Checkmate Quilt1. Draw a line along one diagonal on the wrongside of the (4) 51 2" Background squares.Place (1) 51 2" Background and (1) HST squareright sides together, matching the edges andpin. Press seams open.Press the binding strip in half wrong sidestogether.12. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, andquilt top (right side up). Baste the layerstogether and quilt as desired. Trim excessbatting and backing even with the top afterquilting is completed.13. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the bindingto the top of the quilt through all layersmatching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stopapproximately 12" from where you started.Lay both loose ends of binding flat alongquilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, foldthem back on themselves and press to forma crease. Using this crease as your stitchingline, sew the two open ends of the bindingright sides together. Trim seam to 1 4" andpress open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.14.
