DIRECTOR’S PAGEIn This IssueWe break glass. Twice! Nothing to be scared of. It just means relockers (might) haveto be dealt with. No biggie. And, on the heels of issues dedicated to fire vaults made byMosler and Diebold, we add the number three maker to the list: Herring-Hall-Marvin and abypass method you will find useful one day. Enjoy!Dave McOmieDrill Bits For SaleAfter nearly four decades as safe technician extraordinaire at the Seattlebranch of Allied Security (my alma mater), Ed Lee has finally unplugged hisdrill motor and retired. BREAKING GLASSAdesco: Breaking Glass On PurposeI was in the van on the freeway, headedthree states over on a vault job, when thisemergency came in. Medical facility cannotget into main drug safe. Come immediately!Amazingly, it was just two exits ahead, so itwas doable. I never get lucky like that!4 Spring 2015 The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSAlthough the name tag hadfallen off, the offset dial andhandle are fairly unique, and I recognized the safe aslikely coming from Sun Safein South Korea. These havebeen private-labeled by ALS,Centurion, Eagle, Gardall,Hercules and others, but fromthe white/green color scheme,my money is on Adesco.Sun hinge. The National Safeman Spring 2015 5

BREAKING GLASSCorrect code followed by # to send code to the lock produced the familiar dull click of a cross threaded drive screw on this6120. I botched what was likely an easy opening, by getting in a hurry and putting on JumpBox and cross threading it sobadly that I had to drill. The second I hit # with the JumpBox turned on, I realized it was a mistake, and turned it off. I thenused the correct procedure, which is to leave JumpBox in the off position until three seconds AFTER hearing the dull click, and then turning it on to boost power during the lock bolt extension cycle to try and clear the cross thread. Did it a dozentimes to no avail. It was too badly cross threaded to be fixed this way. Of course, I did not let on to either the locksmith orhis client, that I had blown it. I proceeded to drill.6 Spring 2015 The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSFacing what turned out to be a 14-hour driveto my vault job, I was in a massive hurry toget this puppy open and hit the road. So, Imeasured 2-7/16” up from spindle center anddrilled. When I got through the door, I lookedin and saw glass. Put my drill motor in highspeed, hoping to burn a hole in the glass andhave the glass stay intact long enough for meto punch the lock bolt and turn the handle. Butof course this did not work. The glass brokeimmediately. The good news was that my holewas right on target, right on the lock bolt. The even better news wasthat after the lock bolt waspunched, the handle turnedto open the safe! In thisphoto, the handle is in theunlocked position. The National Safeman Spring 2015 7

BREAKING GLASSBack side of door with back panel attached. This is a useful photo to have for future reference. It tells us total door thickness as well as thedepth from door face to the door bolts.8 Spring 2015 The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSBack panel removed. This is a 1-way boltwork, with four door bolts, all on the opening side. The National Safeman Spring 2015 9

BREAKING GLASSThe lock is mounted VU. Therelocker that did not fire isto the right of the lock in thisphoto (which is to the left ofthe lock from the outside of alocked safe). We will see in amoment why it didn’t fire.Punch sticks through drilled hole. I hadto break up the lock bolt a bit, to createenough room for the bolt bar to pass.Would have been cleaner on both theopening and the repair if I had kept thehole under the dial ring and punched/shoehorned out the lock bolt.10 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSArrow points to why therelocker did not fire. The cotter key put infor shipping was neverremoved. In safes withglass, this happensfrequently. Rarely tome, but this was a niceexception to my personalrule. (My personal rule is:if it weren’t for bad luck, I’dhave no luck at all, whichisn’t entirely true. But itfeels true. Totally.)Lock removed. The National Safeman Spring 2015 11

BREAKING GLASSThe glass was caught by the lip at the bottom of the door. Better than a dustpan!I packed my tools and boogieddown the road, to the vault we willopen in the last article in this issue.I gave the local locksmith a decal toplace over the repair site, which heused to great effect. Since thereis no other name on this safe, it isnow a Diebold!12 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSAmsec: Breaking Glass AccidentallyWe opened this one a few years ago at aPenParty right after Amsec introduced thisnew series of safe. I didn’t even knowthere was glass. All we knew is thatthe lock was not opening on the factorycombo. Nothing felt amiss. The National Safeman Spring 2015 13

BREAKING GLASSThese BigRed dials are apleasure to operate. Theslightly soft rubber dial knobis a home run design thatcustomers love.Do NOT use a slam hammer or dial presson a BigRed dial. It will usually just makea mess. Center drill the spindle until thedial will come off.14 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSLook at the end of the spindle and you can see where the drill bit neatly cut it away, leaving a good amount sticking out tograb onto. It took two holes to open the safe. The first one was right at the fence — a good place to be if you aren’t sureof the problem. The second hole was for the relocker that fired when we unintentionally broke glass that we didn’t evenknow was there. The exact drill points are on this photo. The National Safeman Spring 2015 15

BREAKING GLASSWhen the drill bit penetrated the case, itsnagged the fence and immediately brokeit off. The dial was turned to open the lock. The external relocker was drilled forand spun retracted with a 1/8” drillbit. More on this in a minute.16 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSBack side of door with back panel attached.Let’s zoom in for a look at the round thingyin the middle of the door. That round thingy is a diabolicalwarranty sticker that has madesafecrackers everywhere workhard to scope the CKH. Grrrrr. The National Safeman Spring 2015 17

BREAKING GLASSBack panel removed. This is a 1-way boltwork, with four door bolts on the opening side.18 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSThe lock is mounted VU.Alongside and runningparallel to the lock is theexternal relocker. WhenI spun it retracted with adrill bit, it cocked itself offto one side, exposing thedrilled hole.Total door thicknessis just a smidgenover 4-1/2”.The National Safeman Spring 2015 19

BREAKING GLASSThe 1/4” drilled hole wasclose to being perfectlycentered on the RL. Sowe used a smaller bit toflex off to one side of theRL to spin it retracted.Note: had our drill bitbeen on the other side ofthe RL, we would haveput our motor in reverseto spin down the RL.Glass in bottom of door.20 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSBack cover of BigRed removed; external relocker in fired position. The National Safeman Spring 2015 21

BREAKING GLASSHHM Fire VaultHerring-Hall-Marvin fire-resistive vault door. Was used for years with dial taped in unlockedposition, and then somebody removed the tape and spun the dial.22 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSDial and handle. Most HHM fire vaults use an L handle, but afew use a big T handle. Both use a big fancynut like this one which makes ID a snap. The National Safeman Spring 2015 23

BREAKING GLASSHHM hinge. Similar to the arrow-shaped straps used on some of their fire safes, but with the point squared off.Old UL label.24 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman

BREAKING GLASSNotice the unusual location of the changing index, a little more than 8 digits to the right of the opening index. Thisindicates a true LH lock, which makes sense, given the age of this door and the fact that its hinged are on the left. The National Safeman Spring 2015 25

BREAKING GLASSThe drill point is3-3/4” R. This putsus right at the endof the hinged lockbolt. We insert asmall, stout wirewith a 90 bend onthe tip, hook theend of the lockbolt and pull. Turnhandle, the vault isopen. Handle is inunlocked position.Tired from a very long drive, I got right to businessand drilled to take advantage of the emergencyescape device. This is the view through the drilledhole. We see the tip of the lock bolt. Perfect.26 Spring 2015 T The National Safeman
