John hasover 30 years experience in the Utah framing business. Fulldisclosure here – He is my favorite framer because he showsmy paintings in one of his stores. I also consider him a friend. The gist of our conversation concluded that any business ororganization in today’s fast moving economy must adapt orColleen Reynoldsdie. Let me start at the end of our conversation, with John’sanalogy; attempting to change a large organization is like turning a big ship. “Itdoesn’t happen quickly and may take a lot of effort and time,” he said, “buteventually, with persistence, the boat can change course.”I loved the analogy. I happen to have some experience with big ships. I rememberreturning to port aboard a US Navy aircraft carrier, marveling at how little tugboatscould guide and tow a huge aircraft carrier home. From my perspective, up on theAdmiral’s bridge, 20 stories above the waterline, the task looked impossible. Buttug they did, with masterful efficiency, bringing us safely home.Where am I going with this, you ask?Jenny Love jenniferloveartwork@yahoo.comPublicitySherry Meidellsherry@sherrymeidell.comBookkeeperCynthia Hepworthcindyjhep@gmail.comEducation ProgramsJulie Ickesutahjewels@hotmail.comPaint-OutsMaggie Harrisonmaggie.watercolor8@gmail.comBlaine Claytonclaytonblaine@live.comWestern Federation DelegateTom HowardImagine the watercolor society structure as a mighty ship, on a steady course, steaming through calm waters – but knowing a storm is brewing in the distance. The society has two options: To stay on course and weather the storm, or altercourse and turn into uncharted territory. Please forgive all the nautical puns. I’mhaving fun.tomhoward11@hotmail.comOption 1: Society stays on course. It perseveres; riding out The Storm, doing whatexperience has taught her is The Way. After all, Good Weather will eventuallyreturn, right? Society could well make it back to Good Weather with her calmwaters, battered but not beaten, still doing it The Way. Or The Storm could defeatSociety. Tug may have to rescue the remains, towing Society to the mothball fleet,to finish out her remaining days as a tourist attraction in Florida or Texas.Past President & WFWS AlternateKristi e Pfisterroxane.pfister@usu.eduNan Graynanrgray@gmail.comKathy Sutherlandksutherlandfineart@comcast.netOption 2: Society reads the forecast and alters course into unknown waters. Itavoids The Storm – but encounters uncharted seas and lands, full of new people, technologies and products: Facebook, the Internet, online entry forms andnewsletters, PayPal, email communication, customers who prefer bright colors andabstract paintings, digital images, clay board surfaces, varnishes, watercolorpaintings without mats and glass - strange and unusual territory, indeed.Small Works Exhibition ChairGayle AllenBarbara i-WorkshopsVacant (contact Colleen Reynolds for info)UWS-CVC PresidentLaura Hawleylaura.hawley@gmail.comWebsite: www.utahwatercolor.orgEmail: info@utahwatercolor.orgFind UWS on Facebook atwww.facebook.com/UtahWatercolorSocietySociety does not quite know how to proceed. But Tug offers a tow, and thenAbstract steps up to the end of the rope. Soon mighty Society heads slightlystarboard. And Value joins and so does Design. Now Society is on a whole newcourse. “But wait! We need to go back,” Society cries, “It was safer before.”“Remember The Storm?” Asks Tug. “I’ll help you besafe here.”“And look at the colors and patterns on that distantshore!” chimes in Abstract, “We’ve never been therebefore. Isn’t it exciting?”“NO!” Society exclaims, “It scares me!”“It scares me too,” says Tug, “Let’s all go together.”Big Ship and a Little Tug by-ColleenColleen Reynolds

Here are excerptsfrom one such blog post by artmarketer Barney Davey.2ndRebecca Lewis received aPlace award at the 2015 Salt LakeCounty Fair for her painting "Barnfire" and an Honorable Mentionribbon for her watercolor painting"Douglas 1".Ten Right Ways How to Be AHappy ArtistOver the years of reading forumsand comments on sites and blogs forartists, I have noticed a trend. Thereare unhappy artists who are morethan willing to offer their opinions. Ifind most are either:1.UWS Paint Spot, September/October 2015Bitter about struggling to make ago of it selling their art.2. Confused about how the artbusiness works, or how to manage asmall business.3. Just sourpusses.Sometimes you hit a trifecta and findsomeone who fits in all threecategories. When I see that, I amsad for whatever circumstanceshave given them such a negativeoutlook. That’s because I know theyare victimized to a degree bythemselves. To be on balance, Imust say I know many more happyartists than I know unhappy ones.If you are bitter about the state ofyour career, you need to turn yournegativity around. Life is too short tobe unnecessarily unhappy aboutyour career or your life. We don’t allget the same skills and startingpoint. We do all have the sameoptions to choose to