FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK.THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORDLA PRESENTACIÓN DEL SEÑORThis Sunday is one of the oldest feasts of the Church—ThePurification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, popularly knownas “Candlemas.” This feast marks the last feast of theChristmas cycle, celebrating both the purification of theBlessed Virgin Mary forty days after giving birth to JesusChrist and the coming of Our Lord into his Temple. It’s hard to imagine a more dissonant name for a feastthan “The Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” Afterall, how can she who is all-pure be purified?According to the Law, every woman who gives birth to ason must wait forty days before entering the temple, andthen “she shall take two turtles, or two young pigeons, one for a holocaust, and another for sin: and the priestshall pray for her, and so she shall be cleansed” (Lev 12:8).So why did the Blessed Virgin Mary, who had no need tobe purified, submit to the process of purification? St. Bedeexplains,Mary, God’s blessed mother and a perpetual virgin, was, along with the Son she bore, most free from all subjectionto the law [Mary], who by a singular privilege was abovethe law, nevertheless did not shun being made subject tothe principles of the law for the sake of showing us anexample of humility. (Homilies on the Gospels 1.18)Like the Lord being baptized by John the Baptist, eventhough he had no need of it, so too does Mary follow thelaws of purification, even though she has no need forthem, in order to be obedient and a model of humility. This feast also celebrates the coming of the Lord into histemple. As the prophet Malachi proclaims, “presently theLord, whom you seek, and the angel of the testament, whom you desire, shall come to his temple” (Mal 3:1). Inthe Presentation of the Lord, we see the long-expectedfulfillment of God’s promises. For more than amillennium, the Jewish people waited for the Messiah.Generation after generation endured hardship andsuffering—evil kings, idolatrous neighbors, exile—yet still, they waited. This patient expectance is typified in Simeonand Anna, two faithful Jews who greet the baby Jesus inthe Temple, recognizing at last the One who is to come. And what does Simeon say when he sees the Messiah inthe form of a human baby? “My eyes have seen thysalvation.” As St. Basil the Great preached,Now, it is a custom in Scripture to call the Christ of God,salvation, as Simeon says Therefore let us subjectourselves to God, because from him is salvation [Salvation] is not some mere active force, which providesus with a certain grace What then is salvation? ‘For he ismy God and my Savior: he is my protector, I shall bemoved no more’ (Ps 61:3 LXX). The Son, who is from God,is our God. He himself is also Savior of the human race.(Homily on Psalm 61.2)What is our salvation? The very name given to theMessiah tells us, for the name “Jesus” means “God issalvation.” And as St. Peter would later preach about thename of Jesus, “For there is no other name under heavengiven to men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). TheLord comes into his Temple, though a tiny child, to signalthat salvation has arrived.

READINGSFIRST READINGMASS SCHEDULEMON, TUE, THURS & FRIJER 1:4-5, 17-19The word of the LORD came to me, saying: Before Iformed you in the womb I knew you, before you wereborn I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointedyou. But do you gird your loins; stand up and tell them allthat I command you. Be not crushed on their account, asthough I would leave you crushed before them; for it is Ithis day who have made you a fortified city, a pillar ofiron, a wall of brass, against the whole land: againstJudah’s kings and princes, against its priests and people. They will fight against you but not prevail over you, for Iam with you to deliver you, says the LORD.SECOND READING8:00 am & 12:00 pmWEDNESDAY8:00 am & 12:00 pm, 7:00 pm (Spanish)SATURDAY8:00 am & 4:00 pm, 6:00 pm (French)SUNDAY8:00 & 10:00 am, 12:30 pm (Spanish)EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENTWednesday & First Friday 8:30 - 11:30 amANOINTING OF THE SICK1 COR 12:31—13:13Brothers and sisters: Strive eagerly for the greatestspiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellentway. If I speak in human and angelic tongues, but do nothave love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and comprehend allmysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as tomove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If Igive away everything I own, and if I hand my body over sothat I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is notpompous, It is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seekits own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does notbrood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing butrejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes allthings, hopes all things, endures all things. Love neverfails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought tonothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will bebrought to nothing. For we know partially and weprophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, thepartial will pass away. When I was a child, I used to talk asa child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I becamea man, I put aside childish things. At present we seeindistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. Atpresent I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I