Knoxville Jewish AllianceHa’KolHa’KolKJA President Elect’s RemarksDecember 2020By Bryan Goldberg, KJA President ElectKJA Ha’KolIn life, it is rare that any of us are able to pursue a cause oraltruistic purpose with our full measure. For a lucky few of us,President Elect’s Remarks .2sometimes our calling in life affords us that opportunity. But forPreschool at AJCC. . . .3the vast majority, our time and energies are often split betweenJFS Virtual Coffee Klatch .4our professional responsibilities, raising our children and ourNovember at the KJA. .5philanthropic pursuits. In the fall of 2017, our Executive DirectorContributions . .6announced her intentions to depart, while at the same time ourorganization was looking for a new President. Chip Raymanaccepted the responsibility and led the KJA despite his relative newcomer status and activeretirement. I had the pleasure of working alongside Chip these past three years and can say without hesitation that he averagedwell over 40 hours a week. He has done an admirable service representing our community to the greater public, working withour various committees and boards and being a leader to our professional staff in the absence of an Executive Director. Duringthis transitional time, his leadership has moved us forward. Our organization will forever be grateful for his service and ourcommunity is the better for it.My tenure as President starts later this month and in the next Ha’Kol I will lay out my vision for the next two years. Thismonth I am encouraging all KJA members and donors to attend our Annual meeting. Over Zoom. T meeting will be held onSunday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. and the Zoom invite will be sent via email.I will end this article by askingeach of you to take a brief moment andreflect on the magnitude of this yearand what it has meant to our community. Our camp and preschool revenues have been hard hit and we cannot offer in person programming withthe center closed. Yet as a communitywe have continued our philanthropicgiving through our Teacher ReliefFund and our Jewish Family Services. Ilook forward to the day when I cangreet every one of you at the frontdoor, but none of us know when thatday will come. So during this lastmonth of 2020, please consider making a contribution to our campaign. We have in the past, and will strive inthe future, to provide those programsand services needed in ourcommunity. Success depends onsupport from all of you, your friends, your families, and your businesses.A special thanks goes to Marty and Martha Iroff for the donation of materials and labor inpainting parking and handicap designations for the AJCC Parking Lot.6800 Deane Hill Drive Knoxville, TN 37919 865.690.6343 www.jewishknoxville.org

Shalom Y’all!By Rabbi Erin BoxtDecember 202015 Kislev -16 Tevet 5781Since October, I have been taking Mussar Season II fromthe Mussar Institute. We began this semester with the middotTemple Beth El Times(categories) of Savlanut (patience) and Slicha (forgiveness). These two concepts go hand in hand. I remember some adviceRabbi’s Message. . .10that was given to me when I first journeyed to Israel. I wasPresident’sRemarks. .11informed that although it may not seem so, Israel is full ofpeople with a lot of patience. However, it was important that IJulie Silver Concert .11had patience in order to see it in others. “Savlanut, Savlanut ”Religious School News.13I heard over and over again, from every Israeli I came inTBE Food & Coat Drive. .15contact with. It is fitting that in order to understand or get toContributions . . .16the meaning of Slicha, one must have Savlanut first. The Hebrew word Savlanut also means tolerance. The words that mean“suffer” (sevel) and “burdens” (sivlot) come from the same Hebrew root. This teaches us that patience is not always a pleasantexperience. It takes hard work to have patience and evenharder work to put the act of patience into practice. Untilwe endure or suffer burdens, we will not truly experienceSavlanut. Do not forget that sometimes those burdensinclude tolerating others or their behaviors. Justremember – others must have Savlanut with us asAnother year has passed, O’Lord, well so just as we are tolerating others, they are alsoAnother year has passed.tolerating us!The Hebrew word Slicha is found throughout our HighMay our memories of the last yearHoly Day liturgy.
