Welcome to EvansvilleWelcome to the 2017 Indiana Political Science Association (IPSA)Conference at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville,Indiana. We are excited about bringing faculty, graduate, andundergraduate students throughout Indiana and surroundingstates to exchange ideas and present their latest research in thediverse field of political science. Right now, this is anextraordinary time to discuss issues affecting our nation andsociety.This year, we have 60 presenters in 15 panel sessions and aroundtable session on the American presidency, along with ourkeynote speaker, Dr. Kristina Horn Sheeler from IndianaUniversity-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), an expert ingender and political communication. There are 16 universities inthree states represented at this year’s conference.I would like to extend a thank you to all the people who haveprovided generous support for this conference, including USIPresident Dr. Linda Bennett, USI Vice President for Developmentand President of the USI Foundation David Bower, and Dr.James Beeby, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, along with KatReneer with USI Special Events and Cindy Renschler with USISodexo Dining Services for their assistance in setting up theconference space and preparing the food throughout the day.Special thanks goes to the conference planning committee,including Trisha Wright, Dr. Oana Armeanu, Dr. Paul Raymond,Malcom Krepp, and Teddi Rausch, who have made thisconference possible. K RISTINA H ORN S HEELERProfessor, CommunicationStudies and Associate Deanfor Academic Programs atIndiana University School ofLiberal Arts at IUPUIKristina Sheeler is a Professor of Communication Studiesand Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the School ofLiberal Arts at Indian University-Purdue UniversityIndianapolis (IUPUI). She teaches undergraduate andgraduate courses in political rhetoric, persuasion, andgender and communication, and has taught internationallyin the Czech Republic, Poland, and Macedonia. Herresearch is in the area of gender and politicalcommunication, studying the ways that political candidateidentity is contested and constructed in popular media,political discourse, journalism, and punditry. Her mostrecent book, Woman President: Confronting PostfeministPolitical Culture (2013, Texas A&M UP) co-authored withKarrin Vasby Anderson, assesses the debilitating framesthrough which the 2008 candidacies of Hillary Clinton andSarah Palin were presented to the public. Woman Presidentwon the Organization for the Study of Communication,Language, and Gender’s outstanding book award in 2014as well as the National Communication Association’s 2014James A. Winans—Herbert A. Wichelns Memorial Award forDistinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address.She is also the co-author, with Anderson, of GoverningCodes: Gender, Metaphor, and Political Identity (LexingtonBooks, 2005) and has published essays and reviews inscholarly journals such as Women’s Studies inCommunication, Communication Quarterly, PresidentialStudies Quarterly, White House Studies, and Rhetoric andPublic Affairs.Today’s lunch has beengraciously sponsored by theUSI FOUNDATION10
