Weekend Offering December 25 26th, 2021 Weekly Offering not available at print Weekly Average Needed Weekly Over/(Short) Christmas was Last Saturday we received our Messiah, but ina manner that we did not expect and so some of us received the“Season,” but did not receive our Messiah in person in our hearts.Christmas was not just a week ago it is NOW! We have a secondchance to receive our Lord and Savior if we can reset our hearts to doso. Last Sunday we were also given the Holy Family Jesus, Maryand Joseph (J M J) to show us the importance of the family as thesmallest unit of the Catholic Church, a family that we can closelyassociate with. On the first of this year we also received Our MotherMary. We are no longer outcasts in the world, but we now have afamily the family of the Church, the Body of Christ, but alsomembership in the family of heaven and with the Holy Family Mary is our Mother! So much Joy awaits us, so much Joy isexperienced Now! With more to come. We celebrate Christmas not onone day alone but for an OCTAVE (that’s Eight days). We alsocelebrate the “Season of Christmas” until the Baptism of the Lord onthe 9th of January. So, you see, we are still celebrating Christmas. Ifyou took down your tree, put it back up! We Catholics are Christians, but we are strange Christians. Eventhough we celebrate Christmas as a time of Joy, we also recognize it asa time of sacrifice and suffering. As Catholics we are not “either/or”but we are “both/and” we combine, and quite naturally so, Joy andSuffering, Life and Death. In fact, we recognize “death” as a new life,a new beginning in the Joy of joining God in heaven. Death is not theend, it is not something to be feared, but something to be embraced andwe celebrate that even during the joy of Christmas even during theOctave of Christmas. We celebrate Christmas, the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ on the25th of December, but we also celebrate the martyrdom of St. Stephen(one of the first seven deacons of the Church) on the 26th (when it isnot on Sunday as it is this year) our First Saint and Martyr. We alsocelebrate the martyrdom of the Holy Innocents on the 28th and themartyrdom of St. Thomas Beckett on the 29th. Just as we rejoice andmourn at once, in the Birth and in the Passion of Our Lord; so we bothrejoice and mourn in the death of martyrs. We mourn for the sins of theworld that has martyred them; and we rejoice, that another soul isnumbered among the Saints in Heaven. That is why it is so fitting that we celebrate these martyrs aroundChristmas. Christ who was of heaven was born on earth so that thoseof the earth might be able to be born into heaven. Again: Christ wasborn to die so that those who unite their death to His might be bornagain into eternal life. Life and death. We must have death to have newlife. This creation must end to have the joy of the new creation. This Sunday we celebrate the Epiphany. We recognize the publicrecognition of Jesus as Lord and Savior, but by way, also, ofrecognizing His suffering and death to come through the gifts of theMagi as they visit the Christ Child Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.Gold to recognize the new King, royalty. Frankincense to recognizeJesus’ Godhead. But Myrrh to shadow His death to come. Joy and death are celebrated by Catholics almost equally thereshould be no fear of either in our worship, but an expectation of both tocome and yet both are always present. We are a people whose lives arean Alleluia we are a people who wrap death with our joy. Dcn. James Boorman 3
