By now several of you know that I have a weird phone area code (607)that displays Ithaca, NY! I moved from there 3 years ago and now live in Salem, VA. Star Quilters Secretary‛s Report for April 2020Minutes for Special Zoom Meeting 05/18/2020On Monday evening, the guild had it‛s first General Meeting on Zoom for a Show & Tell.Due to Covid19, we have not been able to meet for several months, and this meeting wasto allow our members to safely gather together as a community and share what wehave been doing during the “Stay at Home” orders from the Governor.Beginning at 7:00 pm, members were able to log into Zoom and visit before the meeting.Then the meeting was called to order by Bonnie Scott, President at 7:18 by welcomingeveryone. We had a total of 34 participants at this event.Announcements from our President – Bonnie Scott Bonnie first reminded all of us we do have members who are not online, so we needto think of creative ways to include them during this time, by calling or sendingthem a card reminding them we are here for them. A big thank you to Kelly Zuber and Jill Moody for setting up a Zoom training thatwas held on Thursday May 18th. Another thank you to Kelly Zuber for hosting this Zoom meeting. Thanks to Jill Moody on her first Newsletter and her new Thursday-Info toStitch About! Emails. ONE HOUR CHALLENGE 5(9,(:How did your block turn out? Are you still pondering which direction you willgo with your ONE HOUR CHALLENGE? Or, are you more like me, just nowclearing off your cutting mat and finding your displaced rotary cutter? Well,here are a few blocks members posted on Facebook and just in case you needthem, the directions from last month."The general idea is to construct a quilt block in one hour. While you aredoing something mindless like yard work, cleaning the kitchen (notice I didn'tsay house), or watching the sunset, visualize in your mind a quilt blockyou can make in one hour with fabric on hand. Gather your materials,set the clock for one hour, and get started. Choose any design and method,and make it any size you want. Go wild with art or modern, soothe yourself with aloved traditional block, and feel free to use glue, embellishments, embroidery,dye, raid the button box. Quilting is optional. Whatever you do, HAVE FUN! Postyour quilt block on the Star Quilters Facebook page if you wish, but do bring itto the first Guild meeting held after COVID-19 restrictions cease for hanging onthe Challenge wall. They will not be judged, just enjoyed! MEMBERSHIP 2020-2021Eighty-three members have renewed as of Memorial Day! A form isattached in case you haven‛t sent in your membership and checkyet. Please be sure you are using a form that is dated 2020-2021.Dues are 15. Make checks payable to Star Quilters Guild. The2019-2020 year ended APRIL 30, 2020, so now is the time to rejoin.Your membership will be good through April 30, 2021. My mailingaddress is on the form. She still has fabric squares and wouldbe happy to send them as well as the instructions out to any guildmember who wants to sew blocks to enter the lottery. Shecurrently has 34 blocks for the drawing and there are manymore blocks that have not yet been returned. So, there shouldbe enough blocks for at least two drawings. Extra fabric will beshared between the winners to help them finish a quilt with theblocks. Kristen Farwig‛s block is one example of what you coulddo with the material.Kristen'sPage 10
DID YOU KNOW .FABRIC PREPARATION:When you are learning to quilt, you find that everyone has an opinion about theright way to do things. You will find over time, and with lots of practice, whichmethods work best for you and provide your best results. As you begin, though,you may need some suggestions to help you so you can avoid making every error(like I did and do) before figuring out the right way.For your first attempt at quilting, choose a simple pattern for a small project andpurchase good quality fabric. The simple pattern and small project will allow you tostart a project you will actually finish. It is not the time for a king-sized,intricate design quilt. The good fabric will give you a product you can be proud ofwhen it is finished.Once you have chosen your pattern and fabric, you will need to prepare your fabricfor cutting. 1. Wash your fabric first in very warm water.(Precuts should not be washed as they will just be a jumbled mess of threads.)Prewashing will allow it to shrink and you can see if the color is going to bleed. Iusually wash my fabric by hand and run water through it several times if it bleeds,to get rid of the excess color. This is particularly a problem for dark or brightcolor fabrics.If you find there is still color coming from the fabric, you can use green PalmoliveLiquid dishwashing detergent (not in a front-loading machine – too many bubbles)to wash your fabric to release excess dyes. Wash the fabric in a sink and let itsoak for about 30 minutes. Rinse the fabric and repeat if the water does not runclear. It might take 2 or 3 times of washing the fabric to stop the colordischarge.You can also add a Shout Color Catcher sheet or Carbona Color Grabber sheet tothe rinse water to make sure you have caught the extra dye.Interesting links about this topic - https://www.quiltinghub.com/Articles/ArticleID/343 and t-colorbleeding/. 2. I dry my fabric partially by hanging it or drying in the dryer. While it isstill damp, I iron it so it will be nice and smooth for cutting. Be careful not tostretch or pull the fabric out of shape. 3. You may choose to starch your fabrics before cutting. There are spraystarches available for this use. This is optional but many feel that it makesthe fabric easier to cut and piece. 4. Whew! Now your fabric is ready for cutting.Prewashing your fabric seems like a lot of work but better to do this now than toruin your finished quilt when it is washed.Part 2 – Cutting and Piecing coming soon! 2021 QUILT SHOW COMMITTEE UPDATEThe Quilt Show Committee will meet on Tuesday, June 16, by some method. Although Iwould very much like to have an in-person meeting, this will probably not be possible. Detailswill be sent out around June 9th, probably instructions on joining a Zoom meeting. The maindiscussion will be what our quilt show will look like in, hopefully, a post-COVID-19 world,when publicity might begin, and quilt judging categories. But the main goal is staying safe,healthy, and engaged with the quilting community.
