Stately Stitchers Quilt GuildNews LetterJuly– August 2012News from the PresidentI have observed a common characteristic (a thread) among quilters. It is generosity. I have seen quilters selflesslyhelp one another and donate their time and fabric to charities. I got my first clear picture of this when working onthe Camo quilts for the 200th National Guard Unit in 2011. Quilters willingly donated countless hours to completequilts to be provided to members of the 200th prior to their deployment. The Camo quilts and the projects StatelyStichers have been involved with this year provide great encouragement to me as a quilter, community member, andindividual. Many of you are aware that I am preparing for my fourth trip to Nicaragua. The ladies there remind me of my friendsand fellow quilters here. Last year we provided ribbon yarn and crochet hooks to “help them”. By the time we arrived in the community the next morning, one of the ladies had used some of the ribbon yarn to make bracelets fortwo of us. Before the end of our time there, the ladies made a bracelet for every female member of our group! The level of poverty in Rancherias, Nicaragua is overwhelming and beyond anything I have seen in the US. Despitethe poverty, the community members work to better their situation. Most are not in poverty by choices they havemade. One of our goals is to empower the local community/church women to grow their own businesses. The ladies haveasked us to teach them crafts that they can make and sell to support their families. We have three crafts planned thisyear: crocheted pot scrubbers, micro-macramé jewelry, and the flower pins that I have given as birthday gifts to ourmembers. We try to choose projects that require limited resources and supplies that can be purchased locally. In true quilter generosity, several of our members have donated supplies for the craft projects. Thank you for beingthe generous, giving, caring quilters you are!“Quiltin’ on the River”Has been changed to theChamber Community Room800 W Dakota July 20-22, 2012LuAnn GarlandFeatured TeacherFor info call Patti 224-4237July 9thAugust 13thTrunkCharliesShowCraft RoomLynn SudbeckMake & Take
