It covers everyconceivable aspect of physicalsecurity. The bookhas well over amillion words andaround 550photographs andillustrations. It would beunfair to simplysay that this bookis great withoutmentioning what iscovered. Below isa list of how thebook is laid outand what type ofinformation isincluded.1. Locks, Safes and Security is a 1400 page work of artthat covers every conceivable aspect of physicalsecurity. To start with, thebook is dividedinto four parts. They are:2. Methods of entry.3. I would haveto disagree.2. This is an example of some of the photographsin the book.F o r e n s i cinvestigation, forexample, is somethingthat most of us willnever deal with. However, to know that it is possibleand to what extent results can beexpected, may be of great value to oneof your customers some day. If youhave a customer in need and you letthat customer know that these thingscan be done, they won’t forget you.As mentioned earlier, there areapproximately 550 illustrations andphotos in the book. Photograph 2, is anexample of the photographs in thebook. Here we have an Ikonconventional pin tumbler key with amicroprocessor in the bow, along witha Medeco system and two Smart Keys.Photograph 3, shows an explodeddrawing of a Winfield hotel lock and apicture of the face of the lock. This is a10 wafer lock that can be instantlyrekeyed by using a control key. TheWinfield Lock Company receivedthree patents (4069694, 4966021,4376382) for this new lock in 1978.An ABA Axial Lock is shown in adetailed drawing. (See photograph 4.)This is an imported Taiwan lock thatactually has a high degree ofresistance to picking due to a keywayplug that pivots after the key isinserted.Chapter 30 on impressioning is 64pages long. It could be a book in itsself. It covers everything from basicimpressioning, to the use of compositeblanks, foil impressioning, plasticinesystems and a new conductivematerial impressioning system whichTobias received a patent for in 1994.Reprinted from The National Locksmith September 2001

A text search will search the text ofthe book and/or the database to findthings that match your request. Ityped in “axial” and I got 179 hits. Theones that are in the book areidentified, and display the chapter andsection. The word “wafer” returned267 hits. Like the index search, thetext search will give you around 300words of information as well asphotographs and drawings.4. An ABA Axial lock is shown in a detailed drawing.I have tried to give you an idea ofthe depth of information in this bookby listing the contents and throwing afew of the drawings and photographsyour direction. There are so manydifferent areas to cover that there isno possible way that I can do the bookjustice in only a few pages. The cost for Locks, Safes andSecurity is 199.95 and is onlyavailable in hard cover. All of thisinformation will be available on CDRom sometime during the fourthquarter of this year. However, to getthe CD-Rom, you have to buy thebook. By the way, this monsterweighs in at 7 pounds 14 ounces.About the same as a healthy baby. There is one advantage to the bookover the baby. The book doesn’t drooland when you bring it home it willnever cost you another dime!Locks, Safes and Security isavailable from two different sources. The first choice would be through oneof four distributors. They include: MBA USA (Mark Bates Associates) Lockmasters5. Here we have a before and after of the Martincomposite blank impressioning system.Photograph 5,5 shows a before andafter of the Martin composite blankimpressioning system. The Martinsystem uses a lead replacement forthe bitting area of the blank. This issupposed to be one of the easiestmethods of impressioning because ofthe ease of reading the marks. Thebook not only covers numerousmethods of impressioning, but goesinto detail about the steps involved foreach method. Some of the photographs in thebook are a little dark, however theyare all very usable. Overall I can’t sayenough good things about this massof reference material. There is one more really neatfeature about the book. Because thereis so much information, most thingswill show up in more than one place. An index is the usual answer to thisproblem and the book has a good onethat is 85 pages long. However, tomake things really easy, Tobias hasset up a search function on thesecurity.org web site. There are two ways to do thesearch. An index search and a textsearch. An index search will return alist of hits. You can scroll through thelist and click the one that best fits yourdescription. It will tell you the chapter, section and page number along withapproximately 300 words of text aswell as illustrations and photos as theyappear in the book. MSC located in Hamburg GermanyThe second source is the Internet.By going to www.security.org, you willbe able to place an order on line.If you would like to contact theauthor, there are several ways you cando it.Marc Weber Tobias welcomesfeedback from readers. His e-mailaddress is mwtobias@security.org Hemay be contacted toll free utilizingInternet telephony or videoconferencing throughhttp://www.security.org. What wouldwe do without technology!I hope your day was as good asmine. See you next month.Reprinted from The National Locksmith September 2001
