CLUB 470 * DISTRICT 5160 * ORGANIZED APRIL 29, 1926www.rotary5160.orgMEETING DATE: July 10, 2018www.woodlandrotary.orgToday's Meeting Today was the first meeting of the reign of Michael Chandler. PresidentMike greeted us all and had Tom Schwarzgruber lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Rotarysingers, Steve Venables, Dan Stroski, Marc Faye, Jim McGibbon, and Craig Jones led us in asmooth rendition of Rotary Grace.Steve Venables then interrupted the proceedings to properly induct President Mike intooffice. The “Ceremony of the Corn” was then held. Karl Diekman led the parade with the broom sweepingout the old and sweeping in the new. Steve presented Mike with two ears of corn. The first symbolizes thehope for a prosperous, successful year for the Club. The second was peeled back to reveal (in addition toworms) the kernals, symbolizing the individual members of the Club. All members then lined up and shookPresident Mike’s hand and paid one penny to President Mike.

Visiting Rotarians/Guests Steve Venables introduced David Wirth of Wirth Furniture. David is a pastmember.

AnnouncementsAfter his proper induction Michael thanked and praised Past President, Peter Holmes (whowas absent), for his excellent year, and then asked for “Happy Time”. Several chose this as the opportunityto pay for past birthdays and anniversaries.Dan Stroski paid 20, celebrating 42 years of marriage with Ginny.Jim McGibbon had his 78th birthday on June 24th. He celebrated for three weeks back east.Ken Nordgren paid tribute to his father, a Rotarian, who passed away two weeks ago, and hecelebrated his 22nd anniversary with Diana Harvey on July 9th.Chuck Maltese took Joyce to the hotel where they spent their honeymoon 56 years ago July7th. This time he cried in the bathroom.Barbara Sonin was happy to have a visit from all three of her children and their children thispast week, and she was even happier that they all left today.On July 3rd Marc Faye celebrated 58 years of marriage to Gerda.Alan Flory was happy that Gerry was doing well after hip replacement surgery and that twoof his grandchildren received master’s degrees, one from Cal Poly and one from Sacramento State.

Carl Rodegerdts married June 57 years ago on July 1st.Jane (McNary) O’Meara was happy her son got his paramedic’s license and she spent herbirthday at the Boy Scout Camp at Wolfeborow where she was a teacher. A woman of hidden talents.Last but not least, Michael Chandler rang the bell for his wonderful 3 weeks and a great 4thweek of vacation. Some details are below.Birthdays and Anniversaries see aboveRecognition Karl Diekman was our first fine master for the new year. He picked on manyof us with questions about Rotary that most of us could answer.Jennifer Ward and Jim Nolan had the softies, the name of our immediate Past President(Peter Holmes) and the identity of our current President. Fortunately neither had an embarrassing response.Lori Ross remembered that Tony Delevati is our President Elect.Christian Sherrill, like the rest of us, did not know the name of the first President of the Club,H.S. Summer.Gary Wirth guessed that we have nine directors on our board. We have eleven.Jim Taylor, Roy Holmes, Kris Kristensen, and Aniek Ramsay were asked about the levels ofsupport in sequence. Our Club is supported by District 5160 which is supported by Zone 25, which issupported by Rotary International. Roy Holmes was asked the number of Clubs in our District. He guessed65. There are 71 with one provisional club, in Solano County, making 72.

Karl Diekman fined himself for some reason.Dick Hoppin was one short on guessing the number of levels of service. There are five. Oneis club service.Bob Nakken named another, community service. Steve Venables named another, youthservice, and Nick Roncoroni knew vocational service. The last is international service.Rags to RichesScott Johnston won a free lunch.

Today’s ProgramMichael Chandler was the program. President Mike complimented Peter Holmesand the Club for achieving 100% Paul Harris membership last year. Michael plans to continue Peter’s “Getto Know Your Rotarian”. Michael was born here in Woodland and graduated from Woodland High School.His parents were Herb and Iona Chandler. Herb was a beloved fixture in our club for years. In 1967Michael entered UCD and lived in the dorms for one quarter and then in January, 1968, he went to work forthe UCD Fire Department. He stayed for 36 years, becoming chief. After retiring from UCD he became theFire Chief for Yoche DeHe and worked in that capacity for another eight years before retiring.Michael then shared some of the highlights of his vacation. He and Randi took a cruise on theQueen Mary II from New York to England and then to Norway and then back. He showed a few goodpictures. They were told to go to the top of the mountain above Bergen, which is beautiful, for a great view.At the top it was rainy and foggy with nothing of a view. He was told that Norway has no bad weather, onlybad clothes.Michael asked us all to remember to silence our cell phones and to stay off them during meetings. Itwill be a 5 if caught using your phone, 10 if it rings. If you advertise during a meeting, it will cost 20.If you have to leave early, please remember to let the speaker know by apologizing to him or her.Michael’s phone, very timely, started to flash. Jim Nolan paid his fine.Michael’s priorities will be the Rotary Foundation and continued contributions of 100 byevery member every year. Michael wants to focus on a Grant committee to get more money from theDistrict for our programs. Tabb Randolph wanted another explanation of Paul Harris points. Michaelpolitely referred him to Tony Delevati.Upcoming Programs Next week our own Dan Stroski will tell us about Honor Flight.
