WHY TALK ABOUT ABORTION? society and our government.” On Saturday, January 22nd, we marked the 49thWhy must priests continue toanniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe vs.preach against the evils ofWade decision. This Court ruled that the Constitution abortion? First, we want toincludes a “right to privacy” that extends to aprotect the lives of innocentwoman’s right to have an abortion withoutbabies. Secondly, we want toexcessive government restriction. Since 1973 anprotect men and women fromestimated 62 million human persons have been killed the trauma that abortion inflicts. We want to protectthrough abortion. their souls from grave sin. We want Catholics to stop voting in politicians who support and even promoteThe Church’s teaching on abortion is clear: “Human life must be respected and protectedabsolutely from the moment of conception. Fromthe first moment of his existence, a human beingmust be recognized as having the rights of apersonȄamong which is the inviolable right of everyinnocent being to life” (Catechism of the CatholicChurch, 2270) “Since the first century the Church has affirmed themoral evil of every procured abortion. This teachinghas not changed and remains unchangeable. Directabortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as anend or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:‘You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shallnot cause the newborn to perish’ ” [early 2ndcentury catechetical document Didache 2, 2](Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2271) Here at St. Mary I have had a few parishionerscomplain to me that they are tired of hearing aboutabortion from the pulpit. I, too, am tired of having toaddress it. I wish that we priests never had toaddress it. Since abortion remains the greatestinjustice in our world today, however, we mustcontinue to preach the truth. One woman onceasked me: “Why don’t you priests preach againstgun violence in Chicago?” I replied: “Because, unlikeabortion, gun violence is already considered a crimeand it is neither celebrated nor promoted by ourPage two abortion. We want desperate women to know thatthey do not have to kill their child in order to havesuccess in life. We want men to take responsibilityfor the women in their lives and their unbornchildren. We want families to support a child whofinds themselves in an unplanned pregnancy. Wewant the Catholic faithful to volunteer at crisispregnancy centers and work on the front lines tosupport women in need. I want any woman who has had an abortion to knowthat she can experience forgiveness and healingthrough Jesus Christ. Men who were involved in anabortion need to know this, as well. Come to thesacrament of confession. Do not be afraid! TheChurch also offers retreats that can help bringhealing (check out “Project Rachel” atHopeAfterAbortion.org, or by phone (815) 387Ǧ3379,or email projectrachelrockford@gmail.com). We still await a decision from the U.S. SupremeCourt in the Dobbs case. Perhaps this will be the yearthat Roe vs. Wade is overturned. Even if thathappens the battle to protect human life and buildup a culture of life will continue.

BOOK OF THEMONTH GODFOREVER YOUNG SENIORCLUB RESCHEDULED DATEWednesday, February 2nd, 1:00 PM WHAT EVERYCATHOLIC SHOULDKNOWAttention all Seniors and anyone elseinterested. You are invited to join us on: By Elizabeth Klein Wednesday, February 2nd at 1:00 PM in theIf we want to love God and make him the center ofParish Hall our lives, we would do well to ponder the nature ofGod, at least in some small way. This book serves as astarting point for understanding what Christians meanFor a presentation by Lt. Kelly Gitzke of theHuntley Fire Protection District on: when they say “God.” This book addresses threemajor conceptsȄthe nature of God, the Trinity, andthe IncarnationȄso that we may strengthen our faithand our ability to communicate it to other people. Some of us might protest that we are not smartenough to do theology and that less is more when itcomes to contemplating the divine. But if God isperfect, wonderful, all goodness, love itselfȄas theBible tells us in 1 John 4:8Ȅit would be strange indeedif we did not want to give our whole selves to God,including our minds. Visit the kiosk in the narthex for this book ( 5 each). After reading please do not return book to the kiosk Ȃpass it on and share the faith.
