Pastoral ReflectionARTABAN GIFTThere’s a story called “THE OTHER WISE MAN” by Henry Van Dyke. It’s about the 4 th person who is supposed to accompany theTHREE WISE MEN on their way to search for the New-Born King. His name is ‘ARTABAN’. As Artaban prepared for the journey,he takes with him a bag of precious STONES to give to the new-born King.On his way to join the three Wise Men, he stops to help a poor man. The delay was just enough to make him miss hisrendezvous with the others. Artaban never does catch up with them. He constantly runs into people who need help. And healways stops to help them. Eventually, Artaban gives away all his precious stones. As the story ends, Artaban becomes old andpoor. He never realized his dream to meet the King of Kings and place at his feet his gift of precious stones. But the story doesnot end here. One day Artaban was in Jerusalem. The city is buzzing with excitement. Authorities are about to execute a criminal. WhenArtaban sees the criminal, his heart skips a beat. Something tells him that this is the King of Kings for whom he has beensearching all his life. Artaban is heartbroken at what he sees. He is even more heartbroken when he sees he can do nothing tohelp the king. Then something remarkable happens, Artaban hears the King’s voice say to him: “Don’t be brokenhearted,Artaban, you’ve been helping me all your life. When I was hungry, you gave me food. When I was thirsty, you gave me drink. When I was naked, you clothed me. When I was a stranger, you took me in.” The story of Artaban is the story of many peoplein our world. They begin a life with a dream of doing something great. But as time passes, circumstances beyond their control interfere withtheir dream. Eventually, it disappears. The FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY reminds us that we all have a GIFT we can give to the King of Kings. Our Gift is far moreprecious than those of the Three Kings. Our Gift is not a one-time of Gold, Frankincense or Myrrh. It’s a full-time GIFT OF LOVEAND SERVICE. Some people may consider us as foolish for giving this gift. But that’s only because they don’t know the end ofthe story. The story will end with Jesus saying to us what He said to Artaban: “COME, YOU WHO ARE BLESSED BY MY FATHER; INHERITTHE KINGDOM PREPARED FOR YOU FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.” “For I was hungry and you gave me food whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did it for me ” (Mt. 25: 34-35) Let us close with the Prayer forGENEROSITY by St. Ignatius of Loyola: “LORD, teach me to be GENEROUS. Teach me to serve YOU as you deserve; to GIVE andnot to COUNT the cost; to FIGHT and not to HEED the wounds; to TOIL and not to SEEK for rest; to LABOR and not to ASK forREWARD; except to KNOW that I AM DOING YOUR WILL.” AMEN AND GOD BLESS!!!#109. A STORY OF SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT THINGS AT THE RIGHT PLACE. A neighbor found Nasruddin on hand andknees. “What are you searching for, Mullah?” “MY key.” Both men got on their knees to search. After a while the neighbor says,“By the way where did you lose it?” “At home.” “Good Lord! Then why are you searching here?” “Because it’s brighter here.”Search for the right things at the right place to find it. The three wise men searched for God and they found Him.‘Epiphany’ means manifestation. God manifested himself to non-Jews. By this we know that God is not restricted to anyparticular religion and all those who seek Him with a sincere heart are sure to find Him. Amen! This Sunday begins the National Migration Week. On Monday, we have the feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. On the 4 th,we have the memorial of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious (USA) and the first native-born citizen canonized (1975). On the 5th,we celebrate the feast day of St. John Neumann, Bishop (USA) and first American bishop canonized (1977). On the 6 th, we havethe optional memorial of St. Andre Bessette, Religious (USA) and known as a healer and “Miracle Man of Montreal”. He is thepatron of caregivers. On the 7th, we have the feast day of St. Raymond of Penyafort, Priest and patron of canonists and lawyers. This is also the First Friday of January. We have adoration and benediction on this day.
