LESSON 21“HELPFULNESS”(page 1)Philip Helps an Ethiopian ManWHAT’S THE POINT?It is an amazing privilege to be able to help others gain the proper perspective ofwho God is and what He has done through Jesus. We can start by telling people inour neighborhoods and communities. But God also calls us to go and tell. We mayneed to not only go down the road, but travel to a distant land.BIBLE CONNECTIONActs 8:26-39 (page 1196)CHARACTER WORDHelpfulness - To give aid or usefulassistance to another personTEACHING OBJECTIVEGod wants me to help peoplelearn the truth about Jesus, eventhose who are different than me.MEMORY LINKMark 16:15“And He said to them, ‘Go into allthe world and preach the gospelto every creature.’”(KBC Study Bible pg. 1099)SUPPLIES NEEDEDTHIS WEEKGET CONNECTEDPaperMEMORY LINK ACTIVITYOption 1: Verse page fromlessonOption 2: Index cardsBIBLE CONNECTIONDominoesSURF TEAM LEADERMemory link cards, Hang 10pages, Index cards, pensMAKE-IT-STICKREVIEW GAMEOption 1: Painter’s tapeOption 2: Painter’s tape, 10sheets of paperGod told Philip to go down the road where he found a man from another country. The man from Ethiopia could not understand the Scriptures. He needed help. Byobeying God’s instructions, Philip was positioned to help the Ethiopian understandand obey God’s word. The gospel is for everyone. It is for the whole creation. It is for one and all. How willthey hear the Good News unless we go and tell? May we position ourselves to helpothers understand God’s word!GET CONNECTEDBuilding relationships in Surf Teams; introducing today’s lesson10-15MINUTESPaperUse the following conversation prompts to get to know the kids in your SurfTeam and to introduce today’s lesson.PrepareWrite one Get Connected conversation prompt on a piece of paper repeatingthe questions so each child will receive a prompt.Explain that the kids will help lead the Get Connected discussion. Hand outthe conversation prompt pages you created. Direct the kids to choose a friend, ask the conversation prompt, and listen to the friend’s answer. As time permits, allow kids to repeat the process with another clubber. What does helpfulness mean? (To give aid or useful assistance to anotherperson.) What are some ways you can be helpful to your parents? To your teacher atschool? To your friends? Describe a time when someone was helpful to you.Guide clubbers to locate and mark today’s Bible Connection and Memory Linkin their Bibles so they can find the pages quickly as directed in the session.Worship TipToday’s character word is helpfulness. If you are the worship leader, be helpfulto the kids by being consistent in the way you lead. Don’t change the motionsto the song from week to week. Provide the words to the songs so the kidsand leaders can fully participate. If you are a Surf Team leader, be helpful bymodeling participation and singing. Avoid talking to the kids or other leadersduring this important time. By being mindful of these simple things, you will behelping the kids have the best opportunity to worship. 10-15MEMORY LINKMINUTESLESSON 21“HELPFULNESS”(page 2)Teach a Bible verse to clubbers; help them memorize the verseMark 16:15No supplies neededFocus on the BibleIf you brought your Bible today, hold it high in the air. The Bible is the mosthelpful book because it teaches about God. Everything God wants us to knowabout Him is found in His Word. Where can you read your Bible? (Allow forresponses.) You can read your Bible anywhere. One man in the story todayread the Scripture in his chariot on the road. But needed someone to help himunderstand. Here at KBC we give you a Bible and teach you Bible stories tohelp you understand more about God.Focus on today’s Memory LinkGuide clubbers to find Mark 16:15 in their KBC Study Bible (page 1099). Ask avolunteer to read the verse aloud as others follow along. Who can help me bytelling the group who spoke these words? (Jesus) In today’s Memory Link, Jesustells His followers to go into the world and preach the gospel to every creature.Turn to your neighbor and say, “Go and preach the gospel.” The gospel means‘good news.’ The good news is that Jesus died to pay for your sins so that youcan have a relationship with God. Turn to your neighbor and say “That’s goodnews!” Jesus commands us to go and tell this good news to every creature, which means to all people. everyone!Option 1 - PASS THE PAGEVerse page from lessonAsk the clubbers to stand in a circle and be ready to help their neighbor. Givethe child next to you the full page copy of the verse from your lesson. Ask theclubber to read the first word of the verse then pass the page to the next childwho reads the second word. Continue until every word of the verse has beenread aloud. For the second round, turn the page over so kids can’t read thewords. This time the clubber will try to say the word by memory then pass thepage to the next child who does the same. If the clubber can’t remember thenext word, one of the clubbers next to him can help by reminding him what wordcomes next.“And He said to them, ‘Go intoall the world and preach thegospel to every creature.’”(KBC Study Bible pg. 1099)Teaching TipThis is the final lessonfor the school year. Takesome time to encouragethe clubbers to continuereading their Bibles athome to discover moretruth from God’s Word.Discuss ways the kidscan remember to read theBible. Share ideas such askeeping their KBC Bibleon the table by their bedor reading at the sametime each day. Allow yoursurf team to brainstormcreative ideas on ways tomemorize verses such asposting them on a mirror.Option 2 - PICK UP THEN LAY DOWNIndex cardsPrepareWrite a word of the verse on each index card.Shuffle the cards and lay them down word side up. Ask the child on your right tofind the first word of the verse, pick it up, and say the word aloud. The secondchild will find the second word of the verse, pick it up, and say the word aloud.Continue until the whole verse has been read. 10-15BIBLE CONNECTIONMINUTESLESSON 21“HELPFULNESS”(page 3)Teaching today’s character word through gospel-centered Bible storyDominoesPrepareSet up the dominoes as you introduce the story so that when you push the firstdomino, the rest will fall down.Introduce the StoryWhat instructions were given in