amfully known. So faith, hope, love remain, these three; butthe greatest of these is love.GOSPELFirst Friday 12:00 pmSACRAMENT OF PENANCESaturday 3:00-3:45 pm, Sunday 11:30 am-12:15 pmMASS INTENTIONSSAT, JAN 298:00 am4:00 pm†SUN, JAN 308:00 am10:00 am12:30 pmMON, JAN 318:00 am12:00 pmJER 1:4-5,17-19/1 COR12:31—13:13/LK 4:21-30 ††Holy Cross ParishionersSeverino Franco Jr.Maria del Refugio Contrera Garcia††Thomas A. They also asked, “Isn’tthis the son of Joseph?” He said to them, “Surely you willquote me this proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say,‘Do here in your native place the things that we heardwere done in Capernaum.’” And he said, “Amen, I say toyou, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in thedays of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a halfyears and a severe famine spread over the entire land. Itwas to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to awidow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, therewere many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha theprophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but onlyNaaman the Syrian.” When the people in the synagogueheard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up,drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of thehill on which their town had been built, to hurl him downheadlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of themand went away.Alberto SantosJoe CharronFOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME1 KGS 3:4-13/MK 6:30-34Andrew SavardAndrea BeaucageIS 6:1-2A, 3-8/1 COR 15:1-11 OR 15:3-8, 11/LK5:1-11 Holy Cross ParishionersWomen’s ClubMargarito Ayala & Madel CarmenLopez

STEWARDSHIP: STEWARDSHIP OF SOCIAL MEDIAvehemently disagree — even the most lovingChristians can throw First Corinthians out the window.“Love is patient, love is kind ” As familiar as thesewords are, they never seem to stray into the territoryof becoming trite or silly. At their core theycommunicate a truth about us and about our Creatorthat never fails to inspire. As everyday stewards we know that we are charged tobe not only gracious but grateful. We receive othersbut we also give thanks for what they bring to us —even if that’s an opportunity to “strive eagerly for thegreatest spiritual gifts.”But despite the fact that you’ve probably heard it atmany weddings over time, First Corinthians isn’t justfor newlyweds. It wasn’t written for married folks. It’sfor every single one of us, in every state of life andevery social situation, in every country and cultureand language across the globe. So before the next time you post anything online, Isuggest giving First Corinthians a read — andremember, love never fails.Which means that First Corinthians is even for theonline world. It’s for Facebook and Twitter andInstagram and all the other platforms I’m forgetting(there seems to be a new one every day, doesn’tthere?).A sense of division — whether rooted in politics, culture or anything else — is growing in our world, and it’s never more obvious than when we observeinteractions online. It is far easier, after all, toremember what love is when a human being of fleshand blood stands before us. When all we see is anavatar or a profile picture on a screen — especiallyaccompanied by an opinion with which wePARISH STEWARDSHIPAPA Electronic GivingAll major credit and debit cards (MasterCard, AmericanExpress, Visa and Discover) as well as direct debitpayments are accepted. FAITHFORMATIONMOST LIKELY.Jesus on Earth did not speakEnglish. This is something we reallydon't think about. However, forpeople who speak more than onelanguage, translating can be adifficult task. Our topic this week is language. The word "Bible" comes from theGreek word library. Many Christiansdo not realize that the many bookswithin the Bible come fromdifferent languages. The threelanguages associated with the Bibleare Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek.Jesus mostly spoke Aramaic, as thiswas the custom language of Judea. The Hebrew language is usuallyassociated with Judaism. Lastly, thelingua franca in Judea was Greek forgentiles and Jews alike. Latin wasalso another language used. However, Latin was used more formilitary purposes. They wrote in languages thatpeople would know like Greek,Aramaic, and Hebrew.Jesus left behind no written record. But his Apostles and their disciplesdid. The followers of Jesuswitnessed the events of Jesus' life,or received accounts through wordof mouth. They interpreted whatthey saw or heard according to therevelation they received from God.They were inspired by the truth ofJesus to communicate the Gospels(Greek for 'good news') to others.SAINT QUOTE OF THE WEEK“Be brave and try to detach yourheart from worldly things. Do yourutmost to banish darkness fromyour mind and come to understandwhat true, selfless piety is. Throughconfession, endeavor to purify yourheart of anything which may stilltaint it. Enliven your faith, which isessential to understand andachieve piety.” Saint John BoscoFORMED WATCHLISTThis week’s FORMED weeklywatchlist is St. Bernadette ofLourdes, a faithful retelling of thestory of this saint’s edifying life. Please visit us at holycrossrcc.comto watch this inspiring movie forfree on FORMED.org!UPCOMING BIBLE STUDYHoly Cross is starting a ten-weekstudy on the Gospel of Matthew. Our start date will be Tuesday,February 8, at 10:00—11:30 am inone of our classrooms here oncampus. Our group leader will be writer, editor, and catechist, Kristen NoakesFry.Books are 20.
