2Overview to the HandbookThis handbook has been developed to provide helpful information while you are a student in thePh.D. Program in Nursing at Saint Louis University. It represents the combined efforts of theprogram director, faculty, and Ph.D. students in fostering a supportive, collegial environment atSaint Louis University School of Nursing and in making transparent the practices and proceduresspecific to this program. The University does not have a Graduate School. Admission of applicants isdetermined by the School of Nursing and communicated to Graduate Admissions and the Office ofGraduate Education. Student graduation is determined by the School of Nursing and coordinatedwith the Office of Graduate Education. The School of Nursing conforms to the basic policies of theGraduate Education Catalog of the University but may have more constrained/specific standardsthan stated in the catalog. The Graduate Education Catalog leaves a number of options available toindividual schools and programs. 7SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITYSaint Louis University (SLU) is a Catholic,Jesuit University with three campuses: the Frostcampus and Medical Center campus in St. LouisMissouri, and the Madrid campus in Spain. TheUniversity was founded in 1818 and is theoldest university west of the Mississippi River.Saint Louis University began when LouisWilliam DuBourg, bishop of Louisiana, openedSt. Louis Academy in a one-story house.DuBourg offered land to the Society of Jesus fora Native American School which becamechartered as Saint Louis University in 1832.The U.S. campus moved to its present site onGrand Boulevard in 1888.The University’s mission is the pursuit of truth for the greater glory of God and for the service ofhumanity. The University is governed by a Board of Trustees and administered by a president whois the chief executive officer. About 98% of the full-time tenured and tenure track faculty at theUniversity hold the highest degree in their field.