make the bestof what we have.Buying Art Is Not Out of Vogue —It Never Was.If you are struggling in your artcareer, it is under your control to fixit. You can find an unending list ofreasonswhythingssuck.Technology, geography, and apathyare biggies for many. Here’s thething. People have never stoppedbuying art. Let me repeat. Peoplehave never stopped buying art.I have known artists, art publishersand gallery owners who have stayedin business through thick and thin.Buying habits change. Some yearsare better than others. Nevertheless, art continues to sell. Always has, always will. Why Is Your Art Not Selling?Okay, maybe they aren’t buying yourart. If that is the case, you need tofigure out why. The usual reasonsare either you are making work thatis hard to sell. That is, it has limitedappeal to most buyers. Or, you havework people will buy when they seeit often enough, but you are notefficient in getting it seen by the rightprospects often enough. If your work is a problem, you cankeep making work like that, but youshould lower your expectationsabout how well it will sell. Happinessis about meeting expectations. Ifyours are out of line with the realityof what you are making, you aremaking yourself unhappy.(continued on page 6)5

Useful Art Tips(continued from page 5)You can also choose to make artwith more appeal. Even though it is acreative endeavor, it is also aproduct that needs commercialappeal if you want to build asuccessful business around sellingit. Otherwise, accept you havecreated a pleasant pastime whereyou occasionally get rewarded withsales. If It’s Not Your Artwork, Then It’sYour Other Work.If you know your art sells whenenough people see it, and you arenot moving your work, you have amarketing problem. Making art ispart of your art business. The otherpart is finding customers andprospects and selling your work tothem. That takes marketing first andselling second. Marketing and sellingyour work is your other job. One youcannot let lapse without risking yourcareer.Marketing creates interest andintrigue. It drives actions that lead tosales. You get sales with a welldesigned website, strong traffic, excellent conversions with powerfulcalls to action. You might also getsales because you drive traffic to ane-commerce site.As an alternative, you might networkonline and offline and generatedirect sales to collectors. Thisscenario, selling direct to collectors,is the best for artists and collectors. It is what I teach and preach about.Selling through galleries works. There just are too few to go around. There Is No Free Lunch. You have to make your own way. When you begin to move in the rightdirection, you will find there arethose who want to help you. Startmaking little victories. Each onemakes you a winner. We lovewinners. We want the best for them.Work for the day when it is youhelping an up and comer. Give back.Pay it forward. Shrug off yournegativity and get moving. Yourcareer is waiting. You, yes YOU,can achieve great things. Start tobelieve. Aim high. Aim higher. Berestless. Most of all, get going.Click here to read full article.6Art Classes AvailableSherry Meidel, UWS, NWS.ColleenReynolds, Watercolor ClassesBFA, MS EducationLocated in Bountiful, Sherry isavailable to teach workshopsWatercolor ClassesWatercolor classes on and private lessons in herhome.EmailWednesdays andAdvanced Watercolor on Thursdays. sherry@sherrymeidell.com orColleen teaches beginner to advanced adult visit www.sherrymeidell.comartists. 21st Studios in Sugarhouse: 974 E. for more information.2100 S. I lovethe opportunities my involvement gives me.This August, I had the great privilege of seeing Joyce Baronand Cache Valley Artist Richard Garland exhibit beautifulpaintings at the Kimball Art Festival in Park City. RichardGarland's artwork has a wonderful spontaneous, watery feelto it. I love what the paint does on his paper! I can really feelthe emotion of Joyce Baron’s dynamic work!Laura HawleyAnother one of our Cache Valley painters, Dianne Siegfried,or "Sig", has a beautiful show currently hanging in Furhiman Fine Art and Framing. On the evening of the Logan Gallery Walk, she greeted friends and new viewers ofher work from her wheel chair. Her silk paintings are so vibrant and lively, and someof her paintings made me wish for a road trip to New Mexico.Sig spoke of some of the other artists we know who have influenced her work. Ithought of my own experiences with many of you. I am so grateful to know you, andfeel your influence in my own efforts to be a better painter. We artists sometimeslike to work alone, but I really feel we benefit greatly from the support, experienceand knowledge of those other artists around us.I am a better artist because of my involvement in the Utah Watercolor Society, and Ihave heard others share the same sentiment. When we help each other build thisorganization, we all win. Thank you for the part you play! Get and stay involved!
