloth with black tassel, except that thedoctor’s cap may be of velvet with tassel ofgold. Unless local custom decrees otherwise, tassels are worn over the left temple.