today’s Memory Link, Mark 16:15? (Go andpreach/tell) Yes, help to share the gospel. In today’s story, God gave Philip anopportunity to do exactly that! God sent Philip to a man who needed help. Theman was from the country of Ethiopia. Is the good news for those only in ourcountry? No! The good news of Jesus is for everyone, no matter where they arefrom, what language they speak, or the color of their skin. By obeying God’sinstructions, Philip was positioned to help the Ethiopian understand and obeyGod’s Word. (Push the first domino so that the row of dominoes falls down.) Hehelped to spread the gospel.Use the BibleInvite clubbers to open their KBC Study Bibles to Acts 8:26-39 (page 1196). Askclubbers to read along as you read the story aloud, one section at a time.Acts 8:26-30Read Acts 8:26-30 aloud as the kids follow along. Through an angel, God toldPhilip to get up and go to a certain area on the road. So he got up and went. Hefound a man from Ethiopia who was a eunuch, or a servant. This Ethiopian manworked for the queen of the Ethiopians and had been in Jerusalem to worship. He was sitting in his chariot reading. God told Philip to go to the chariot and stopit. Philip ran to the chariot and heard the man reading from the Old Testamentbook of Isaiah. Philip asked the man if he understood what he was reading.Talk About ItGod sent Philip to a specific place where he would meet a man he could help.Philip heard the man reading the words of the prophet Isaiah. This specialservant of the queen of Ethiopia was on his way back from Jerusalem where hehad been to worship God. But he did not have a relationship with God throughJesus. Philip asked him if he understood the words of Isaiah. Philip was ready tohelp the Ethiopian understand.Acts 8:31-35Read Acts 8:31-35 aloud as the kids follow along. The Ethiopian said that hecould not understand Isaiah unless someone helped him. He asked Philip tosit in the chariot with him. The Scripture he was reading was about a sheepbeing taken to the slaughter. The Ethiopian man asked Philip who the prophetwas talking about. Philip started right where the man was reading and began topreach about Jesus.Teaching TipWhen reading scripturealoud with children, remember to speak slowlyand clearly so strugglingreaders can easily followalong. Use lots of vocaland facial expression.Look up and make asmuch eye contact asyou can. Feel free topause when needed todefine unfamiliar wordsor explain complexconcepts.Teaching TipThe KBC Study Bible(NKJV) uses the term“eunuch” to describe theEthiopian man, which mayprompt some questionsfrom the kids.Use great care whenexplaining what a eunuchis or what it means fora man to be a eunuch.Explain that this eunuchwas simply a specialhelper to the queen. If achild expresses curiosity, direct her to talk with aparent at home.We recommend you avoidusing the team ‘eunuch”as you tell the story.Instead refer to him as theEthiopian man.Talk About ItThe Ethiopian was from a foreign land and had not heard the truth about Jesus. He did not understand that Isaiah was describing Jesus when he wrote aboutthe sheep. The words written in Isaiah described someone who takes onpunishment and death on behalf of others. Philip knew these truths of the gospelso he began to preach how Jesus took our punishment by dying on the cross. Copyright 2016 KiDs Beach Club is a registered trademark. All rights reserved.

Acts 8:36-39Read Acts 8:31-35 aloud as the kids follow along. As they went down the road, they came to some water. The Ethiopian man asked if he could be baptized.Philip told him he could be baptized if he believed the truth about Jesus with allhis heart. The Ethiopian man said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”Philip said to stop the chariot and both he and the man got out and went into thewater where Philip baptized him. Then the Lord took Philip away. The Ethiopianman went on his way rejoicing.Talk About ItThe Ethiopian man believed the gospel of Jesus. He believed that Jesus wasthe Son of God and that He died for his sins. Because he believed, he wasready for baptism. Baptism was an act of obedience that communicated that Hebelieved. What happened next? The Bible says that God took Philip away rightafter the baptism and then the Ethiopian man went away full of joy. He now hada relationship with God through Jesus Christ.Gospel ConnectionJust like Philip helped the Ethiopian man understand the good news aboutJesus, every week in beach club we have helped you know the good newsabout Jesus too. Use the tip-in pages between pages 626-627 to review withthe kids the good news about how to become a Christian. You can have arelationship with God through Jesus just like the Ethiopian man. How do you dothat? ADMIT you’re a sinner and ask Jesus to FORGIVE your sin. Next, BELIEVEthat Jesus’ sacrifice paid the debt for your sin and then CHOOSE TO FOLLOWJesus by turning away from your sin and choosing God’s way rather than yourown way.LESSON 21“HELPFULNESS”(page 4)Teaching TipKeep in mind that theact of baptism looksdifferent for each churchor denomination. For thisstory, simply keep to thefacts that the Ethiopianwanted to be baptizedbecause he believed inJesus with all his heart. Ifa child shows interest inbaptism, invite him to havea discussion with youafter the Bible story.Lead in closing prayer and dismiss to decision counseling and transition.Application/TransitionPhilip understood the good news about Jesus and helped the Ethiopian manunderstand too. Now that you know the good news about Jesus, who can youhelp by sharing that good news? Guide the kids to look at a child next to themand tell them the good news about Jesus. Telling the good news is easy! Whocan you tell about Jesus today? You can help others by spreading (point to thedominoes) the gospel, just like Philip did.Gospel TipThe discussion between Philip and the Ethiopian man gives us insight intoways we can guide the discussion with children. Philip asked the question,“Doyou understand?” Also, Philip started teaching about Jesus right where theEthiopian man was reading. When talking with children, start right at thequestion they ask or right at the story you just told. Keep answers simple anddirectly related to the child’s question.
