You voted me in as President of the UtahWatercolor Society. What were you thinking? Ha! I will domy best to carry the torch, lit in 1974 by Rose AnnPeterson; carried by many other Utah icons of watercolorincluding our most recent, the fabulous Kristi Grussendorf.Wow! What big shoes I have to fill!Colleen ReynoldsSo what can I do that these others have not already done? Should I dosomething different? Is our Society working? If so, “why fix it if it ain't broke?"(An old Navy saying). If it is not working, why not? What can we do better?I guess my own pressing question is the title of this article. Is a Societydedicated to water media on paper relevant in today's art world?I feel watercolor societies are relevant because this media and this societyhappen to be absolutely essential to my art and to me. I paint in other media, but again and again I return to watercolor. That magical interaction betweenthe water, the pigment, the paper, and the artist sings to me in a way no othercreative endeavor does. And, let's face it, watercolor is just harder than theothers, right? Or am I being arrogant? Do other media artists feel the same?Should artists organize societies around one media? Why should we "advancethe art of painting in watercolors" as we state in our bylaws? Why not just"advance art" in general?utahjewels@hotmail.comMini-WorkshopsTom HowardJuly/August 2015laura.hawley@gmail.comI really want to investigate this idea from others' perspectives. In the comingyear, I hope to delve deeper into these questions by conducting interviews withindividuals both from within and without the UWS and share with you what I willhave learned. I hope to talk with at least one of each of these Utah art world"movers and shakers:” 1) a University art professor, 2) a gallery owner, 3) aframer, 4) an art collector, and 5) a current UWS member who considersanother media his/her primary media. Stay tuned!Until then, I have decided this society "ain't broke," and I will do my best tohonor those who have been the UWS Presidents before me by carrying out ourSociety's planned agenda. This 2015 summer is packed with watercolorgoodness. The Arts and the Park: Light on the Reef event in Torrey, UT hasjust wrapped. We have the Small Works Exhibition currently showing at thenew Bountiful Davis Art Center. Our Signature and Two-Star Members willsoon exhibit at Red Butte Gardens. This Fall, we have an exciting lineup ofspeakers, paint outs, exhibitions and workshops. Stay tuned to your emailblasts and this newsletteras we roll out the specifics. Thank you ALL for yourparticipation, contributions, and smiles. And thankyou for trusting me to lead this Society through thenext twelve months. Now let's paint in watercolor!Website: www.utahwatercolor.orgEmail: info@utahwatercolor.orgFind UWS on Facebook atwww.facebook.com/UtahWatercolorSocietyHumbly Yours (for the next year),-ColleenRoad to Cherry Creek by Colleen Reynolds

There wererailroads, cement plants, warehousesand sunshine.Painting out in May is always “iffy”because of the weather. Our May 10thPaint Out was quite rainy. Three of usmet for lunch prior to 1:00p and thenheaded to Liberty Park, which wasquite wet. We did see another UWSmember driving around the circle, buteveryone else had better sense thanto come out on such a day!We of course, finished our year inCapital Reef, for our second Arts andthe Park: Light on the Reef annualevent. It's was a challenge for rain butwe loved it from under our umbrellas. Please send new Paint Out locationsuggestions to Maggie Harrison(maggie.watercolor8@gmail.com) orBlaineClayton(claytonblaine@live.com).We would love paint out together inJulyandAugust!Watchforannouncements online and via eBlast.WFWS 201641st Annual WFWSExhibition: June 9 –August 28, 2016It’s never too early to start thinkingabout the annual WFWS Exhibition. The 2016 show will be hosted by theColorado Watercolor Society and heldat the Arvada Center for the Arts andHumanities. Theywere great hosts, and I offer mypersonal thanks for their work. The delegations were treated to dinnerat the homes of some very nice folksand, even though the Buddy Hollymuseum was closed (due to flooding),Ann DeWeese got to meet and visitwith a classmate of the rock and rollstar, so her disappointment wassubdued. As we visited in our meetings, ideaswere shared and policies were votedon. One change that occurred wasthe required number of WFWSexhibitions for an artist to receiveSignature status. That number wasreduced from four to three acceptedentries to bring Western Fed more inline with other organizations aroundthe country.Joyce Baron reported to the delegatesthat the Archives Department at theUniversity of Utah will accept and keeparchives of our organizations’ showsand events. She and Maura Naughtonhave worked on archiving over thepast few years. The news was warmlyaccepted by the Western Feddelegates.- Tom Howard(Your UWS WFWS 2016 Delegate)Congratulations to all the UWSmembers who were accepted to the2015WesternFederationofWatercolor Societies exhibition inLubbock, TX:Gail Alger, Double White BirdJoyce Baron, OutcropTerrece Beesley, Freshly CutBrienne Brown, One Step AwayLynda Burruss, Seedling TransitionsCindy Kambourian, BirdhousePaige Kimball, Wise GuyCarl Purcell, HopeKathy Sutherland, The StandingStones of Couthy MeathAnd the following UWS members alsowon awards!Award of Excellence - Joyce BaronGolden Colors - Lynda BurrussAward in Memory of – Carl PurcellCharpak Inc – Kathy SutherlandClick here to see the full WFWS show!UWS Paint Spot, July/August 2015Outcrop by Joyce BaronSeedling Transitions by Lynda BurrussHope by Carl PurcellThe Standing Stones of County Meath by KathySutherlandAdditional congratulations to JoyceBaron, Lynda Burruss, and KathySutherland on achieving WFWSSignature Membership status withacceptance to this year’s show!3

That feeling that maybe Ihave bitten off more than I can chew.Laura HawleyBesides painting, summers for the Hawley household are typically spent atcross country practice. We join the 100 other high school students andparents and meet at 6:00am to work towards our summer running goals.Usually one of the students will share an inspiring quote. Last Friday, Iheard this:“Someone once told me not to bite off more than I can chew. I said 'I'drather choke on greatness than nibble on mediocrity!” –UnknownI thought about what this meant for me as a painter, and remembered how Icame to join the Watercolor Society. My good friend Kara and I had beenmeeting together weekly for some time to work on our art. I studied graphicdesign in college, and I enjoyed drawing, but I didn’t consider myself to beany kind of painter. She had heard of the society, and was eager to attend, but not alone. After much persuasion, she dragged me along. I was afraidto try something new, but I had always wanted to be a painter. Long storyshort, I got hooked. Now, after much encouragement and instruction, I'mfinally getting over my fear of ruining the paper, and I have a LARGE stackof desirable and less than desirable paintings – not to mention the treasureof awesome artist friends.I have (maybe against my better judgment) shared with all of you my thirdeffort at painting with acrylics below. Once again, no idea what I am doing!I have gained so much from taking a chance and being willing to trysomething new. I hope we all take those chances that present themselves, put aside our fears, and allow ourselves to stretch a little!-LauraHospitalityLeisa Firth deer-hollow@comcast.netBlog Spot: www.uws-cvc.blogspot.comCVC Member Meetings are held thesecond Tuesday of each month at theLogan Library.Orbital by Laura HawleyUWS Paint Spot, July/August 20157
